Because Messi is just objectively better than both at virtually every facet of the game.

Winning everything is huge for sure, but not the be all and end all. Sergio Ramos for example, has won the lot and played a big part in each, but no-one in their right mind would put him above Paolo Maldini, who lost finals at both the Euros and World Cup. Talent is still the biggest factor.

I like Ronaldo a lot more than Messi. I like his footwork more, his more physical play and that he can head a ball and also carry RM to victories and win trophies (don't care about either of their clubs), but in reality Messi's stats are just insane and beyond what Ronaldo or Iniesta or any other current footballer has done. He's just that good.

Obviously, he was handpicked as a kid and bred to excel at the sport. I don't care about meaningless titles like GOAT, but in the football world he is at the top, despite no WC.
