Well, no Argentina means that both the runner up and third place aren't present. Crazy.
Silly banter aside, what was Netherlands problem during this quali*?
*Didn't really follow all of qualification till today
We're bad. But if you look at the roster and today's game still easily 2nd best team in this group. Not getting in a second place is shameful.
This qualification started sour, with a coach the players and public didn't even want. After all we failed to qualify for Euro 2016 even. A guy that has no authority, and a bad rep as a coach. Danny Blind is shit, and he was shoehorned in by buddies. No one liked him.
Then you have the first game against Sweden, bad as expected, but ultimately we score the winner and the ref says no. That shouldn't be a problem, because you get Belarus, Luxembourg and Bulgaria next. But Blind kept rotating, hiding behind excuses, leading into the worst and clueless game ever played (Bulgaria away game). Dick Advocaat takes over, wins his first games, then expectedly loses in France but with perhaps too many goals difference. Wins the rest. Sweden somehow beats Lux with 8-0, a team that held France at 0-0 in Paris. We're done and we know it.
The problem is, we don't have a generation of players that can lock the opponent down on their own half like we used to. Not anymore. We're too arrogant in thinking we should stick to our philosophy of the game, despite what admirers like Guardiola say. The time that we didn't even call up Bundesliga and Premier league top scorers because of no room for them are over. Most of our players are at second rate teams today. We essentially swapped with Belgium.
As LvG showed in Brazil, you need to play to the strengths of your squad. That is, accent on defense and luring for counter attacks. If we go forward, todays physically strong midfielders murder us. Ofcourse another generation will rise, one that might be able to dominate games, still not winning silverware but everyone happy. We're a small nation with a small pool.
