Football Thread 2017/18 |OT2| Fractured but Ox

That's too bad for Chile, I was cheering for them despite being brazilian. How big is football there?

Football is the most popular sport here, but honestly we are "amateurs" in comparison to other countries like Argentina, Brasil, or Italy.

Here, people will bitch today, tomorrow and most probably during the rest of the week, but very few guys/gals will be like "this is the end of the world".

It's still sad, obviously. Russia 2018 was going to be the farewell for this generation, and we expected to have a decent performance, but a very small minority expected from this team to win the WC.

There is some strong karma in this. Trump's USA missing on qualifying for the World Cup in Russia of all places. their job being taken by the Latino teams.

So USA not even to the play-off, surprising but I didn't follow CONCACAF qualifiers so it might haven't been such a surprise.

Imagine the same match, but without messi. You think would be 3 x 1 for Argentine? I doubt.

Maybe, but maybe not. Coulda, woulda, shoulda is impossible to guess in football, when hardly there're two matches alike.

A little bit gutted NZ is facing off against Peru instead of Chile or Argentina.

We will still lose no matter what, but I'd rather we get a bit of a show with a 'name' player to draw the crowd.

Where can I find the recap on everything's happened to world cup qualifiers in the past few days? Has everything been decided?

I'm kinda busy these days and the matches being played at 2 AM over didn't help either.

As of right now:

Russia, Brazil, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Belgium, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Germany, England, Spain, Nigeria, Costa Rica, Poland, Egypt, Iceland, Serbia, Portugal, France, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia and Panama are through.

So it's mostly playoffs(UEFA and Peru v New Zealand and Australia v Houndras) and 3 African groups that's not yet finished.

Meh, at least this weekend is stacked with amazing matchups. 6 of the top 7 in Serie A (no Torino) are facing each other. Plus, Liverpool vs Man U, Atléti vs Barça, & RB vs Dortmund.

Brilliant

Thanks!

Ehhh, the Netherlands will be missed way more.

Damn, this is gonna be a rough tournament for me without them. :(

And I always cheer for them. Always. I still remember that day on the final. They were so close.
I guess it's never afterall.

Man I have such a soft spot for the 2010 World Cup. So many golazos (thanks to the Jabulanis), absurd reffing/bizarre events, and it happened at a time when I was really becoming a hardcore football fan. Good times.

Arjen Robben quiting the national side makes me sad. Best Dutch player I've actually lived to see play.

Edit: Also, as a guy who's half Dutch/Half American, who the fuck do I root for now...

Man, hearing a stadium of 60k singing the national anthem (hymn) always gives me the goosebumps :)

Congrats to Argentina though! I kinda fell asleep during the half-time, but if 2nd half was anything like the 1st it was more than deserved. Let's also see if Peru can make it! :D

And of course, congrats to Panama and Honduras!! Both newcomers to the WC if I'm not mistaken!

Honduras isn't new and they still need to beat Australia first.

Holy shit, No World Cup for America.

Man, the guy they called on Football Weekly was so sure they would go (He just wasn't happy how they were supposed to progress)

Funny stuff

Poor Chile :(

I know that some big teams will always miss out each WC, but it really doesn't seem fair that CONCACAF get 3 spaces + 1 playoff between 6 teams, and South America get 4 + 1 playoff spaces between 10 teams, especially when South America has such strong teams historically

Mental that the US couldn't qualify from that group too

The four leagues for the UEFA Nations League.

Wall of text:
League A

Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Iceland, Croatia, Netherlands

Teams will be split into four groups of three, with the group winners then contesting the UEFA Nations League Finals (semi-finals, third-place match and final) in June 2019 to become the UEFA Nations League winners. One host country will be appointed in December 2018 from among the finalist teams.
The four teams that finish bottom of their groups will be relegated to League B for the 2020 edition.
The top four-ranked teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter a play-off in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

League B

Austria, Wales, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine, Republic of Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Turkey

Teams will be split into four groups of three. The four group winners are promoted to League A, with the four sides that finish bottom relegated to League C for the next competition, to be played in 2020.
The top four-ranked teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter a play-off in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

League C

Hungary, Romania, Scotland, Slovenia, Greece, Serbia, Albania, Norway, Montenegro, Israel, Bulgaria, Finland, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania

Teams will be split into one group of three and three groups of four. The four group winners are promoted to League B, with the four sides that finish bottom relegated to League D for the 2020 edition.
The top four-ranked teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter a play-off in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

League D

Azerbaijan, FYR Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino, Gibraltar

Teams will be split into four groups of four, with the four group winners promoted to League C for the 2020 edition.
The top four-ranked teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter a play-off in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

How were the line-ups were determined

The 55 participating teams were split according to their position in the UEFA National Team Coefficient Rankings following the end of the European Qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup (as per 11 October 2017, play-off results will not be included).
League A includes the 12 top-ranked teams. The next 12 teams are in League B, the next 15 in League C and the remaining 16 in League D.

I kind of like this UEFA Nations League idea.

It's gonna be a bit messy this 1st year, since it's a brand new thing and it'll also have an effect on UEFA's regular Qualification tournaments but I think it's a good idea that allows teams to play for "reals" with other teams close to their level. Plus, assuming you're not already in Group A, once you get good enough you can play better teams and further test yourself.

A great plus (IMO) is that the actual Qualification will be held only during a single year, making it less annoying to follow.

Is real football back yet?

Only in 2018 bro.

Edit:

Also, jebus, Ronaldo vs Messi discussions are annoying. You know what's actually gonna hurt? In 2022 (or, with some luck, slightly after that) seeing these two dudes retire from the world of football :S Kinda crazy to think that they are both in their 30's now.

It's all pointless because Maradona and Pele were better. I always find it funny when people mention Ronaldinho though he was an very good player with futsal skills and Nike pimping him at every opportunity.
