Today's interview was about why he chose Zola and how they operate in player recruitment.
First and foremost the Pozzo's are here for the long haul with everything they do being geared to long term success. It is vitally important the club is stable and that takes time.
Zola fits their philosophy perfectly and they are looking for him to be around for a long time. Zola was the perfect choice to maximise the development of young talent and to deal with the foreign players coming into the club. Zola has a good knowledge of English football and knows what it is like for a foreign player coming into England.
They made their choice of manager after a lot of thought.
Gino Pozzo was keen to provide Zola with the best group of players possible and this is why so many came over in the summer. Watford are now closer to the European model in that they have a head of recruitment. When you are a smaller club it is not wise to make the manager totally responsible for player recruitment. If a manager does well he will move to a bigger club and all the knowledge goes with him. With the European system this does not happen as the infrastructure for player recruitment remains within the club. The manager of course has the final say on players and does have a large input, but the club has to be stable, have these processes in place and run by people within the organisation.
This is one of the reasons why they chose a club the size of Watford as it could run the club in a similar way as Udinese.
He touched on the new young Australian player we had signed and said that the manager has very little input because he is not going to go into the first team squad. The decisions for this type of recruitment is with the scouting team, as they have different qualities in identifying players that will develop two years down the line.
It has to be the club's commitment to grow a young player because the development might take longer than the term of the manager.
What would happen if Udinese wanted one of their loan players back? We are expecting the loan players to exceed expectations here. We really believe they can become top players for Watford. For example Forestieri is doing extremely well at Watford, so why would we send him back? It is clear he has found an environment he is happy in and is developing well. It would be wrong to take a player back to Italy if he is doing very well here.
Watford will continue to use the Udinese scouting network as they can benefit from a club operating in Serie A, but that does not mean Watford will not identify and bring in their own players such as Almunia and Hall.
Once Watford become financially stable they will be able to make more investments. The starting point has to be sound financial policy. They have a limited budget and would like to maintain a vision of not overspending. You have to make a project grow, so in two years, if all goes well, Watford will be in a position where they can go out and buy their own players and maybe even loan them to Udinese. It can work both ways.
