I missed the Barca/Madrid game. What happened? Any controversy? How did Valcunt get sent off?

Anti-football with flashes of good football.

I've been saying it all along. Tiki-taka IS a form of anti-football.

Give me Mechanical United any day of the week.

barcelona's 5-0 was the perfect execution of tiki taka. if that's anti-football, then you have just shattered my world view.

Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Agger, Carragher, Lucas, Allen, Gerrard, Downing, Coutinho, Suarez

Damn, Sturridge not fit :(

Henderson should still be starting imo

It took Allen like 2 months of poor performances before he was dropped, Henderson gets it after 2 games, one of which he was on the left wing

I assume that Allen is starting behind Suarez like where Henderson use to play before Sturridge was signed. Gerard doesn't have the legs to press in that position.

It will be obvious straight way if Allen is unable to press like Henderson.

Off the top of my head, at least five goals were defensive mistakes.

Hell, I'll give you that game. What about the other games? Playing 'keep ball' is fucking boring.

Hated the match last night, it's just impossible to play decent football against Napoli. However, I just realized that we actually gained another point on them. A victory and a draw in Serie A, so we'd have the advantage if both teams were to finish with the same amount of points. +7, fuck yeah.

Tiki-taka is not an overriding style of football without nuance

You can be boring with it, or you can be exciting with it. You can mix it up, you can persevere through the 90 minutes. Fact of the matter is that Barcelona recently have been doing it the shit way, which leads to shit results and boring matches/poor performances

The same way Spain did it up to the final last year

CHIELLINIIIIIIIIIIII IS BACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Chiellini is technically still the last remaining undefeated player right?

But I would find it hard to believe Tito isn't giving him instructions and picking the team. Plus they're a bunch of adults who are regularly lauded as the best team ever to play football. On compassionate grounds, of course Tito's absence is going to affect them. But its not really that strong an excuse for the impotency they've shown.

oh, i agree with you on that, but it definitely impacts the team when the guy who was partially responsible for their success in the past years gets replaced by someone so insignificant as roura. i haven't been impressed with them all season except for maybe that first game against madrid.

Anti-football with flashes of good football.

When teams park the bus and people complain about it all you hear is "its about the result, not entertainment" so why is it different for tiki taka. Result is all that matters and most of the time it has worked, no matter how bored you were.

That's probably one of the worst Madrid matches...I still don't know what Mou was exactly trying to pull. (well I kinda know but it was suicide).

Of course Barça can play incredible well, but more than often (basically when they're winning) they just "kill" the match by having endless passes on the mildield.

Nah, that was stunning. I don't like Barca and I don't like tiki-taka, but that 5-0 game was just an incredible incredible performance. They didn't just keep the ball for the sake of keeping the ball then though, they moved with pace and power and it was just beautiful to watch.

Recent Barca are different.

Tika-taka can be used offensively and defensively. Barca do both quite often. Those who praise their football see the offensive side, and those who lament it see the defensive side - which I agree, is soul draining to watch. But I'd rather see a team play tika taka defensively than park the team bus in front of goal

The point is that tiki taka is just a means to an end. My trolling aside, the term anti-football is a stupid stupid word that does nothing and completely disregards the fact that football is a sport that allows for many interpretations. There is no one true way to play it.

It's not even the fact that I find it boring - I do for the most part - , but the fact that yeah, it is entirely comparable to parking the bus. Yet parking the bus is treated like this fucking despicable thing to do and tiki-taka is held up as the pinnacle of football's achievements so far, you know?

I'm not trying to be confrontational or antagonistic so I hope I'm not coming off as such.

but it also depends on the opponent. if chelsea are parking the bus, it requires a different approach than when they're playing against a team that plays a high line. you'll have to have more patience in your build up when playing against a team as defensive as chelsea (just using that as an example). with the high line barcelona have been playing in these past years (with the defenders being near the half-way line), the risk of opponent striking from a counter-attack is high so you have to be more careful.

You're right, but most of the teams 'parking the bus' aren't really parking the bus. They're cornered by Barca's tiki taka.

Barca's problem is that they never have a different approach. And that's fundamentally it. They're too obsessed with their philosophy to be able to react to any plan that does focus on stopping them. They just try and count on the fact its been successful in the past + Messi to drag them through. Football's an ever changing, evolving sport and for a team which has paved the way for modern football, they're falling behind. I just don't understand how a team so tactically sound can only have one tactic.

Go watch some video of the Netherlands national team of the 70s and 80s. That was total football and they played it forward, not backwards.

Exactly. Teams don't set out to park the bus against Barcelona (minus a handful of Mourinho-Pep clashes), they just end up on the back foot the entire game because Barcelona keep the ball so well. It's just logical to line up in front of the goal line, rather than exhaust yourself chasing the ball.

but that's also because of the way madrid were playing: mourinho wanted to try a higher line and it failed which left them exposed and gave barcelona lots of space.

And they're not even really parking the bus, they're sitting inside the bus watching somebody constantly trying and failing to park their car in the space next to the bus.

You aren't and I agree. I'm just upset about Barca :( Season crumbling in a matter of weeks.

Too much possession with little output can be a detriment to the spectacle of the sport. There's a reason shot clocks were introduced in basketball.
