For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

I actually tried to make the switch to primarily gaming on a pc. I was super excited and had my pc expert buddy help me build my own computer. I was extremely disappointed by the state of the big, multiplatform games on pc compared to PS4. Especially if you want a game close to its release day, things are just much more reliable on console. the moderate visual upgrade was just not worth the crashes, drivers, the hassle, etc. Sold my computer and was back to buying all the multiplats on PS4 again within 7-8 months.
 
I barely have enough time to play all the games I want to play on PS4 so my gaming PC is basically collecting dust. However, if I'm too bored with modern game I just fire up my PC to play emulator here and there but that's pretty much it.
 
Variability of the PC. I understand that it's variability that's the best reason for people but it's like me going to a restaurant with a 20 page menu. Love the options, can't make a darn decision. I want the game to run 60 fps but let me reduce frame rate, maybe go from 4x AA to 2x AA, etc. Some love this stuff. I can tolerate it to an extent but tweaking a game shouldn't be part of the process.
 
Would have to start from scratch, have little technical knowledge on how to get reach a high standard of gaming as well as the fact there aren't really any exclusives that I want to play. The ability to play unlocalised games and mods to fix games is very appealing however.

I play primarily on PC... well.. used to anyways. I have my PC directly connected to m TV, wireless Xbox controller installed, steam big picture mode.

All of you saying it's seamless are a bunch of damn liars.

1.Turn on computer
2. Oops forgot I switched out of big picture mode last time
3. Get up, find mouse and keyboard, put steam into big picture mode
4. Sit back on couch with controller
5. Pick game, fuck it needs to be configured for a controller
6. Look for wireless keyboard and mouse because I don't wanna keep getting up, find it.
7. Mouse falls off lap table while typing with keyboard
8. Dig in couch for mouse
9. Keyboard falls off while looking for mouse
10. Find both, configure game with controller
11. Windows wants to update
12 steam overlay isn't working because windows update icon is "Infront of it"
13. Click update later.
14. Game starts
15. Configure game
16.reconfigure game because it may have low FPS.
17. RECONFIGURE AGAIN because you lowered too many things
18. You must restart game for changes to take affect.
19. Hit pause on controller
20. No quit option, find mouse and keyboard to ctrl alt del out of game
21. Restart game
22. Start playing game
23. Windows fucking restarts while playing
24. Play PlayStation while windows figures it's shit out.

There gentleman, is the truth of PC gaming on a comfy couch.

On consoles they also do. Look at Skyrim for PS3 or Driveclub at launch. People tried to find ways to make the games play better again. (Copy Skyrim saves and stuff like that)

I mean I could find out posts here on GAF where people even have problems with console hardware and say "Look. It happens on consoles too. Look at all those posts I found."
 
I don't refuse to game on PC, but I tend to only buy multiplatform games on PC for the first couple of years after I upgrade my PC.

Reason being, once my system gets to the point of not being able to play at high settings (usually the graphics card is the bottleneck) then I start to think, what's the point of buying on PC over console?

If anything, trying to increase graphics settings and being met with the realisation that I need to upgrade my PC to run the game at decent graphical settings just results in disappointment. Buying games on PC and not being able to play them at good settings disappoints me, so I just buy on console at that point, where the settings are fixed and the game will (most likely) run well enough.

I'm in this situation right now, my graphics card is old (GTX 780 6GB) and is only good enough for medium in most games now if I want 60fps (High in the majority of games if I play at 30fps). It's also rubbish for 4K, and since I have a PS4 Pro, I find myself playing any Pro-patched games on PS4 instead.
 
I wish to add that PC to me is more of a utility and educational platform rather than a gaming/entertainment one. Some of my most fondest memories on PC are playing with Bonzi Buddy, reading Encarta 97 and using art creation programs like Draw and Kid Pix. I mean I did play some games too but they were PC centric stuff like animals simulators before they were a meme and flight simulators or games like sim city. After that it was mostly online shooters and MMOs but after a while I got tired of that when Valve stopped making games and PC went full digital I kind of just left PC. I spent more time on my PC scaning my manga drawings and borwsing the web and stuff anyways

Every since I played my first console game I came to saw consoles were going to be my main gaming platform because they seem to have all the coolest games and were just simple easy to use machines with a lot of good third party support and that has stuck to this day. I just see PC differently, to me its a learning and platform with a lot of tools to make stuff, it's not a ease of use platform like consoles and lacks many of the cool games in my opinion so yeah

Did skyrim or driveclub launch for those ppl tho? Could they play at all? Yep. Trying to do extra stuff doesn't equal my game won't work at all an it's due to my settings/setup not the game itself.
Please go find links on console troubleshooting where a game simply doesn't launch.


Edit: an even if you find 100 examples you must know that it occurs at a more frequent rate on PC due to the nature of the platform correct?
 
I like gaming on consoles. It's a cheaper initial investment, I don't have to assemble or maintain it, and I can rely on it working and playing the most recent games for 5+ years to a reasonable standard. Even as PC's get easier and easier to set up and use they simply aren't as accessible as consoles. I like console exclusives too. PC has a tonne of great stuff too but the things that play best on mouse and keyboard like strategy games or MOBAs aren't the types of games that I'm that into. Most of the stuff I care about gets ported to consoles. If I had to means to have both I would do so but as it is, I'm happy playing games the way I do now.
 
My reasons for not playing on PC:

1. lots of effort required to get it working
2. MS pushing out updates that kill your system every now and then
3. Anti-Virus with its false positives stopping games from running
4. Shoddy ports of console games (Dark Souls and Batman as good examples)
5. controller support can be anything from, "oh that was easy" to "Fuck this im going to the pub"
6. None of my friends play on pc
7. Everyone always asks me to fix thier PC.
8. Shit rarely works like it should
9. Upgrades never that simple. "Ive a new awesome graphics card....WTF I need a new PSU now?????"
10. Updates. Turn the thing on and BAM windows needs to reboot.
11. I sold my desk
12. I dont have an HTC Vive
13. I value my time
14. When shit fucks up, it fucks up big time.
15. Addiction to installing mods into games, that then fucks everything up.
16. Doesnt matter how great your graphics card is, there is always a better one coming out next month.

This list makes it sound like I hate PC gaming, I dont. I love it, but regardless of what you think it is a massive pain the ass at times. Saying that at least we are out of the era of DOS.
 
Ease of use and friends.

I knoe PC is cheaper on the long run, but none of my friend would shell out 800-900 up front.

Honestly since now we get free games on XBL and PSN it doesnt feel rip off at all. So I dont feel strongly about switching to PC full time.

This crap gets old. Having to fiddle around with various drivers all the time and sometimes nothing fixes the problems.
At least on a console it ain't my end 100% and don't need new hardware to combat problems
 
I don't have the time, knowledge and patience to research on how to build a proper modern gaming PC, purchase all the parts 'n pieces I need and to assemble them together. I don't know anybody or place who'd do it all for me either. It's way easier to purchase a dedicated gaming device from wherever, get it out of the box, plug it in and play.
 
Windows (especially 10) keeps me away, it's a vomit OS. Reading through the performance issue threads of games like Horizon 3 & Gears pretty much keep me from returning. & I can play the best pc exclusive game on my old mac laptop - CSGO

1. Because I want my Nintendo fix day 1
2. Not every game I pick up for my PS4 finds its way to a PC release (though that has been slowly changing over the past year)
 
I do game on PC, but usually if I don't get a PC version of multiplat, it's because the community on ps4 is gonna be a ton better.

Or if it's a series i'm used to playing on console and the port is good.
 
Oh, guess one more point to add to ps4. I love the console exclusives. I currently have gow, horizon, nier, Zelda, Mario, days gone and South park preordered. Only South park will be on PC. Maybe nier. Exclusives sell me.
 
I'm guilty of being the worst PC gamer.

The past month, it's been me on my couch, Macbook on my lap streaming Steam, playing with a 360 controller, Netflix on my TV via PS4 and occasionally soft resetting for a shiny starter in Pokemon Sun.

Equal opportunity gamer.

The worst thing is I've upgraded my PC. Titan X and 165 hz G-Sync monitor and I have an obsession with mechanical keyboards. My setup also has a pretty decent audio system. I get into nice office chairs as well. Really have created an ideal playing environment. But man, I love my couch.

The only real time I'm on my actual PC to play is when I'm playing WoW or use the Vive.
 
I don't really have a problem with PC gaming, it's more of I don't enjoy playing games on PC. I'll see it for a good price , get excited and buy it then start it up and play it for 20 mins- an hour turn it off and never touch it again.

Then some time down the road I'll buy it on console and play the shit out of it until I beat it.

Ok see we can be friends then!! I know lots of pc gamers an have a best friend who is an IT guy who enjoys helping ppl online troubleshooting their stuff. So I KNOW it happens a lot an that's the reality. I just can't stand when ppl on forums talk as if it's the same as consoles or that it happens as frequently. It's just not true an comes across as downplaying the issues.

This kinda threads are always funny for me.
This is the first generation I dont see a reason ( ok there's only one and its called Civilization ) to spend money on PC Gaming meanwhile on forums and boards there is a lot of people trying to show how you should go to PC Gamings.
There was a time when having both a console and a PC was the real deal : on one side I got amazing titles like FF, Xenos, MGS, on another side I got Elder Scrools, Fallout, Torment. On one side I had couch coop, on other the beginning of online gaming. Each one had the best of their own world.
Then 360 came and with it just brought with it almost every game, and some features, that made me one day invest on PC Gaming.
So answering your question OP I dont refuse game on a PC, I just dont think its worth anymore : exclusives dont appeal me anymore the ones that once did are all multiplats now ( Civilization is an exception ), cheaters on online bothers me, I love R*, I like japanese games ( PC is getting better support on this but still not even close to Playstation), I like Sony's first party/partnerships output and I dont think its worth to invest in a new plataform to play the same games I can play in one that I already have.
But yeah I cant deny I miss Civilization, but not that much at the point of investing on a PC.

ps. I "quit" PC Gaming on 2012 after having it as my secondary plataform since the day started playing.

Yeah. I never said that. I just try to correct misconceptions, because apparently a lot of people here think that such problems are still as common as in the 90s and (imo) they really arent.
 
i built a PC, have an x1 and ps4.

I prefer the x1 and ps4. PC is getting close, but right now, its just not at intuitive on the couch as it is with a KBM.

Steam big picture mode is okay, but it can only control steam. I need more than that.

And yes, i know it can double as a mouse pointer. idc. its not easy to use. its not as easy as an app designed for a TV screen

I stopped reading here.

You can start big picturode by holding down the Xbox button on the controller. Of course you can also set it to whatever you want in the settings.

If the post is that misinformed from the start, I doubt it's worth reading the rest 😂😂😂😂

Yes while true but lesson learned
 
* i like being able to press that one button on my wireless controller and have my console boot up, turn on my TV and be ready to play in 15 seconds (less if i wake it from suspend)

* i don't care as much about image quality than i do about a coherent software and hardware ecosystem

* I don't think i could build a PC in as small of a form factor as my PS4 and not have either thermal or noise issues

The reason is people like you. Leave people who don't want to try PC alone. It's not some great freaking thing they'll miss out on if they don't.

I don't understand the bolded at all. Why can't they join the fun on a PC? Online and local multiplayer is as much if not even more of a thing on a PC than Xbox and PS4. And personally I use Steam and Battle.net for socializing too. Chatting with your friends is much better on a keyboard than a controller. And yeah, while setting up and playing on a PC isn't really that cumbersome nowadays, it takes bit more than consoles.

For Nintendo, I think you are absolutely correct. Wii, 3DS, Wii U and especially Switch offer something more than basically a weak PC, which PS4 and Xbox pretty much are. That's why as mainly a PC gamer, I'm going to get Switch on the side. Microsoft is already releasing their games on PC, I wish Sony would go 3rd party too. Or atleast release their games on a PC. Nintendo could stay making hardware, since it's usually something quite different.

Too expensive and difficult.

I love Nintendo games. They come first. I love playstation games and exclusives. They come second. Adding the price of a PC to that would be more than I could justify for my hobby.

Secondly, I have nowhere where I live to set up a PC. There's nowhere appropriate other than the TV area, and that would make it useless for other tasks.

Thirdly, I've used a laptop for the last 17 years. That's not changing, whether I buy a PC or not, so the use of it as a computer would be limited.

Fourthly, I move all the time. Typically between Europe and the Caribbean. With the Wii U or 3ds etc I can just throw them in a carry on bag. Once I've built a PC? Is that possible? Doubt it. I'd be worried it'd break if it even fits in the first place.

Lastly, I get my consoles into the Caribbean where I live in my carry on, avoiding customs - that is if it's over the $400 allowance you get, which a console usually isn't but a PC would be. If I can't do that with PC, it would add 33% to any cost of the machine, taking it way out of my comfort zone for paying.

To be fair, I've wanted to buy a new TV for five years and many of the same reasons above have kept me from doing so. So it's not just a PC issue. But for me, it doesn't make sense.

Nah they aren't. That's very true. Some ppl ITT were saying it doesn't happen at all tho. Thinking that if they never experienced it firsthand it doesn't exist. I hate that mentality. It's one thing to highlight the pros of your platform of choice, outright lying or burying your head in the sand is not cool tho. The same mentality ppl having with paying for online gaming on consoles. It's bullshit even if u don't mind it it's a clear CON when being compared with PC gaming.
