For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

I want to play some videogames.

As soon as i press the power button on my 4000$ gaming rig, bought saving several tax returns, the light in my apartment flickers, as the power supply draws every drop of electricity available from the wall, but i was prepared, to ensure the light wouldn't go out, i turned off every appliance in the house, every light and standby LED was off, just a dark room lit by the powerful rainbow colored lights of my PC components, shining through the transparent, nvidia-logo-shaped, side of my 4'2" tower monster rig (itself shapeed like a Michael Bay Transformers Monster Truck).
Beeps and error codes on my 20" 600hz monitor warn me there are multiple problems: No biggie, i do the usual trouble shooting, phone my tech-y friends, do the expected tinkering and rewiring, re-route the power from the Mobo to the SGN-45 ports, and the computer boots up again fine, in safe mode, glorious 4 bit color mode.

Now the computer finished booting up, i know because i hear the signal: a beep due to missing drivers; i'm in the other room cooking dinner in the dark, and i run to the PC before it turns off again, i'm ready to rock, baby!
I sit on my perfectly fine pyramid-shaped gaming chair, and boot up steam from my CMD prompt, 40 simple lines of code later, i'm in Steam, i right click on the icon of my Road Block Sim (gotta start in Admin mode, or everything crashes), and here we go!
40 minutes of mods sorting and .txt tinkering later, i'm in the game's menu.
I close and ignore all the warnings i get, "missing drivers", "missing patches", i leap into the settings, i'm ready for some good calibration time.
I whip out my big ol' game configuration manual, and start testing and benchmarking.
Time flies when you're having fun, and 4 hours later the game is set, i start up new game, and even manage to grab some cool concrete screenshots downsampled from 8K, before everything crashes and my PC starts to do the usual buzzing sound.
I smell burnt plastic so i pull the cord.
I wanted to cheat and hack my way through some MOBA leaderboards, but maybe next time.

Another well spent gaming eveing is in, i'm ready to boot everything back up and go post that wonderful screenshot on r/PC_MasterRace, albeit using an image host that doesn't compress, as IQ is the only reason i took it in the first place.

After that i have to go, Nvidia just released their weekly 400$ hardware upgrade, wouldn't want to be left behind.

But yeah, PC gaming is TOTALLY fine. :\

Not an outright refusal but 9 times out of a 10, I have no idea what I'm even missing out anymore by not following PC gaming extensively. Any game I want to play exists on console now and even when I look/compare it to the PC version, the differences just feel so marginal.

I was an extensive PC gamer in the 2000s and I remember comparing one version of a game on say PS1 to the one on PC and they would look like two different games. In 2017, that difference is gone for me.

I have both a gaming PC and a PS4 Pro... I find myself playing on console far more due to ease of use. With a newborn baby the ability to put the PS4 on standby is a massive plus.

Comfy couch is still an issue with PC as well, as someone outlined above. It's not near as seamless as some make it out to be, not even mentioning some games are no-goes with a controller on PC anyway (Overwatch being a big one for me).

Consoles already cover my needs, and I'm already years deep in the ecosystem so I have a vast number of reasons not to start over.

Also, the technological/performance advantages of PC frankly don't mean much to me as an older person. Everything that was once state-of-the-art and amazeballs eventually looks ordinary then dated, so the whole "keeping-up-with-the-arms race" mentality strikes me as being utterly pointless and futile.

I don't refuse to, but I often don't.

Main reason: I have grown sick of troubleshooting games.

Second reason: PlayStation's exclusives are absolutely killing it right now. Won't go into list-wars, but I have no time for multiplatform games at the minute, as I'm still catching up on three PS exclusives from last quarter, and four PS exclusives releasing in the current three week period. I want to play Yakuza 0 so much right now.

Exclusives, which is also the reason I will eventually buy a Nintendo system but have no interest for the PC exclusives.

Of all the top PC exclusive games on Steam, I would never bother with them as they're in a genre that bores me like Dota/League, fast paced shooters or those games that are on early access for 20 years and play like garbage.

The only genre I miss out on are point and click adventure games, but I only play 1 or 2 a year on my crappy PC and I'm good.
The Book of Unwritten Tales 1+2 are great.

The time I had to download an update to play recent games but the signature for my GPU wasn't supported and required a BIOS update to the GPU alone.......
Years went by with me confused why whenever I updated the driver my PC crashed and bootlooped
Probably my breaking point

My internal need that if I buy a gaming PC I want it to be a high end one (gtx1080 and such). And that doesn't come cheap.
So I'm saving up.

Also, I'll wait for this wave of cool Ps4 games to pass. Right now you could gift me a beast of a PC and I wouldn't even touch it as I would still spend the next months playing NiOH, Gravity Rush 2, Horizon, Yakuza 0 and Persona 5

Also the games. I'm not saying there aren't any good PC exclusives. But to me the exclusives on consoles are way more appealing than the ones on PC. And then some of the best ones (like Owlboy) don't really need a very strong PC so I can play them on what I own now.
So a PC would mostly be a multiplatform device for me. It will give me the best version of those games....But I can wait.

Sony actually make me want to own a PS4 through marketing+exclusives. I see a PS4 game advert daily on the TV

Threads on Neogaf do a better job of making me want to game on pc than Nvidia/Steam.

I actually own a gaming pc. I just don't really use it much because outside of actually playing the games, owning a gaming pc is another hobby that I'm not interested in.

And finally exclusives on pc have a higher chance of coming to Sony consoles than the vice versa. I only have a certain amount of time for gaming and I can live without pc games but I can't live without my Sony exclusives

My answer is simple.

I don't want to.

I have a high end gaming PC that I literally never turn on. I prefer physical media for games so that alone is a major reason. Also as a controller user I would get destroyed by KB/M users. Nah I'm good.

I know a lot of the general arguments in the past was that people would say they wanted to just load a game and go, or that they wanted to sit comfy on their couch... And it's now hopefully known that all those things are and have always been easily achievable via Pc gaming, but even more so now a days.
As someone that was foolish enough to listen to the PC gamers preaching this on the internet I tried to make the switch of replacing my consoles with a PC with these in mind. Have never been more wrong in my life, playing and using games with Steam on a Tv with a controller, let alone without steam is an absolute chore and sometimes just down right impossible. Was driven insane, not to mention the ridiculous amount of problems brought on by PC being divided up into an infinite number of standards and solutions to everything. The only people that can enjoy a Pc in this way are either extremely lucky or have way more time than the majority of people can afford to spend tinkering with things to play games in a similar way to a console.

Sorry for the rant but I'm just sick of seeing this, it's not even remotely the same. Contrary to most PC gamers I also welcome UWP and Microsofts initiative to standardise systems and make games more friendly on PC. Especially as someone with an Xbox One and a desktop.

That I can agree with. I have purchased about 60 games this year on my PC. I paid about 100 bucks on them. Problem is I paid about 200 on ps4 for about 30 games, but the games quality is stronger with my ps4. And as a counter to paid online. I have plus. It's 40 to 50 a year. They give me plenty of games to play as I don't play online. I'm a couch co-op gamer to the core. And with plus discounts and flash sales I've gotten to purchase more AAA games for same price or slightly above the cheap steam games/ humble what have you. I don't think the games are cheaper works as well on PC anymore. Plenty of times this year I bought a game ps4 because it was cheaper than steam.

We had to resubscribe to Plus for Titanfall 2 (my daughter prefers consoles). So I can see where in some cases the pricing is very close and in some cases better then I've seen on Steam.

But those Humble Bundles man...it's insane sometimes what you can walk away with for $1-$5.

i play games on pc and console...Both has the same comfort for me

But PC is definitely beating consoles (i have 970)..

I am happy with PC gaming..

1- turn on pc (faster booting than consoles, thanks to ssd)
2- turn on tv
3- start game
4- play with xbox controller...(with better graphics, fps and resolution, loading times)

ps: i love all..my ps4, xbox, pc....

I'll take an objective view as a mainly PC gamer.

I can understand exclusives, even though PC has more. But consoles do have some unique or big budget exclusives you can't get anywhere else...Eg Nintendos first party,Sony's own exclusives....I'll rule out Xbox as they all appear on PC now.

That's the only genuine reason I still game on Console, along with mainly PC

I swear, every month, without fail, some PC GAMER is going to gaze at his lovely, massive 1000 dollar graphics card sitting in his PC (coz there's no game to play while waiting for console ports that always release late), asks himself the question - why don't more people play on PC? And proceeds to post that very question on gaf.

I used to game on my Laptop but I stopped simply because;

-I was tethered to the table as I couldn't just sit on a couch and game on the TV and I didn't want waste time in plugging and unplugging my laptop to the TV.

-I primarily use my laptop for work, so the last thing I want to do is spend more time on it.

-Some games won't run on my laptop which means I would have to get a new top of the range model or build a gaming PC and I don't have the time nor the money to deal with that.

-PC doesn't have exclusive Nintendo games.

-As of late I have been shifting more and more towards to handheld gaming, PC gaming just doesn't offer that.

-I don't like having to deal with steam as I have to boot my computer up then launch steam and then launch the game.

-Space, my house is pretty small so I just don't have room to plug a gaming PC to the TV.

Bunch of liars in here man.

I play primarily on PC... well.. used to anyways. I have my PC directly connected to m TV, wireless Xbox controller installed, steam big picture mode.

All of you saying it's seamless are a bunch of damn liars.

1.Turn on computer
2. Oops forgot I switched out of big picture mode last time
3. Get up, find mouse and keyboard, put steam into big picture mode
4. Sit back on couch with controller
5. Pick game, fuck it needs to be configured for a controller
6. Look for wireless keyboard and mouse because I don't wanna keep getting up, find it.
7. Mouse falls off lap table while typing with keyboard
8. Dig in couch for mouse
9. Keyboard falls off while looking for mouse
10. Find both, configure game with controller
11. Windows wants to update
12 steam overlay isn't working because windows update icon is "Infront of it"
13. Click update later.
14. Game starts
15. Configure game
16.reconfigure game because it may have low FPS.
17. RECONFIGURE AGAIN because you lowered too many things
18. You must restart game for changes to take affect.
19. Hit pause on controller
20. No quit option, find mouse and keyboard to ctrl alt del out of game
21. Restart game
22. Start playing game
23. Windows fucking restarts while playing
24. Play PlayStation while windows figures it's shit out.

There gentleman, is the truth of PC gaming on a comfy couch.

Ha ha, so true.

I play games on PC, Sony, Xbox and Nintendo platforms.

This generation I've noticed graphics/performance/resolution only seem to matter when we are talking about Sony vs. Xbox. Says quite a bit about fanboys.

I don't have $1500 in disposable income for startup being the bread winner in a single income household.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1332569

I guess you need a couple PC's then?

Also want to point out that I've spent a total of about $500 on PC parts over the past 5 years. I upgrade frequently.

Went from a 3570k, to 4670k, to 5800k and that cost me ~$250 all the upgrades there.

Then from 660ti, to 770 to 970 to 1070 was around another $250 in total.

That's less money than I spent on my PS4 Pro and PS+ subs and I've got to stay on the cutting edge for those 5 years.

Goes both ways in this situation, it makes absolutely no sense how someone can say it was impossible to play steam games with a controller on their main display, that makes no sense to me. It's borderline ludicrous to me to hear that it was "impossible".

Maybe if someone buys a total piece of garbage Pc from staples or Walmart, but any decent machine will do this with ease

Can't afford a new PC right now and I enjoy PS4 / Console exclusive games, so when I had to pick between the two a few years ago I picked a PS4.

All I play on PC is LoL anyway.

All I want is to sit down and play my games, without worries.

I do care about graphics and performance, but pc gaming is not worth the time to set things up.

To be honest, Nintendo is the reason.

I love Nintendo games more than any other, from long ago. So the equation goes like this:

1. Top of the line gaming PC + Nintendo console = $2000

2. "Hardcore console" (in my case PS4 Pro) + Nintendo console = $700

...and that's about it.

I don't want to deal with Windows, drivers, tinkering with games to make them work or any of that crap. Also just don't have the inclination or energy to get over that hump of buying (or building?) the thing and getting it set up on my TV. It's all just not worth the hassle when I can just fire up a console. Maybe some day though.

All those pictures I see everyday about 30 FPS LOL CONSOLES in every single gaming community that's not NeoGAF say otherwise.

Thankfully they're forbidden in here so we can have actual discussion, but looking down on consoles/PCMR non-ironic attitude is freaking everywhere.

Man these are the replies I can't even...

Are you going to counter any posts at some point or did you just open this thread to laugh at other people?

There are more exclusives on PC than the entire library of ps1,2 and 3 combined. There are entire genres that arent on consoles, with entire histories, hyped games, surprise releases and big dissapointments.

I can assure you there are heaps of games that could interest you, but since you dont game on PC, how would you know ?

I keep seeing the exclusives argument as favoring the PC, and I just don't see it at all, for the games I want to play, and I've been gaming on PC since '98. Aside from MMORPGs (which I no longer play), and PC specific RPGs, there's literally nothing exclusive that I care about. I'll always favor gaming on a PC over a console with the same titles, but that's about the extent of it.

Is the PC going to get Nioh? Eventually.
Is the PC going to get Horizon? No.
Is the PC going to get Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey? Outside of future emulation, no.
Is the PC going to get God of War? No.
Is the PC going to get the upcoming Spider-Man (which may or may not be Amazing)? No.
Is the PC going to get Days Gone? No.

There's room for both though. I don't know why there needs to be a choice, aside from another $400 initially.

I don't know why 'you can't even' as you are being disingenuous if you don't think PC in front of a couch needs far more maintenance than firing up a PS4 and Xbox and playing.

I don't think anyone is saying it's impossible to game on a TV with a PC but it's more unstable and potentially time consuming than simply firing up a console.

It really doesn't though. Especially if you know what you're doing. For a novice, who's never bothered before? Probably. There are just as many console updates anymore as there are Windows updates. If your system is dedicated to gaming too, once everything it setup, it really is pretty much low, to no maintenance. Plus, think about all of the hours you spend waiting for loading time that could be spent learning how to properly setup a gaming PC. :p

QFT

Some PC gamers are really a bunch of liars. Completely out of touch with what people want.

- expensive
- prefer controllers
- ive been on xbox live since day one so thats my primary service
- Halo
- i have a 4k TV with my pro and xbox connected
- ease of use on consoles
- achievements
- unified friends list, i dont have to go on 3 different services to play my games and invite friends

Simplicity and entry price is a big part for me. Also, not having to worry with upgrades.

Ive gone back and forth on the idea of buying a PC but my laptop for indie games and a PS4 for everything else works for me. I don't care about graphics or messing with mods.

there are certainly things like free multiplayer that are a plus but the big multiplayer titles on PC can be run on laptops fairly well anyway.

I do intend my next laptop to be an expensive one but not for gaming purposes so exclusives indie games and stuff like Mobas should run fine and my current laptop plays LOL and simple stuff well enough anyway.

Edit: I currently have my PS4 in my room so no comfy couch for me but that will be a big plus on consoles when I move on my own. Hell, part of the reason I pay a premium for laptops is working on my couch.

Hey, I know this is off topic, but reading this thread, and knowing I used to be a lurker before a member of this group, but any chances of ever having like buttons of some sort on our posts? My thoughts on PC vs Console gaming in a nutshell. PC games you are always striving to improve performance, even if it runs better than a console version immediately, you're changing settings/downloading driver updates etc - none of it is hard, it's just something you do to make it look better.

On console people just accept that how games look for them is how they look for everyone else on their platform.

The 900p vs 1080p debates and digital foundry comparison threads are always good for a bit of a laugh.

In these threads PC gamers say there are never any problems and
any decent rig could do that" and then every single time a big game comes out there are thousands of complaints about how it doesn't work.

Battlefield 1 had a slew of issues once they patched it after the pro released, it went a month with even worse frame rates and lower textures. It needed a patch to be fixed, and this was all on consoles.

So that is with the games themselves , it happens on all platforms

The

response is tried and true.

Be interested to know how many of those that "dont care about graphics" have ps4 pro's.

What kills me is the people who got pro's and even still have their original PS4 and maybe even bought an expensive SSD for their consoles.

I don't understand the bolded at all. Why can't they join the fun on a PC? Online and local multiplayer is as much if not even more of a thing on a PC than Xbox and PS4. And personally I use Steam and Battle.net for socializing too. Chatting with your friends is much better on a keyboard than a controller. And yeah, while setting up and playing on a PC isn't really that cumbersome nowadays, it takes bit more than consoles.

For Nintendo, I think you are absolutely correct. Wii, 3DS, Wii U and especially Switch offer something more than basically a weak PC, which PS4 and Xbox pretty much are. That's why as mainly a PC gamer, I'm going to get Switch on the side. Microsoft is already releasing their games on PC, I wish Sony would go 3rd party too. Or atleast release their games on a PC. Nintendo could stay making hardware, since it's usually something quite different.

Wanna play Rocket League with your friends? - add em on Steam
Wanna play Battlefield? - add em on Origin.
Wanna play Diablo 3? - add em on Battle.net.
With Windows Store exclusives joining the fold, that's 4 'friends lists' you need to maintain.

Social features on PS4 are - while somewhat semi-cumbersome (text entry ...) - integrated into the console.
That also means you have a consolidated friends list. There's no "friend who plays WoW is never online on Steam" situation where you'd have to start battle.net to see if they're online (an app that is not gamepad optimized, btw)

So while it's perfectly servicable, social features are definitely sub-par on PC, for the fragmentation alone, imho.

I'm a technological idiot and I don't understand anything about computer specs. It's really intimidating, so I just stick with my consoles where I know what I'll be able to play.

It's baffling because your entire thought process is "I've drank the koolaid, why hasn't everyone else?"

My thought process is that simply that there's a ton of misconceptions that obviously still exist today about Pc gaming, and I think it's a shame that some don't realize how wrong they are with these misconceptions.

And I don't drink kool-aid, white russians only
