For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

1) Portability: I carry my consoles around with me a lot to friends houses and venues for things like fighting games. I enjoy playing my Vita laying down or wherever it's convenient.
About this, my Alienware Alpha is smaller than a PS4, which makes it more portable than any modern console :P And speaking of fighting games, it's the only platform with both SFV and KI.

First of all, the
exclusive
games. Uncharted, Bloodborne, Persona, Final Fantasy, all of the RPGs and japanese games. You can discuss ps4 vs pc, or Wii U vs pc... but Consoles vs PC? no chance in hell, the consoles are where the games are at.

Some games like MGS4, Red Dead Redemption, and the Yakuza series are available only on one console. You can argue "well, RDR is exclusive on consoles only because the code is a mess, otherwise it'd be on PC", well, guess what, it's not there. It's on consoles, like those bayonetta games.

There are a lot of games that you can play ONLY on consoles, but everything on PC is available somewhere else. It's funny because everybody says the Vita is dead because it has no exclusive games, but it's just like the PC.

--

Other than that... ease of use, physical copies, i love handheld consoles with actual buttons, problems when hooking up two or more controllers are non-existant.

And... a bad console port is bearable, a bad pc port is unplayable.

I'm intimidated by everything. Don't know what parts to buy, don't know how to put everything together, don't know how to keep up-to-date on drivers, don't know how to ensure hardware stays cool and healthy, don't want to deal with bugs that are unique to my own specific setup. I just don't want to deal with all the crap.

Why are you lying man? Everything on PC isn't available on somewhere else. Why are you even trying to argue something like that when you have no idea what you are talking about? Are you short on excuses that you need to make stuff up?

And why would bad console port be bearable and PC port unplayable? Only the PC version gives me options to tinker the settings myself to make it playable. For example Mafia 3, didn't really run well on 60 fps. Lock it to 30 and it worked fine, no distracting drops anymore.

The PC actually has far more exclusives than console, but it comes down to whether you are following the scene or not.

The problem isn't whether the games are compelling or not, it's the lack of marketing budget which is why this narrative continues to be prevalent despite not reflecting the reality.

Every year there are two or three exclusives that sneak up on me on PC that suck 100 hours out of my life from compelling gameplay alone.

I use a MacBook Pro, and I have no desire to maintain a separate desktop PC that’s powerful enough to play games. Plus, more than half of the games that I play are console exclusives. I just don’t think that getting a slightly better performance out of games that I can much more conveniently play on my PS4 is worth the cost and effort.

1) I used to spend hours optimizing and customizing my PC. Stripped the OS down to it's bare minimum, flipped out protected boot screens, etc. Now? I just want to turn on a machine and game. I don't want to have to even think about resolution or framerate, I'll take what I get. Closed box systems like my PS4 are exactly what I want.

2) I hated that need I always felt to upgrade my PC. I like that I only need to upgrade my PS4 when a PS5 comes out. For the record, I really dislike the iterative cycle with the PS4 Pro and if this continues [or gets worse] I'd more likely drop out of gaming altogether. I want to drop $400ish and just 'be good' for 8 years, give or take ($50ish per year for hardware)

3) I used to play PC games... strategy, RTS, etc. Think Ultima, Homeworld, Bard's Tale, Civ, 4x games, etc. The kind with lots of keys to remember and tons of text all over the screen. These don't transfer well to the TV in my opinion [text too far away] and so now I play games geared for the TV. I don't like sitting at a computer.

4) I like the idea that everyone playing the multiplayer games I play has exactly the same hardware. Sure, it's not perfectly equal and there is variation in networks and controllers, but it's still cleaner than all the variation PC allows.

5) I like the idea that devs can do their best to optimize to my exact system, and that I don't have a million settings to consider. I set brightness, sometimes, and then I'm off. I have a powerful laptop and every time I go to play a game on Steam it takes me 20-30 minutes to get it up and running properly [the most glaring issue is always getting it to run in full window mode, allowing alt-tab, at a proper resolution]. The answer I hear when I complain about this is 'don't game on laptop', which ignores the issue that I need a laptop, and the last thing I'm going to do is buy yet another device [desktop]. If a modern, high powered laptop still can't easily play games [and I'm not talking graphical showcases] due to simple resolution issues, it does not instill confidence in me. That should have been resolved a decade ago.

6) i like separating my work and play device. That is, if i'm currently addicted to game X, it sucks having that easily available if I just minimize my current window and click on an icon. I prefer having to switch devices, because that helps me focus on my work vs. play.

7) I like Sony exclusives. This means I'm going to want a PS4 regardless, which cuts down my budget for other platforms.

I miss some genres of games. 4x especially. DRPG to some extent, but I generally get my fix of that on Vita. RTS. Various strategy based games. But I adapt, because I prefer the environment I have now. I play some games on PC [roguelikes like Nethack, Stone Soup, dungeon crawlers like Legend of Grimrock, hybrids like Endless Dungeon] when i realllllly want to play them, and while I enjoy the games I don't exactly love the experience. I've also learned that while I still buy games during Steam sales, if an indie every comes out on, say, Vita, I greatly prefer playing it there and happily rebuy [risk of rain, hotline miami, binding of isaac, etc]. So often, it's a choice between buying to 'have' but never play, vs. buying to play.

My android tablet also softens the blow somewhat, since I get to play PCish games like Desktop Dungeons, Door Kickers, some strat games, roguelikes, etc. I know I still miss out on some things I want to play... but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

20 years ago, I was a PC player through and through. I looked at most console games and didn't understand why people wanted to play them, because they were so... simplified, for lack of a better word. So few inputs allowed for much less options... entire genres barely represented, and I greatly prefer wrpg to jrpg. Jump ahead to having a family? And I just don't have the time or inclination. If i have an hour to game, I just want to turn it on and tune out. So be it.

Of note, I'm currently playing a very PC like game on my PS4, Dungeons II. And the text is too small, and it's far better suited to a mouse and PC. This doesn't make me want to go get a desktop to play it, but rather, just change games. I wish it wasn't so, but it is.

What? It's been pointed out already, but no system has more exclusives than the PC.

Personally, I refuse to restrict myself and game on consoles and PC. I have no issues with people who do so. But at least use a real reason.

Yeah. I do enough research and optimizing for so many other aspects of my life. Have no desire to do it when putting together a system for gaming, figuring out the best way to run it on my TV (since I only want to play in the living room), and then buying consoles anyway when I realize most of the games I want to play are exclusives.

That is simply not true. The PS4 isn't becoming outdated at all. Like I said, Horizon is coming out next month and will look gorgeous on the PS4. In what world does that in any way equate to somehow becoming outdated. All you are saying is that at some point in the future, the PS4 will be old tech which is a pointless statement to make since the same can be said about all tech. Get back to me when the PS4 actually is outdated and we can talk but that doesn't look to be happening any time soon.

I truly hope my sarcasm detector is broken, because if you are being serious...Oh boy. I've got some bad news for you.

The PS4 is a great machine for the money, but it does struggle to hit 30fps/1080p in a lot of games. The tech inside is outdated compared to what is available these days. Its not archaic by any means, but if it was still a powerhouse, there wouldn't have been any reason for Sony to press on with the PS4 Pro.

You can't really beat it in terms of value for money, but its certainly not cutting edge hardware.

This is so unbelievably wrong, I have to think it's a joke post.

Holy fuck, this is a post from an alternate reality where this isnt complete and uther false bullshit and the complete opposite of reality

The truth is that a bad console port is "bearable" because you have no option but to bear it.

Well, better than having a game that was unplayable from the start like Arkham Knight, or one that has DRM, which reduces the performance.

if it's broken, or you pc can't take it, then tough luck. it happened to me once with a naruto fighting game, I just couldn't make it run properly. And all the time, while i was looking for a patch or an update, I was thinking (man, no ps4 user has to do this shit)

that's not true at all. It all falls down on tastes, and if you prefer what the consoles offer in that regards then that's completely understandable.

However, in sheer numbers PC has much more exclusives. I would argue that in quality, too, but that falls down to tastes.

PC is where a lot of new devs begin and grow, too. Stardew Valley began on PC and now is exploding on consoles too. CDProjekt RED. etc.

The PC actually has far more exclusives than console, but it comes down to whether you are following the scene or not.

I can see his point, though. Higher budget games tend to be exclusive to consoles, not PC.

Yet, to this day, Just Cause 3 is still practically unplayable on consoles.

DRM (Denuvo) does not reduces performance. That is a fallacy.

Well, better than having a game that was unplayable from the start like Arkham Knight, or one that has DRM, which reduces the performance.

I know the Arkham Knight bogeyman loves to appear in these threads, but it was in fact playable, as in it was possible to play the game from start to finish.
It was hugely unoptimised, and ran worse than should reasonably have been expected.

It wasn't actually broken. Like a PS3 Bethesda game after a fixed time period of play.

if it's broken, or you pc can't take it, then tough luck.

Or "get a refund".

This would hold more water if popular titles like Call Of Duty, Battlefield, GTA, and The Elder Scrolls did not originate as PC exclusives, or if these series weren't clear iterations from the original titles.
Actually it fits with my overall point. Any PC game that I want to play on a console, will make its way to a consoles. Btw the topic was about exclusives which totally invalidates your point. I was responding to a comment that said this...
"Because it's far too often seen that people ignore the existence of PC exclusives because they aren't your typical console AAA shooter or AAA game in general therefore they don't count."
If you want to argue with that PC advocate, go right ahead.

Yeah I would have guessed you will get the one with worse films. But that's okay, if your taste is more casual. Then go for the blockbusters and PS4. Your personal taste is only thing that should matter when spending your money. You get the subscription or gaming platform for yourself after all.
Outside of your elitist attitude, it's nice for you to acknowledge the obvious. People spend their money on what they like. Since mass market movies and games represent the largest audience, that's where the money goes. It's hard to even come up with a coherent argument against that.

What is really going on here is that some people are upset because other people don't share their tastes. They then try to back into an argument as to why those people really should be doing what they do. Since those arguments are at odds with basic logic and disconnected with reality, they come across a silly. You end up with stupid exchanges like:
Person A: I don't like to play games like X
Person B: Some other people like games like X so you should too

Reality: Person A doesn't like to play games like X

DRM doesn't reduce perfomance and you can refund games on Steam. If you buy something that is broken or your PC can't run it, then refund it hassle free. Unlike people trying to get refunds from PS and when they finally get it, they are told it's just a one time deal.

Time. With the few hours of game time per week, buying a 1000€ rig is a bad investment. Maybe after the kids are older. For now, consoles are enough. Wii U for the kids, PS4 for me.

Yep. For those not aware, Steam refunds are no questions asked if within 14 days of purchase and less than 2 hours of play.

If you wait too long to try out a game, or play for more than 2 hours before hitting an issue, then yeah you're at the mercy of CS making an exception. But it's always an exception with PS support if you buy digitally, and physically lots of stores will only offer exchanges for same item for opened games.

Actually it fits with my overall point. Any PC game that I want to play on a console, will make its way to a consoles.

A curiously self-reinforcing and convenient point; if it's on my platform of choice then I want to play it and it is worth playing, and if it's not its because those grapes are sour as fuck.

The reason those titles that migrated to PC are now seen as less appealing on PC now is because Pc gamers are 4-5 years ahead of the curve on iterations of those titles.
How a console only owner will feel about CoD in 5 years time, is how a Pc gamer feels about it today.

e:
And let's be honest, console only players are already feeling like CoD is getting a little stagnant.

Honestly I'd rather deal with 10 Arkham Knight releases than a single Lichdom Battlemage on consoles. With the former it was possible that my setup wouldn't get much problems, and if it did I could always make the experience more bearable for me. Something you can't do with a borked console release.

I don't think casual is a dirty word but I do think that blockbusters are mostly just loud noices and flashing lights to distract the viewer. And it makes me sad that in Gaf the loud noices get so much discussion, when better films get mostly ignored. Personally I watch both, but PC exclusives seem to get same kind of dismissive attitude that drama or foreign (not Hollywood production) films get. I also think there's room for all kind of games and I'm eager to tip my toes in every genre. For that purpose, PC has most to offer. Even when it doesn't get PS and Nintendo exclusives. Nintendo-like catalogue is missing more on PC than PS4. And that's why I'm indeed going to get Switch too, also for the portability ofcourse. And the different ways of playing comparing to a desktop PC or other consoles also interest me.

Have no desire to do it when putting together a system for gaming, figuring out the best way to run it on my TV (since I only want to play in the living room), and then buying consoles anyway when I realize most of the games I want to play are exclusives.

But not as many big budget exclusives.

Too expensive to justify.

I don't think I've ever spent more than £200 for any system. And I expect a good 5 years use from it at least. I don't buy enough games to make software prices balance out the initial outlay.

I do play old PC games and emulate though.

Do want to say, as someone who console gamed exclusively until last year, learning the parts and what's what with PC specs is addictive. I love watching new videos about cards that both push the high end and those that apply the best bang for the buck, because it's an annual process that, one day, can affect me whenever I decide to upgrade.

If anything, GPUs are worth understanding by everyone. They're some of the coolest things about this medium in general.

- exclusives

- i'm not going to be hunched at my desk over a keyboard - i do that all day for work

- i'd rather be laying on the couch playing on my big 4K screen with surround

- the price, and almost yearly need to "upgrade" to the next graphics card that costs as much or more than a PS4 Pro

Just wanted to throw a neat tidbit about Steam out there, rather than repeatedly yell about how simple it must be for anyone and everyone to plug an HDMI cable from their computer to their TV:

You can configure Steam to launch into Big Picture mode right from the home button of your controller, and you can also change your primary Big Picture monitor. So when I want to game on PC, all I do (assuming my TV is on to the right input and my computer is on) is pick up a controller and hit the home button a couple times.

Unfortunately it does not have something for switching audio sources automatically yet :\

EDIT: but someone wrote a program to do it woot! Thanks PC:

Oh and, get a solid state drive. Windows 10 + solid state drive is booted up to the login screen in seconds. And logs in and runs full speed within seconds. And almost no load times in any games.

basing on what i have to deal with on every boot up with my current pc, id rather not deal with that when i want to play a game in a whim. (i boot up my pc about every 3-5 days)

Hey i have some time to play a couple games, let me boot the tv/game/surround up real quick.(since i have instant on, updates occur overnight) Okay now i can play. = convenience for me

Hey i have some time to play, let me boot up my pc real quick. Oh, i need a driver update. Okay, i need a virus update and quick scan? Okay, windows also needs to update too. Okay, i need to plug in my controller in order to use it (elite). Okay, since im in here... are my graphical settings set to my liking? should i mess around to ensure i have it set to something i'd get more frames with? i don't want screen tearing and what did this new driver do for my game? Okay now i can play.

Not for me. Thought about it once, but then when i put more thought into it, the appeal wore off quickly.

Plus i don't have room next to my entertainment center for a standing tower.
To add, when i boot up the PC, i'd still have to navigate with a keyboard and mouse. there is exta shit i dont need to do just to play a game in my living room.

I want to play with a controller and I'm not stupid enough to play with a controller against players using a mouse and keyboard.

This is a big one for me. I don't find having a keyboard on my lap and a mouse on a mouse mat on the sofa next to me comfortable at all. This means that many of the games I would play on a PC - Total War etc, aren't going to be comfortable on a sofa. Unless I got some sort of weird tray arrangement or one of those keyboards with a mousemat which makes it look / feel like you've got a piano on your lap.

I would rather play games while sprawled on my sofa and so for MP games that's abit of an issue - NO WAY am I going to have fun playing Battlefield against people using KB&M if I'm on a controller. At least on a console it's a level playing field.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm.

First off, no one is telling you to give up your console. PC has plenty of exclusives, just without the marketing budget. You shouldn't be hunched over any desk, gaming or otherwise. PC Gaming on your TV is as easy as connecting an HDMI cable or using a Steam Link. I do all my single player gaming on my TV using a DS4 or Steam Controller. I upgrade my GFX cards less than people upgrade their PS4s.

I don't wanna sound like a fanboy but I keep seeing the same weird excuses being posted over and over again that are just wrong.
I don't wanna deal with drivers
You don't have to. At all. Steam does literally everything besides graphics drivers for you. Install Steam and Geforce/Radeon and your good to go. Auto updates and all.
I don't like playing with a keyboard
Then don't. You can use almost any controller you want. Steam has native support for practically everything but PS3 controllers.
I want to play on a couch on a 4K TV
Then do that. Long HDMI cables are super cheap if you aren't shopping at BestBuy. Also the Steam Link works incredibly well, even over WiFi
I hate Windows 10
Use Windows 7/8.1
I don't want to buy a $700 GPU every year
A $250 GPU will last you a solid 5+ years these days, only crazy people who want 4K 60fps max settings on all the latest games upgrade that often.

No offense meant, if you like consoles then go for it, but a lot of complaints I'm seeing are complete non-issues.

I'm not sure if you're aware but PCs can easily be connected to TVs. There's no need to be hunched over at a desk if that's not something you want.

Yearly upgrades aren't needed either unless you want to play every newest game at the max settings, and even then yearly upgrades aren't always needed.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm.

No surround sound on PC. How would it work?. Only a few monitors have speakers on the side let alone behind you haha. I suppose you could stick the base behind you and try and sync bios beeps to the front audio lol

In my experience, console gamers usually don't care or think about PC players at all.

But some PC gamers are always trying to get our attention and trying to convince us to come to their side, it's like being vegetarian or something, you just can't shut up about it

Hz8I9Um.gif

welp, i can see the usual pc myths being spouted by the uneducated is going strong. par for the course in threads like these. some genuine reasons, no doubt. others, not so much.

A $250 GPU will last you a solid 5+ years these days, only crazy people who want 4K 60fps max settings on all the latest games upgrade that often.

Yep. This was part of me taking the plunge last year as well. I don't plan to go 4K until my TV breaks as I'm just not a videophile. Thus I don't need top of the line graphics cards, nor to have to upgrade very often in coming years probably as devs seem to be prioritizing 4K over upping graphics, IQ etc.

My rig just has a GTX970 and it's been great for me so far. Ultra, or at least high, on everything so far in 1080p and 60FPS.

Nothing exclusive to the PC is worth it.

Is this trolling? Am I swallowing bait?

I guess Civ isn't worth it. Nor is Arma. Or Company of Heroes. Or The Stanley Parable. Or Legend of Grimrock. Or Crusader Kings. Or Cities Skylines. Or Star Citizen. Or Pillars of Eternity. Or Counter-Strike. Or any of the dozens of thousands of games, with better graphics, audio, mods and controls, with backwards-compatibility with pretty much anything that's come out since the beginning of contemporary gaming.

PC gaming has no exclusive games worth it. You've heard it here, folks. Someone should tell Paradox, Firaxis and Valve and let them know so that they stop wasting their time.

Non-intuitive, disadvantageous, and illogical

Then don't. You can use almost any controller you want. Steam has native support for practically everything but PS3 controllers.

Yup, and if you hate Windows that much have Steam run on start up with BPM set as default. Dashboardy

A $250 GPU will last you a solid 5+ years these days, only crazy people who want 4K 60fps max settings on all the latest games upgrade that often.

And your old games don't perform worse just because there's a new GPU available!
2016 Nvidia nonsense notwithstanding

Horses for courses at the end of the day.

The only two reasons in this thread I can agree on are:
Distractions. Bang on. I'm 'watching' Glitch on the right half of my TV as I type.
Exclusives. Not that the PC doesn't have any. It has way way more. It's not quality. Consoles and PC have their share of Gold and turd. It's hard to descibe as anything other than the Naughty Dog effect. Let me explain. Everything Ninty release aside. The only console I have ever owned is the PS3. I went from Aquarius to Amstrad to Amiga to PC. 80286 and it's been PC ever since. I bought a PS3 as a GTA fan not wanting V to be spoiled before my PC play through and I got the GTA TLOU bundle, and TLOU blew my socks off. I'd never had that gaming experience before and it was sublime. I bought Uncharted 1,2 and 3 and loved them all. That is missing from PC, for me.
