For those who refuse to game on a PC, what holds you back?

No, but the fact that he's putting on the same level a game that has a Metacritic average of 93 after 113 reviews and 3 other games that nobody has ever heard of and only has 8 reviews from some niche publications is almost offensive

Offensive? Really? Metacritic is a shit barometer anyways, imo. There are a TON of well received PC exclusives, Civilization VI for one, World of Warcraft, Total War games, etc etc

Both platforms have their exclusives

Bunch of liars in here man.

I play primarily on PC... well.. used to anyways. I have my PC directly connected to m TV, wireless Xbox controller installed, steam big picture mode.

All of you saying it's seamless are a bunch of damn liars.

1.Turn on computer
2. Oops forgot I switched out of big picture mode last time
3. Get up, find mouse and keyboard, put steam into big picture mode
4. Sit back on couch with controller
5. Pick game, fuck it needs to be configured for a controller
6. Look for wireless keyboard and mouse because I don't wanna keep getting up, find it.
7. Mouse falls off lap table while typing with keyboard
8. Dig in couch for mouse
9. Keyboard falls off while looking for mouse
10. Find both, configure game with controller
11. Windows wants to update
12 steam overlay isn't working because windows update icon is "Infront of it"
13. Click update later.
14. Game starts
15. Configure game
16.reconfigure game because it may have low FPS.
17. RECONFIGURE AGAIN because you lowered too many things
18. You must restart game for changes to take affect.
19. Hit pause on controller
20. No quit option, find mouse and keyboard to ctrl alt del out of game
21. Restart game
22. Start playing game
23. Windows fucking restarts while playing
24. Play PlayStation while windows figures it's shit out.

There gentleman, is the truth of PC gaming on a comfy couch.

Maybe other people aren't quite as lazy as you or don't consider most of those steps a big deal?

edit: Dang, did I fall for a joke post?

And such great games, games like Out of the Park Baseball 17 or Stephen's Sausage Roll,
games people will be talking for years to come and will inspire other games for decades, unlike that crappy indie title that is Uncharted 4

Uncharted what, amirite?

I mean, I know you're being shitty, buy you're not completely wrong.

Stephen's Sausage Roll is Green Room to Uncharted 4's Captain America: Civil War. Not every text is a " safely please as much people as possible" product. Hell it's not like any of those were even obscure games.

- I use a PC at work for 8-9 hours a day. The last thing I want to do when I'm at home is interact with a PC platform, unless it's for something like writing which is much easier on a keyboard and in a desktop word processor or browser.

- I don't like the kinds of maintenance and upkeep required with a PC. I don't want to have to think about drivers or client environments. I don't want to have to think about system requirements and settings. I want my games to just work.

- There are a few games that I play or that I'm interested in that are only on PC (StarCraft, Stephen's Sausage Roll). But I don't play these games nearly as much as I play the games available on consoles, and they aren't worth investing even a fraction of the cost of a capable gaming PC. I need a computer that will let me browse the web, write stuff, and maybe edit sound/video every once in awhile. I don't need something more expensive or more complicated than that.

I see price cropping up a lot in here, and I'm really not understanding how people are pulling out the 800$/£ numbers for a decent PC.

You don't need all the top of the line PC parts to play games at max settings/1080p.

I've had my PC since 09, upgraded the motherboard/CPU/RAM/GPU in 2012 and then upgraded the GPU again this year.

I'm not gonna say it was cheap, because it wasn't. It cost me about £500 in 2009, a further £400 in 2012 and £140 this year for a GTX1050Ti.
That being said, my PS3 cost £425 in 2007, I had to replace it in 2010 which cost me £200ish, then I bought a PS4 in 2013 for £350. Throw in the cost of PS+ for online play over the last 3 years, £120.
The cost for both has been roughly the same.

That's a pretty good run down of the trifles in PC gaming today. Individually they aren't a big deal but these are annoyances that don't go away and make PC gaming an experience you have to tolerate until everything is set up properly.

Still prefer to game on the PC but I understand the discomfort barrier.

I know it's kind of the reverse of the whole purpose of this thread, but I have to say that the main reason I've switched over to PC as my primary platform is because for some reason I feel I have more freedom with the games I buy.

Even though it's implied in your long post I feel it's important to emphasize the mod community. One of the best things about PC gaming.

What is this, 2010? PCs can be controlled in a variety of ways, including using controllers. If you have an Xbox 360 / One controller, a Dualshock 4 controller, or a Steam controller (as well as a plethora of generics), hitting the "guide" button while Steam is loaded will bring up the big picture mode that can be controlled 100% using said controller.

As for your TV being in another room, they now have the Steam Link that can stream the game to your television, even wirelessly. There are even some TVs that have this capability built in, Nvidia has a big push for this with their cards, and the "Steam Link functionality" is coming soon to Android TV devices as well such as the Nvidia Shield (which can also already stream games from your PC wirelessly if you have an Nvidia card).

You really don't want to be pushing Steam Link over wireless as an option, but even moreso than that don't push Miracast or similar based TV's as an alternative option, even with the latest models the latency / input lag on these over wireless is so atrocious you can measure it in seconds, not milliseconds. :P

I have the latest model of Samsung Smart TV (bought just before Christmas), the lag is so bad over wireless display that you can bearly use the Windows Desktop, let alone game with it. :P

Fine to stream things to, once you have got over that lag and compensate enough to launch your content, but for interactive use? - Forget it.

I own a pc that can play a lot of stuff pretty well. Really the biggest hurdle was controls and knowing that a game you buy could just not run. Luckily I got use to mouse and keyboard. When stuff just doesn't want to work it's a real pain. I guess my copy of Witcher 1 will just black screen my computer after I quit from the main menu. Luckily if you put the time in you can find weird work arounds.

Jade Empire ran a shit frame rate then if I turn some 1 to a 0 and the frame rate improves.

And such great games, games like Out of the Park Baseball 17 or Stephen's Sausage Roll,
games people will be talking for years to come and will inspire other games for decades, unlike that crappy indie title that is Uncharted 4

Uncharted what, amirite?

I primarily game on consoles, but console warriors should not try and demonstrate their point by bashing Out of the Park Baseball. You look foolish doing that. That game is an absolute gem in the sport sim dept.

For me, it's a simple matter of social desirability. When you look at PC gaming, you see a platform whose entire identity is rooted in the failed practices of the past; when you look at PC gamers, you see disillusioned, tired old men, dead-enders left behind by the inexorable march of progress.

To better illustrate this point, would it surprise you to know that the average PC gamer is more likely to have fought in the actual Normandy campaign than played the latest Call of Duty; he is more likely to reside in an assisted-living facility than own a television capable of interfacing with a modern console; and he is more likely to identify Sony as an offshoot of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Wartime Research Committee than as the world's leading entertainment console manufacturer?

In short, there's no future in PC gaming and with the glory days of PC gaming rapidly receding over the horizon, I did what any sensible, socially-conscious and upwardly-mobile young person would do: I embraced the future and never looked back.

I can't be bothered with installation problems, drivers etc. I just insert the disc in my console and play

There was this PS4 exclusive that came out recently that I had to have. In order to buy it, I had to use a third-party website that I hate to buy a PSN card so I could get cash for my out-of-region account to buy the game. And in order to be able to do any of this in the first place, I had to make said out-of-region account.

On the other hand, on Steam I just click a two buttons and then click "Play" after waiting for a little bit.

it's almost like standard use cases are easy and extraordinary ones aren't.

No, but the fact that he's putting on the same level a game that has a Metacritic average of 93 after 113 reviews and 3 other games that nobody has ever heard of and only has 8 reviews from some niche publications is almost offensive

Come on man. If you haven't heard of them how do you know how good they are? That's a ridiculous post.

I have a tough time getting the comy couch excuse. Steam BPM is in a great place now, and with things like the steam link going on sale on a regular basis for $20, it's never been easier to have a controller and just play PC games on a couch. If that's the only thing holding you back, consider trying it out, you can even use your xbox one and ps4 controllers on it.

The only reason I see that excuse still flying is if a person's house/aparment set up just doesn't allow them to keep their desk (assuming they need to work at home on the PC) and TV close together.

Then it can be a hassle to run a long hdmi cable or an ethernet cable to a Steam Link. If they're lucky and don't have a bunch of interference from tons of nearby wifi networks and what not, they may be able to use the Steam Link over wifi. But that's a rare situation if you're in a remotely dense area and/or apartment/condo and still depends on how close the desk/pc and tv are in terms of how strong the wifi signal will be in the needed rooms.

Keyboard and Mouse, controller companion got you covered. As for computer in another room, what prevents someone to have a build dedicated for the living room ?

If they work at home a lot and need a pc/desk in their home office it's kind of hard sell to build another PC just for gaming in the living room/media room. That was a big barrier for me until we moved to a bigger place and I could have a room to myself for my desk, gaming TV and recliner.

Yeah I also remember having to configure my games EVERYTIME I boot them, Windows restarting EVERYTIME.
There gentlemen, is a post full of crap.
Half of the kb issues you mention are gone with controller companion btw.

Once again PC enthusiasts can't resist telling other people what they should like. This is simple. People buy and play/watch the games/movies they like. If one type is bought more than others, it's because that is what people want. Your tastes aren't any better than anybody else's.

Have you seen the vitriol towards Switch here, how "shitty hardware" it is. How the games look bad, how Nintendo should go third party so people could play the games without buying "shitty hardware". Do you really think that's mainly the PC crowd saying it?

And no I wasn't telling you should like Moonlight over Suicide Squad, or Elle over Bye, Bye, Man. But Moonlight and Elle are the better films of those. And it saddens me that people don't give them a chance. I dislike musicals, but I watched La La Land it was a great film. I've been also trying to get more back into japanese games since I've pretty much dropped those along the way. I bought Danganronpa, which I didn't end up liking atleast yet. And now I'm looking forward to trying Nier Automata. I wish people were more open minded regarding movies and games. I don't dismiss consoles even though I prefer a PC. I've had both and hopefully continue doing so.

I know it's kind of the reverse of the whole purpose of this thread, but I have to say that the main reason I've switched over to PC as my primary platform is because for some reason I feel I have more freedom with the games I buy.

It really depends on how you look at that "freedom" and "ownership" though. Almost all my PC games these days are digital and probably tied to Steam, whereas most people buy console games on discs they can trade and whatnot, but I think what gives PC the edge for me is the freedom in what you can play them on. I can install REmake on my main gaming computer to play it on my 46" TV, or I can install it on my laptop to give it some level of portability. I know that if I upgrade to a new computer a few years down the line my library comes with me -- that Windows has been probably the most reliable platform for backwards compatibility is probably one of PC gaming's greatest strengths. If I buy a console game though, It's stuck on a platform that's only going to be relevant for a few years. I know other people might see it differently, but that has started to feel really limiting for me. I don't like that I have to have eight consoles in my house to maintain access to all my favorite console games I bought over the years, but on the flipside I've got like 500 great games from a span of 20 years on either one of my PCs or my Steam account. That so many people turn to emulation as the most effective way to preserve classic console games is proof of the advantages of this.

Maybe I'd feel different if consoles were a lot more consistent with BC, or came in more various form factors that shared software libraries like iOS devices. That's why I'm all for iterative consoles with various form factors down the line. "PlayStation" shouldn't be a series of isolated consoles, but rather a cohesive platform where PlayStation games play on PlayStation systems, period.

Maybe what it is, is that the content distributors on PC seem to actually give a shit about legacy content. Console manufacturers are trying to promote legacy games but in the case of Sony and Nintendo it's just come off as another strategy to get people to pay for games again and again. How many times have you had to pay for Virtual Console games on Wii, Wii, U, and 3DS? Sony sold PS2 games on PS3 then sold them again on PS4 with trophies when we were all waiting for the PS1 and PS2 classics we bought to just become playable on PS4. When you buy an old-ass game on Steam or especially GOG though, there's a sort of expectation that this is supposed to be the last version of this game you'll need to buy for a long time. It's preserved. In multiple cases remasters on consoles have been given away for free on PC to people who bought the original game. This is honestly the main reason I can't bring myself to buy Rez Infinite after having bought Rez on PS2 and Xbox 360. On the console front Microsoft seems to be pushing the most for legacy content with how far it's brought Xbox One BC and its intention to keep those games playable on Scorpio and beyond.

Yeah, I ended up writing kind of an anti-console rant, but the way exclusivity to closed platforms has made so many console games feel like disposable products has irked me for a while. I probably care about that more than playing PC games at the highest graphics settings.
This post is goddamn right. All of it.

If you press the Xbox button on an Xbox controller it opens up big picture mode straight away, same with steam controller.

I switched from consoles to PC and now have gone back to consoles.

PC is a hassle to keep up with mods/patches, hardware updates, drivers, etc.

I found myself Googling and trying to optimize my games or downloading some cool patch that didn't EXACTLY work from Mediafire or something a lot more than i was playing.

And it became more of a hassle than anything.

I see price cropping up a lot in here, and I'm really not understanding how people are pulling out the 800$/£ numbers for a decent PC.

The cost for both has been roughly the same.
I never understood the fact that people bring up ps+ or gold. It cost basically 5 dollars a month and you get multiple games each month. I've got games I have played more than ones I've bought full price.

My reasons for not playing on PC:

1. lots of effort required to get it working
2. MS pushing out updates that kill your system every now and then
3. Anti-Virus with its false positives stopping games from running
4. Shoddy ports of console games (Dark Souls and Batman as good examples)
5. controller support can be anything from, "oh that was easy" to "Fuck this im going to the pub"
6. None of my friends play on pc
7. Everyone always asks me to fix thier PC.
8. Shit rarely works like it should
9. Upgrades never that simple. "Ive a new awesome graphics card....WTF I need a new PSU now?????"
10. Updates. Turn the thing on and BAM windows needs to reboot.
11. I sold my desk
12. I dont have an HTC Vive
13. I value my time
14. When shit fucks up, it fucks up big time.
15. Addiction to installing mods into games, that then fucks everything up.
16. Doesnt matter how great your graphics card is, there is always a better one coming out next month.

This list makes it sound like I hate PC gaming, I dont. I love it, but regardless of what you think it is a massive pain the ass at times. Saying that at least we are out of the era of DOS.

1. Usually not.
2. Turn off updates and dont worry about any of that.
3. Dont buy/install useless antivirus program?
etc.
8. Stuff rarely doesnt work if you have some special needs.
9. Upgrades could not be simpler, buy new gpu, maybe install new drivers and go play
10. Again, turn off windows updates and manually update once per 1-3 months if you feel like it.
etc.
14. When shit fuck up, google it and fix it in few min, not like on console when shit fucks up you have to wait devs to fix it in 1day - never.
15. At least you can install mods if you want, unlike on consoles.
16.What does that matter? You dont have to always have the newest thing to get extra 20% power? Again you can do it if you want but dont have to, unlike on consoles where you cant even if you want to.

Sounds like you are still on windows xp time if you have this much problems.

Maybe other people aren't quite as lazy as you?

that swine, he must put effort for comfortable entertaiment, like a non-lazy person!

Dude... I don't get the attitude here. Nobody is disputing UC4 is decent, but to disparage games you've not even heard of makes you seem really petty and completely torpedos any point you think you are making.

- Exclusives
- Price
- No fiddling with the settings to get the optimal picture.
- No fiddling with the controller settings, "Can I play that game with a controller?" questions etc. Console is limited, but it's more conveniant.
- Feels more like a dedicated hobby machine to me, I use my ultrabook all day for everything else.

You could find arguments against every one of these ("BUT PC GAMES ARE CHEAPER SO IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE!!1!"), but I prefer it that way. Was a huge pc gamer in my teens and still play a few older games on PC from time to time. But for the last 8 years or so it has been console, don't see that changing in the near future.

No, but the fact that he's putting on the same level a game that has a Metacritic average of 93 after 113 reviews and 3 other games that nobody has ever heard of and only has 8 reviews from some niche publications is almost offensive

Yeah dude. I own a ps4. I never even bothered to finish UC4 because it was boring as hell. I'll tale Civ VI over Naught Dogs output any day. Tastes, how do they work?

I don't care about graphics, and I want to play on my couch. Yes I know I can hook up my PC to my TV, but then that would be no different than getting a console. Also I like console exclusives. However there are certain games that I feel more comfortable playing on a desk compared to a couch, like league of legends, and hearthstone. So I guess I mainly only use PC for exclusives.

1 Windows.
2 No standardized control scheme across all games.
3 Lack of unified walled garden. Why are there so many different places to buy games on one platform? Steam/GOG/Battlenet/uplay/WMP/GMG/Origin/humble etc. I want all my games to come from one place per platform. Not joking.
4. Games on PC are devalued.

Yet you called it shit?

I don't know if you are an adult, but if you are I'm sorry nobody ever told you that you can actually judge a book by its cover

The old saying is one those lies they tell you when you're a kid, in the same vein they tell kids that money doesn't bring you happiness and other foolishnesses

1. Even though the PC and consoles are converging, e.g. Steam and big picture mode on the PC side, installing games and patches on the console side, I still think consoles are way more convenient.

And I am saying that even though I was a PC gamer for the longest time and know my way around it, tweaking inis and doing hardware mods for overclocking.

2. The consoles offer exclusives I won't see on PC and often the PC version is gimped, which is especially true for sports games.

3. My friends also own the same console I do. It's hassle free for them to bring over their controllers or games.

With a video game you definitely can't. You're coming across as a petty sony fanboy tbh.

I just finished UC4 the other day and thought it was fantastic, imagine if I attempted to judge it from it's cover though?

Oh, and you can fuck off with the condescending attitude too.

I'm legitimately curious about all the people talking about price:

Do you have an older PC already? If so, do you have any interest in like a 30-year backlog of games to check out?

I get that not everyone is into trying out old classics, but there's a lot to see there and I would think that for many posters here it wouldn't require buying new hardware (as almost any old PC would do). If you're the type to check out old consoles games on VC or whatever, it seems weird to have a MacBook or old PC or budget laptop or whatever and ignore GOG.
