Perez qualified 11th.

Takes 5 place grid penalty.

Starts 10th.

YOU CAN'T EXPLAIN THIS.

Yeah you can, if you do QualifyingPosition + GridPenalty for each driver, then sort the drivers in ascending order by the result you have the grid order. The drivers behind him, the Saubers, qualified more than 5 positions behind him, so he doesn't drop below them.

Edit: I don't know if that's how they actually do it, but it's a simple and logical way to do it.

How do they order who takes what penalty when? Surely depending on when the epenalties are applied, a driver could end up in various positions on the grid?

Isn't it based on reverse order to the order in which they come out for free practice 1?

Which is why Ricciardo was out front waiting nice and early.

Glad Brawn is looking into this, it's getting crazy.

Well, if many teams are forced to do that then they should increase the max amount of engines and gearboxes again. It obviously doesn't work out and saves any money effectively.

Ericsson and Wehrlein up to 10th and 11th. Amazing.

That was my first thought too :)

I was having a quick thought as to how to avoid this - is just applying grid penalties for new components used, rather than replacement of components from the current allocation something that is practical?

What a farce

Everyone agrees the hardware penalty system as-is is extreme, but any change would have to be unanimous, too. Add the actual merits behind trying to stop larger teams from burning through components and this is soooooooooooo complicated.

What does a compromise on this even look like? You can't scrap them entirely or you'd have the works teams throwing entirely new spec engines in the cars every single weekend. Some system where they have to offer their previous specs to the customer teams immediately upon any and all replacements?

Holy fuck. That grid is fucking crazy from all the penalties. Also, I can't watch the race today, so I'm relying on GAF and Sky Sports' Live blog to keep me up to date.

BTW, Glad to head about McLaren leaving Honda, because that Partnership was a match made in hell that only a complete and utter Gobshite would believe it'd pay dividends after three years of bullshit.
