Forza Motorsport 4 - The Floodgates Have Opened...

Xanadu said:
i preferred the plain background before, i find the new layout slightly disorientating but whatever

hey badned can we race on that road :)

If not I will be pissed.

Its like a huge tease, "look at this amazing road.....to bad you cant drive on it."

The home spaces should have been limited to tracks, or indoor environments.

The grandstands got more polygons. Look at the guard rails in the first set of pictures (top and around the yellow/blue doors), they used to be just a shitty 2d texture before; now they're 3d. The road texture looks a lot higher res than in F3. Grass on the side of the roads is 3d/has better texture as well.

The road texture resolution def got a bump, I just wish they didn't make it so glossy or gave it some kind of a bump map, just feels really flat and shiny real road surfaces don't really look like that.

I think I prefer the FM3 version in these particular comparison shots, especially the sky. Not too concerned about higher-poly grandstands, 3D grass and whatnot. I'm not going there for a holiday, just to race around the track. I can't appreciate details like that at any kind of speed. Photographers will probably prefer the increased LOD though.

The 2nd sky is more "realistic" as a picture but if you're going to be racing I think the first sky is more natural to what your eyes would see in real life since your eyes have higher dynamic range than a camera sensor. I guess it just depends what look you're trying to achieve.

Yep exactly the reason why I prefer the more natural look of the first shot. It just has a better overall contrast and even exposure imho...

Am I missing something? The trackside detail looks copy+pasted. The road looks like they've brightened the paint and that's all they've done.

Not that I expected radical changes, but the actual changes are really, really miniscule. Skybox and background environment look better, that's about it.

that track didn't really need any major improvement to begin with, but you're missing...

trees !
especially the hill in the distance in this picture

twinmo4.png

or the trees behind the stands.

not only their shape is a lot better and there's a lot more of them, but they finally catch light the way the environment does; not the dark stains on the screen they were in fm3. Notice the use of 'Leonardo da Vinci's aerial perspective' (stuff in the distance lose saturation and contrast because of the blue haze).

It may look like small details, but they make a huge difference and, when not present, immediately give away the CG nature of the environment. They're crucial, actually.

Most important; the camera is a lot less prone to overexposure. Contrary to those fm3 shots, where every white or even just bright element immediately became overexposed (and gave a rather horrendous looking bloom) you can still make out the details in those white billboards.
I think that was fm3 worst offender, where every bright thing looked like it was actually luminous and gave this nuclear explosion-like bloom like everything was captured through the cheapest ccd ever. Seems like they've fixed this for fm4

There's one thing i like better in fm3 motegi though; the blue-ish tint on surfaces not lit by direct sunlight.

Edit: really, after looking at this pic for a while i scrolled up and saw fm3 pic and saw everything i never found convincing in fm3 look. The colors, camera dynamic range, overall lighting (and trees !) is all that needed to be fixed and it appears they have.

Don't assume there is a demo. Don't assume ANYTHING about Forza based on previous experiences, trailers, screenshots, leaked videos, statements by community managers, gaming site previews, interviews with developers...

I'm going to assume that their marketing team still doesn't have a clue.

For all the flack we gave Che, at least dude posted bullshots all the time! The lack of media for a basically complete game is sickening!

Tell me about it. This whole daily "copy & paste three car names from a spreadsheet list" thing has to be the most half-assed promotional event since... Ever.

Fuck, Che's random tweeted phone photos were fucking EPIC by comparison.

their plan will become clear in the next few days, when we're overwhelmed with reveals leading up to launch.

I wrote almost exactly the same thing on the previous page:

Yeah, the term "Community Manager" I would've hoped meant more to the studio pre-release than just posting the odd weekly update on their website. Say what you want about Che, but he was nothing if not a visible presence of the community side of Forza 3... at least here, anyway. Proactive, too. Not media chasing people up but actually posting here.

It is strange it has to be said.
I mean, would it kill them to release at least one pic from among the 9 daily revealed cars?
How about some short but sweet teaser videos?

You guys remember when Che tweeted the pic of the Viper with chrome wheels in '09? How crazy was our reaction!

:/
This new team sucks ass. They're actually deflating my excitement for their product.

Hasn't it gone gold already? What's holding them back? Maybe they thought the final game wouldn't deliver so they're dialling way back on the hype... =S

Maybe our expectations for three car images a day were totally unrealistic when they announced this daily reveal NOTHEYFUCKINGWERENOT.

So Motegi is back in it, eh? I think I only raced on this track because it was in the career. Hope it has an alternate time of day.

Maybe the one "Big Shot" picture is so big and so uncompressed it counts for several?

PS. Just saw an ad for this on Aussie TV. Do it, T10:

(though I'd prefer the 2007 one)

And maybe they just want to prevent inevitable comparasion with the other game in terms of car modeling and lightning.

I presume it is the only logical explanation of this "closed" strategy at this point. Pleasing the casual audience with daily tidbits while keeping lid closed in order to prevent "VS" war in field that could be compromised in more hard-core audience. Damage control in short.

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that the lack of media is bullshit. I was going to post a rant earlier, but glad I held off and found that others feel the same.

It is deflating and lessening the hype of the game, for me and for many others I suppose.

At this rate, no fucker will know the game even exists, which is a real shame.

Saw this asked earlier in the thread, but I think TGS was meant to be a real blow out with information. Was this hinted, expected, or just random waffle :(

It's 4 weeks this Friday that the game comes out for gods sake! What is the problem?

My only problem with this theory is that they're taking all the pics of cars for the "cars" section of the webpage using the garage preview screen which has been shown to have worse lighting than the rest of the game making the wheels in particular look awful. Honestly, these guys think making a facebook fan page and a twitter account is all it takes to be a community manager and they're doing a pretty shit job of it. I've dropped in to the facebook page a few times to check if there are "updates" and they don't respond to ANY of the comments on there. It's a pretty pathetic way to connect with your community imo.

Look at their twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/turn10studios You think no one is sending messages to them? Hell no. They just respond to nothing. It's basically follow this twitter for "announcements" /rolleyes

They should be rewarding fans that are following the game with screens/vids/info instead of just keeping them abreast of what's happening officially on the website.

don't worry guys, media blowout coming very soon !

it isn't wrong to think announcement should be made closer to release, you guys saw how the tons of stuff announced during E3 were soon forgotten along with the initial excitemente and how people asked for more.
I think T10 will blow their load in these 2/3 weeks.

Of course, assuming there's a load to be blown : |

It's just don't understand it.

I must refresh this thread 20 times a day awaiting for new screenshots or anything, it's now getting frustrating.

They've announced the big shot mode (which is a big thing) with what, 1 pic. Seriously! It only takes seconds/minutes to do this.

Showcase the game Turn10, please.

I really hope so, I really do. I thought after last weeks reveals that the flood gates would open, but I've been hoping that for months now.

The lack of media and coverage is a little worrying for the sales of the game. There are at least 5 guys at work that will buy this game but none even realised it was out soon (all thought it was November/Christmas or new year). I don't understand the pre-release strategy at the moment.

At this point I don't even care about media anymore. I'm more curious as to what the fuck Brian Ekberg does all day. He seriously can't be spending 40 hours a week working on his week in review "article".

Hell he won't even respond to BADNED when BADNED is asking to HELP him!

BADNED said:
We actually asked them a while ago to do weekend reveals for them over at FC even just single cars but as always no answer. Communication with them is pretty much dead since six years now. I hoped with Brian it would change a bit but nothing.

FFS!

Sorry guys, it's all my fault.

I haven't 'liked' Dan's beard on Dan's Beard's Facebook page, because I do not own a Facebook.

(Fuck, seriously - someone should start a page for Dan's Beard)

Need moar car picz! (the mob mentality is spreading...)

I did see the game on Top Gear US and was sad they didn't have someone from the studio to talk about it on the show. Just about anyone from Turn10 would be better on that show that Adam Ferrara. Also, replace Tanner with a less wooden driver. Also, replace that show with a good one.

Also, brotkasten, get back to the Windows Phone hole!

Motegi seems to look much better, even when looking at the pics from my iPhone. I'm so glad that the fucking hideous cel-shaded trees from FM3 are gone. Those looked awful and made it almost impossible to take good photos on the track.

About the lack of medias, I think we're paying for the backlash they got for FM3. Sure, offscreen pictures of Che were nice and all but in the end I think it harmed the game more than anything. What I find the weirdest is that there's been zero official previews since the annoucements. Basically, we'll only get reviews now.
This lack of media might seem bad for the sales but maybe they're couting on the buzz of the early adopters which are the hardcores and word of mouth. Maybe they've finally understood that dozens of impressive big shots will do more good than releasing crappy cel phone pics.
I wonder what the video and photomode artist guys that were brought in several months are doing though, already working on FM5 for the next Xbox ?

btw, the fact the track only appears with bright blue sky suggests no alternate time of day for it. Who knows though.

I'm pretty sure we're getting some trailer for TGS.

I don't know, the "backlash" did nothing IMO. Everybody here and on forums still bought the game. Plus, Che being involved actually had me feeling they cared about the fans, it got me hyped moreso than GT5 did and I was a huge GT fan.

As for your second point the "word of mouth" isn't going to work because we have nothing to share! This is prime time for people to spend money on games and they won't be able to do it on many. I would think you would want to build hype so people don't buy other games before yours comes out.

I look at the "what games are you buying" threads and Forza 4 isn't listed much, only diehards in this thread seem to even be aware it's coming out, my friend who bought 3 along with me didn't even realize it was coming out and asked "what's new?" ... I told him Kinect shit and Autovista, plus a new lighting model ... he wasn't that excited. I'm not interested in a lot of the games that are coming out in the next few months but I see them, I'm aware of them and some have started to pique my interest.

I think it's pretty much bullshit. It's easy as shit to post a picture, or a little blurb of info that isn't too revealing. Their community manager is terrible ... at least I knew who Che was.

Of course I'm still buying it, I'm here for the game, not the shitty way they treat their fans who for me have bought Forza 3 twice (launch and UE) and will be buying the LE of 4.

But I'll admit, this thread has become a joke of sorts with the title because I think we talked about PGR4 more than we did Forza lol!

Post Non Info Depression ... it's the #1 reason hype trains crash!
