Frankie Muniz doesn't remember starring on Malcolm in the Middle

Extremely sad to hear. My god. And like another poster said, if it's this bad when he's still relatively young I can't even imagine how much worse it could get. That's a lot of brain damage to take.

I don't think you need to have any particular attachment to his career to find this distressing.

Wait Malcolm in the Middle was only 6 seasons? I thought it was like 8 or 10.

Why did I think it was longer than it actually is and I've seen the entire show.

7 seasons.
*beaten!

Really sad to hear about this. The show is one of my favorite of all time and Muniz seems like a genuine person.

I reacted the same reading this. Mostly when I think of Francis' arc. Military school, Alaska, the ranch, his girlfriend/wife, whatever the hell it was that happened towards the end....that all really took place in just 6 seasons?

It’s funny too because the last couple seasons Francis was absent in many episodes.

I had 6 before I was 20. Or at least blows to my head that knocked me out.

First one was a bicycle stunt gone wrong. Then I got run over by a golf cart. Got kicked in the head in Tae Kwon Do class. A gazebo fell in on me. Car accident. A 160 lb. Newfoundland dog jumped up on my shoulders and head butted me (though he did at least sit on me until I woke up).

Thankfully none since.

I came into this thread expecting some weird Shia Labeouf shenanigans, but the reality is way sadder.
Yep.

Much of the Internet, rightfully so I might add, is portrayed as trolls laughing at the real world.

I can ONLY speak for myself, bu I for one am NOT. I'm seriously worried for this man.

This man is not even quite my age, about a year junior to myself, and ALREADY having these kind of serious AF memory lapses. I'm seriously worried for him, if only as one human being to another.

What in the fuck

I have pretty bad memory and sometimes it eally scares me considering I’ve got a family history so this just hits a nerve for me.

I had no idea...
I've never met an actual person with CTE... I did have young patients with post-anoxic encephalopathy (read: brain damage due to lack of oxygen) with ultra-severe anterograde amnesia (being unable to store new information)... Or just young patients with memory loss following TBI.

The sad thing is that research has shown countless times that training memory has no effect whatsoever. Depending on the severity, you can get to teach some specific new information, but you can't "fix" the cognitive function itself. What works is using whatever cognitive skill is preserved in order to teach strategies and techniques to limit the handicap in everyday life.
So, no... Dr. Kawashima is useless.

In any case, unless I'm mistaken, he's at an increased risk of developing other forms of dementia (actual brain atrophy).

I haven't read the article yet, but it's unlikely memory impairment is his only symptom... I'd expect frontal and occipital lobe damage too (which, among other can respectively cause behavioral changes and vision impairment)... Mainly because in car crashes you often hit your head as if you were "nodding" (forehead first)... Meaning the brain is going to be smashed in one direction, "bounce" , and then get smashed on its opposite side (it's called coup - contre coup... Sorry about the shifty explanation).

I hope some of you will find this interesting :)

So how did this actually happen? Because that sounds like the problems of an NFL lineman fifteen years after retirement, not a 31 year old that was on a family sitcom.

I'm gonna be honest, i don't remember too much of my life at that age either. It sounds bad, but his life probably became routine to the point where a lot of these things just didn't stick out in comparison to other days.

It's easier for me to remember where things happened in the past if the context changed, like moving to a new house, or a new school, but the more certain blocks of time were similar, the harder it is to dissect them.

I'm not saying it's comparable to his memory loss, but i feel like it's somewhat normal to forget to a degree. His life may seem remarkable to you or me and hard to forget, but to him he probably had his daily routine, and was working in TV long enough for the whole experience to possibly be somewhat mundane.

no idea if this is real, but it will always make me laugh

He's telling the truth :(

Its not the memory loss and eventually dementia that worries me.

If he has CTE, its what happens when he has a depressive episode and no one is there to watch him?

Yikes. He's my age and I remember stuff at the tail end of the 80s and I could tell you my full history through the 90s. He doesn't remember the early 2000s? Again, yikes.

I read an article about him a few months ago that mentined he had several strokes by the age of 27, but it didn't say he was suffering from memory loss, too. So all of this was caused by traumatic head injuries from race driving? I feel sorry for him, this kind of brain damage can't really be fixed.

I follow him on twitter. He marathonized the whole Malcolm in the middle series a couple months ago and was sharing his thoughts about them on Twitter. Now I understand whe he said in several tweets that he didn't remember most of the filming sessions and stuff. That's pretty sad :c Hope he takes care.

How did he do this racing cars tho? Outside of a major crash I cant see how he accumulated enough concussions to do that considering all the safety involved.

Going to apologize in advance for the tangent.

Man stuff relating to memory and cognitive impairment saddens and frightens me more than anything else. The thought of how easy it is to lose your memories, cognitive capabilities. Effectively what makes a person an individual, even amongst tons of other more apparent evidence, is one of my biggest reasons for questioning religion and it's concept. The belief of most religions as that the person, body, mind, and spirit transcends right? If we can lose our memory and thus our being so easily. It doesn't really give me much hope that there's actually an "afterlife" of some kind.

Aside from the brain relate trauma, he also mentioned breaking his back earlier in the season. Racing really did a number on his body. He’s only 31. :[

He seems to really enjoy performing on that show. Rooting for him as a dark horse.

Muniz always seemed very nice, it's a shame anyone would have to go through something like this. Cranston is a saint.

Big Fat Liar is a real guilty pleasure of mine.

Concussions and CTE are two different things, and the symptoms of CTE range wider than memory loss.

I doubt he has CTE, but it's clear that his concussions have basically done major damage to his memory, it's similar to my uncle who played hockey as a kid, has to write basically everything down now on a note pad

Didn't he lose most of his money, if he ever had that much to begin with? I recall someone saying he wasn't exactly housed in the most impressive of places or had little to his name. If true can't say myself.

Saw this earlier. Very sad.

Poorly written article though. They mention he’s suffered 9 concussions, but don’t say what the cause of them was. Was it due to his race car driving?

This is what Im wondering. Any racing organization that is worth its salt tons of mandatory regulations before you get on the track: rollcages, 5 point harnesses, neck braces, etc.

Racing a car these days (in anything close to an official capacity) is actually pretty damn safe.

I don't think he lost his money. Although I don't have access to his bank account so can't say for sure.

Geez that's sad. I always liked MitM.

Especially that ep when Malcolm's mum dreams she has 4 daughters instead of sons, and the dad is this hugely obese but dedicated version of himself.

That sucks, kinda scary if it was caused by the car racing but I haven't read anything that said thats what caused it. Do a lot of car racers suffer concussions and strokes?

He seems to have a really upbeat and great attitude about it, I wonder if its all long term memory (Memento) or specific time frames.

Doesn't this guy have like major health problems now? I remember him complaining about waking up in constant pain on twitter or something. Hope he gets better

I've been watching him on Dancing with the Stars with my wife -- and, the dude it extremely likable and positive. I don't think he'd want anyone feeling sad or bad for him. He's a lot of fun to watch ... I have no doubts he's going to pick up a gig after the show, because he just seems like the sort of guy you'd want to work with.

In a way, that's one of the best things about DwtS -- people that were kind of lost in the Hollywood Shuffle get another chance, even if they're B & C listers. You also can really tell who are jerks lol

Off the top of my head, Ralph Macchio got that Karate Kid comedy right after appearing. Alfonso Ribeiro got the hosting job on America's Funniest Videos right afterwards -- which was Tom Bergeron's job ... the host of DwtS, so you know that had something to do with it.

It was 151 episodes long. That's a lot of time even though it occurred in 6 years. The Francis at school stuff only lasted maybe 2 seasons or so

Man that theme song was really an ominous prediction the whole time. I really do hope Frankie gets better from this but yeah really doubt it. Very sad.

This. Unless he wrecks a lot of cars, racing them isn't going to give you concussions.
