'Marvel: Contest of Champions' Has Grossed Over $100,000,000 So Far

: Kabam's Marvel: Contest of Champions [Free] has crossed the $100,000,000 line of overall gross income. Now, it remains to be seen how much of that $100M has gone in to stoking the freemium fires through user acquisition, advertising campaigns, and similar. Knowing how most of these games work, I'm guessing quite a bit.
That $100M came from 40,000,000 worldwide downloads, which is another pretty crazy number.

40 million downloads means if every single person in Canada downloaded the game, you'd still need to find another 5 million people to make up the rest of that number.

My wife is always asking me why the new mobile games have annoying "Timers"-I sent her this article. Because it works.

I love the use of Canada's population in the download illustration.

Well, I live in Canada and I did download the game. I also did not drop any money on it because I didn't find it fun. Marvel Future Fight on the other hand...

Didn't both MvC3 and Ultimate sell close to 4m? Assuming Capcom made at the very least $25 of each copy , after taking into account the money gone to Sony/MS/Retailers. Thats still $100m.

Or are we only talking about how much money Marvel got out of this deal? Its not even a fair comparison , We dont know how much $$$ Marvel put into this games marketing/user acquisition and how much Capcom would have spent on MvC and Marvels Cut from that.

And you cant really compare Mobile and Console games. A lot of Mobile games rise and fall , MvC has stood well and is successful after nearly 2 decades. Even the MvC2 PSN remake sold 1.4m. You can bet MvC4 will sell another 4m , and even more if Capcom follows the SF V model instead of pissing off people by releasing Ultimate 5 months later.

What's "gross" about it?

Marvel knows they can make 100 million from a bad game by exploiting gambling aspects that have become popular in mobile gaming.

It is the epitome of gross, turning cellphones into slot machines where the actual quality of the content itself is irrelevant.

I'm guessing because it's not a "real game". You know, the whole mobile gaming sucks thing and all that jazz.

If COC was good, it wouldn't be a problem.

But COC is a TERRIBLE game.

It's very very basic. It's a fighting game with 3 attacks, and one special. And different skins. You're basically trying to unlock those skins.

I just watched gameplay...there are people that actually MLG it up online when there are like 2 buttons? Never mind, just read that there are 3 lol

I'm perfectly fine with this as long as mobile gaming trends like energy refills and skinner boxes stay in mobile games and don't affect $60 console games.

But I don't think it's a terrible game along with many other people. During my time playing the game I didn't feel pressured to buying anything. Even if I agree with what you said it's also a problem with the people playing it, right? Like marvel is not tricking into playing this game.

This is why I laugh at all PC vs console debates. FOH. We're both getting the shit stomped out of us by mobile and there's nothing we can do about it but watch it happen. Not supporting it is also good but ultimately pointless because $100 million dollars?! Are you fucking kidding me? That game came out seven months ago and cost them probably a miniscule fraction of that to make.

I'm legitimately amazed and scared all at once.

I would play it if I could just buy it. I would almost rather have a subscription model than this.

Marvel console games? HA! with that kind of money I wouldn't touch consoles with a 10ft pole.
Seriously though where is my Marvel Arkham Asylum damn it!

"What, do you want console games from Marvel?"

I put $5 into it, and won't put anymore into it because it doesn't take long to peel back the layers and hit the point where you feel like you're not making any progress for free anymore. Hell, I was excited enough for this to make the OT for it, and I've almost uninstalled it multiple times now.

Glad Future Fight came along to cure me of having to put up with this thing.

Good news for fans of the upcoming comicbook in terms if it being cancelled early (in theory)

I just wish it didn't need online to pay.

Played it, was eh.

Future Fight and Puzzle Quest so far are my daily Marvel fix.

Where's my Avengers console game you asshats? And if you say Marvel Pinball, I will slap you.

The worst part about this news is that the game is awful. Future Fight is much more deserving of getting this kind of money. Heck, even Spider-Man Unlimited deserves this success more (if the currency in that game wasn't priced so disgustingly).

Hard to argue with the decisions to move popular franchises to freemium in light of news like this.

See no reason to poor millions of dollars into a console game when you can get this kind of money this quickly.

I want to know how much money Puzzle Quest pulls in. It has to be massive.
