"Freemium" 'Marvel: Contest of Champions' Has Grossed Over $100,000,000 So Far

Surely it can't be more unbalanced than MvC2 or 3, right?

Forget balance, it's one of the laziest fighters I've ever seen developed. Every character plays exactly the same outside of two moves. And those two moves are still shared amongst a huge chunk of the characters.

Indeed. Imagine a fighting game where every character was either Ryu or Rose and that's it, regardless of size, sex or background.

The sad part is some of my casual friends think the same of Street Fighter. "Everyones the same except for 2 moves , at least MK has fatalities" /facepalm. Mash a few buttons Hadoken,Shoryuken ... everythings the same blah blah.

So you can see how the casual audience cant really differentiate the quality between this and other fighters.

This is why I laugh at all PC vs console debates. FOH. We're both getting the shit stomped out of us by mobile and there's nothing we can do about it but watch it happen. Not supporting it is also good but ultimately pointless because $100 million dollars?! Are you fucking kidding me? That game came out seven months ago and cost them probably a miniscule fraction of that to make.

I'm legitimately amazed and scared all at once.

Game development itself wasn't expensive, yes, but those 40 mil downloads didn't come for free. These high grossing freemium mobile games spend crazy amounts of money to acquire users.

This is the darkest timeline

Could have made more money off of umvc3 if they allowed it to be updated and release more content like they do with their mobile games.

The Freemium business model and how it seems that people don't care that its a rip off , yet buying a full priced $60 game to them is.
I didn't feel like this game was "ripping me off". The freemium model probably has as many bad examples as it does good, like any other model.
And for your second point, I don't blame people for seeing it that way with pre orders, season passes and broken games.

I'd say Destiny is the worst example of buying a full priced game and getting hardly anything for it. For me though games like Skyrim , Witcher and Street Fighter 4 have given me so much with the base model that i've never felt compelled to buy DLC.

I read it as $100,000 and thought WOW MARVEL IS DOOMED

Then I saw the last three zeroes and though WOW MARVEL FUCK YOU WHERE'S MVC4

Good luck waiting for that to happen.

MvC 4 won't be happening for a long time, especially when Marvel can easily make a lot of money off of mobile alone just like they did for this game.

And some people feel the same way about these types of game. Which is the point I'm trying to make. It's just a matter of opinion.

And this is why I don't touch these "F2P" games. They're all scams for money printing. Microtransactions, freemium, F2P, go to hell.

If only all of us mobile players were smart enough to recognize when we are being scammed!!! :)

I'm perfectly fine with this as long as mobile gaming trends like energy refills and skinner boxes stay in mobile games and don't affect $60 console games.

It's going to get harder and harder to find devs and publishers willing to work hard and take a huge gamble to put out a respectable (and fun) product when you can crap this sort of "game" out and reap a windfall.

That's the problem as I see it, anyway.

Capcom is not exactly salivating to make MVC4 either. They want 100% of the profits and 100% of the exposure. They want SF5 to do that. MVC4 would be instantly the most popular to watch/play fighting game and make Street Fighter #2 again. Marvel would get a big cut while Capcom did the heavy lifting.

MVC4 would also hit a totally different demographic than this game, sell millions of copies at a higher price, sell DLC, and stay visible for years. edit: to clarify that Marvel may be interested in it, despite having this mobile money mill out.

This is why IMO, that Capcom needs to do something that I suggested back a year & a half ago here, where they don't need to worry about licensing any characters from anyone (except for Strider Hiryu, of course), & that they can have a fighter where it will be similar to MvC 3 in gameplay.

yeah people have been talking about Capcom Vs. game for a long time, but yes, it would be awesome.

As I've said in the past, while a Capcom All-Stars would be awesome, it wouldn't sell. Capcom doesn't have very many mainstream franchises, & the MvC games sold mostly on the back of the Marvel brand.

there are plenty of f2p games that are great and require 0 dollars from users. Try Crossy Road one day and see how good f2p can be.

I actually tried this one because it got so much hype. I understand why people likes it, but it's not for me. :)

Monument Valley is probably the best Mobile game I've ever played. It was amazing.

In the west I cant think of any except SF,RE,DMC.

If you made a Capcom All Star , most people wont recognize the characters except from those 3 franchises.
When you bring Marvel into the mix , people instantly recognize Xmen,Avengers..etc. Hence a good portion of the game is instanty recognizable to the mainstream audience.

Though I call BS on MvC selling only because of Marvel. SF,DMC,RE all outsell MvC and many other Marvel games.

I said mostly, not only. MvC3 would have sold more if it had more support & if UMvC3 didn't come back out so soon after Vanilla Mahvel 3.

But most of the characters on the Capcom roster of Marvel Vs. Capcom 1, 2, & Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 are very well known now.

Never played it, guessing it's similar to injustice mobile. I liked what NRS did there with the cross platform unlocks. I'm unsure we would have gotten some of the skins without cross promotion.

I wish there was a single player turn based or strategy rpg (like tactics ogre) on mobile from either of the big two with just an initial buy in.

I played injustice for a stretch without paying a single cent. Paying money for points is horribly ineffective, once you get into higher levels you make points quick.

Yeah, no. There are many F2P games that are actually good games. Sky Force, Under The Sun, Only One, Membrane, Retry, Nobody Said It Was Easy, Drive Ahead, Skiing Yeti Mountain, Does Not Commute, etc.

I know it isnt easy...but I have looked into trying to make a mobile game.

I need to hop on it. Flappy Bird is my inspiration.

As much as some of us dont like it...the return on investment has to have companies wanting a piece of this pie.
