How does someone so young get so fucked up. It almost sounds like he was gonna go all GTA IRL.

It's very easy to isolate yourself into a small social bubble with only like minded people. These small groups reinforce the shared sentiments, in this case xenophobia, which leads some people with "heroic" tendencies to take matter into their own hands and make things right.

We're usually looking at someone who's disenchanted and alienated from society, usually someone who feels like the society as a whole is the reason for his unease and that he has no control over his life.

France is a former empire with a lot of sway in Africa and a large number of muslim citizens, some of them highly radicalized and/or living in poverty with all that comes with it. Violent assholes from both sides of the spectrum take exception/want to use that as a tool.
Incidentally, we also have the largest Jewish community in Europe, which also favors terrorism; if there's one thing jihadist assholes and far right cunts can agree on, it's that they love attacking synagogues and Jewish schools.

But yeah, the explanation is layered and multi-factored.

I was planning on traveling to England and France on a trip this summer. I wonder if I still should.

Just do it. You got a higher chance to be randomly struck by lightning, die in a not-terrorist caused plane crash or be eaten by a shark than to die in a terrorist attack. And take the time to visit germany if you're in france anyway. We have beer!

EDIT: Really, really yummy beer. And Döner!

You'll have a great time, and you'll be fine. I'm travelling a lot this summer and am also a bit nervous about it, but it's totally irrational. People are grateful for your tourism, and there's plenty worth seeing and doing.

terrifying.

i can't help but think it's only a matter of weeks or months that there will be another horrifying terror attack, so bad that it makes me depressed for the foreseeable future :/ the Paris attacks still haunt my mind.. people like me just having fun and watching a band play and suddenly without warning just get massacred brutally by monstrous inhuman psychopaths. absolutely mind-shatteringly terrifying.

i can't take this shit to be honest. too much.

I went to Disneyland Paris a few weeks ago. It's surreal coming off the train expecting to see Mickey Mouse and there's a squad of the biggest motherfuckers you've ever seen with these huge hand cannons.

It's the same at the Eiffel Tower too. What's weird and worryingbis how quickly you get used to living in a state of mind/of society, where this normal.

It feels safe though, so don't worry, you CAN'T worry in all honesty, as that means terror has won and people don't go about their business any more.

The probability of getting killed in a terrorist attack is still fairly low

Yes, definitely.

That's like saying you're afraid of traveling to the States for fear of being shot. The probability is still really low.

Europe is not some failed state. Nothing will happen to you.

Just do it. You got a higher chance to be randomly struck by lightning, die in a not-terrorist caused plane crash or be eaten by a shark than to die in a terrorist attack. And take the time to visit germany if you're in france anyway. We have beer!

Thanks guys. It's not really that I'm worried, I just don't want to stress my mom out but she'll be worried no matter what. I know it's completely irrational. Also I would love to go to Germany but I have a friend who speaks French so we'll be concentrating on France for this trip. By England it's just going to be London and then a bunch of places in France. I definitely want Germany to be my next trip though. It's so hard to balance spending a meaningful amount of time in a place and seeing/doing as much as possible.

Update:

What we know of Frenchman's 'plot to attack Euro 2016'

Ukraine intelligence services claimed on Monday they had thwarted a plot to carry out a wave of attacks at Euro 2016. As French authorities investigate those claims, here’s what we know.

What was the plot?

According to the chief of Ukraine’s intelligence agency SBU, a Frenchman was planning to carry out as many as 15 terror attacks “before and during Euro 2016 , which starts on June 10th and runs until July 10th. The agency’s chief Vasyl Hrytsak said the alleged plotter planned to blow up "a Muslim mosque, a Jewish synagogue, tax collection organisations, police patrol units and numerous other locations."

Who was the man behind the alleged plot?

He has been named in France as 25-year-old Gregoire Moutaux, though his name has not been officially confirmed. He comes from a little village in eastern France called Nant-le-Petit, which is home to around 80 residents.

What do we know about him?

Moutaux worked as an “inseminator” for a local farming cooperative in the Bas-Rhine department, in the Grand-Est region of France near the German border. He often had reason to travel to Ukraine for his job. In terms of his background the local prosecutor Dominique Pensalfini-Demorise described him as a “nice kid, intelligent, friendly and always willing to help”. "He's a rather nice guy, who I think is actually rather well-educated. I've even invited him over for a glass of wine. I just can't understand this," neighbour Jean-Jacques Renck told France 3 TV. During searches of his police reportedly found a T-shirt bearing the emblem of an extreme right group in France. Some media reports that balaclavas and explosive materials were also found in his flat. The SBU’s Grytsak also said the suspect "expressed negative views about his government's approach to the immigration of foreigners into France, the spread of Islam and globalisation,” hence the reason this is being talked about as a possible extreme right terror plot.

How was he caught?

Grytsak said his service became aware in December that a French national had arrived in Ukraine and "began to establish contacts with a number of representatives in the (pro-Russian separatist) east." Ukraine's eastern war zone has been awash with arms since an insurgency against the pro-Western government in Kiev erupted in April 2014, Grytsak said the arrest was made on May 21st when the man was trying to cross into Poland near the Ukrainian frontier town of Yagodyn. "He obtained five Kalashnikov rifles, more than 5,000 bullets, two anti-tank grenade launchers, 125 kilogrammes (275 pounds) of TNT, 100 detonators, 20 balaclavas and other things," said the Ukrainian intelligence chief. The video below claims to show his arrest in Ukraine as he tried to cross the border. He was pulled out a car with another individual who has not been named.

How do we know he was planning terror attacks?

Other than the statements coming out of Ukraine, we don’t really know anything for certain about the alleged plot.

There were reports in France on Monday that suggested French authorities were actually skeptical about the claims from Ukraine.

The Interior Ministry in Paris was apparently treating them with caution. Tellingly France’s specialist counter terrorist investigators have not been put in charge of the probe. Currently that is in the hands of the unit that deals with arms trafficking in the eastern city of Nancy. That suggests that for the moment the French still suspect the Gregoire Moutaux may just have been planning to sell the arms on the black market once he was back in France, rather than carry out the reported 15 terror attacks.
Nevertheless it is expected that the French authorities will demand the suspect be extradite, after which more will become clear.

Is there a real terror threat from the far right in France?

Whether this turns out to be a confirmed plot by an individual with far right links or not, there is a clear threat according to French authorities. In May the head of internal security in France Patrick Calvar spoke to lawmakers in the French parliament of the risk of terror attacks from the minority groups from the extreme right. “Europe is in great danger,” Calvar said. “Extremists are gaining ground everywhere and we are in the process of moving resources to look at the ultra-right, who are looking for a confrontation.” He told deputies that the threat from these groups was being taken very seriously. "It is our responsibility to anticipate and block all those groups who would, at one time or another, try to trigger clashes among communities." French terror expert Jean-Charles Brisard told The Local on Monday that the details of the plot were worrying but said the French counter terrorist authorities will not underestimate the terror threat from the extreme right. “They will not only be looking at the threat from Islamist extremists,” Brisard said. He expressed caution saying it was far too early to speculate about the plot and the motives. But we can expect more information to be revealed in the coming days.

In Paris, a birthday party in Parc Monceau was struck, injuring 11 people, eight of them children. Several are in a life-threatening condition.

Three people were seriously hurt at a youth football match in Germany.

No shark attacks in Europe recently though.

Sadly all it takes is one of these madmen to get through and I daren't imagine the consequences.

I doubt they'll get into any stadiums, outside though it's open season, I don't think I could feel comfortable as these shitbags seem determined for a 'spectacular'

Whether it comes from a right wing lone wolf or IS crazies

I wonder how many of the posts here are people not knowing the terrorist is a right wing nut planning to hit Jewish and Islamic targets.

Not wanting to promote my home all that much, but for your next trip, if you keep to the formerly western parts
of germany you will have next to no problems communicating in english.

Two of my coworkers here in frankonia speak next to zero german (one from south korea, one from spain), and they got along just fine for the Last 2-6 years.

Before anyone asks: we're biologists and work in cancer research.

Maybe if you read them you would know.

great work by those police. I can't imagine the fear they must have felt rushing a person who they has a vehicle filled with almost 300 pounds of explosives.

Wait what?

Vassil Hrytsak, of the SBU, said the man had made contact with forces in eastern Ukraine. “He began by being interested in how to buy arms, explosives and other equipment in Ukraine.” He said the SBU had not wanted to reveal the arrest until after the end of the Euro 2016, but the information was leaked to the press.

French police said the man was from the Lorraine region of eastern France and was unknown to France’s police and security service

French local television and L’Est-Républicain newspaper named the man. A French police source told the paper there was nothing to suggest he was planning attacks and his motivation appeared to be arms trafficking. However, they complained they could say nothing for sure as they had had little concrete information from the Ukrainian counterparts.

Oh the patriotic ultra-right, attacking government buildings and religious institutions just like all the proud heroes of French history.

Fucking moron. Hopefully nothing happens at the Euros, it's not nice having to be worried about Islamic extremists and Anti-Islamic extremists. It's interesting though, people didn't really piss themselves after Brevik the way that we do when there's a Muslim attack. I guess it's because the ultra-right look like most of the population so the discrimination and fear of 'the other' is hard to pull off.

I'm rather surprised by perpetrator's goals. Also, that's an insane number of weapons. Guess he had a few friends in on it with him.

This has nothing to do with Euro 2016, why are they using it as a headline, to make it a bigger story no doubt.

1 - Typically I'm skeptical of Ukrainian police (not so long ago they were defending corrupt president and had strong ties to Russia), but this story seems somewhat legit. Lets see if this guy gets to trial.

2 - If it's true I think the scarier part of this is that this guy was driven by ultranationalism. This is getting closer and closer to a race war...

Nice to see that Putin is not only bankrolling our far right parties but also indirectly arming our far right extremists.

There are plenty of far right Ukrainians that would be more than happy to share their spoils with their rightist French brethren!

I'm Ukrainian and I don't know a single Ukrainian far right party that ever said anything threatening about any EU nation. Care to expand on your baseless statement with some information that does not include Russian propaganda?

So there a no ukrainian antisemits and islamophobs?

Sure there are, but there are plenty of those in every EU nation. Nothing really special about Ukraine there. In fact I would say that Poland is a lot worse when it comes to racism and homophobia... Far right parties win elections in Poland. (Which ironically is good for Ukraine because those are typically also pro-Ukraine parties :))

how indeed

oh okay, he was just your run-of-the-mill arms dealer. I'm sure that weaponry was going to a nice peaceful cause.

What has this to do with this incident? Neonazis support themself internationally. There are networks through over the whole world. Which makes of course no sense, but the thought of a superior race over jews and muslims are everywhere, even in the ukraine.

What's "special" about Ukraine is that those groups have easier access to arms than groups in other EU states. That's just the reality, no Kremlin propaganda necessary.

I can buy an argument about "networks". But getting weapons in Ukraine is not that easy. Ukraine has pretty tough gun laws. You are right, you can buy a tank if you really want to, but it's not cheap. Plus you still have a border to worry about. It's a lot more efficient to buy these weapons in the EU. More expensive but you are free to take them where you want to.
