At least the OS will work fine this time.
i'm suffering from troll syndrome
What features could Sony possibly add to make for the OS to jump from 512 MB to 3.5 GB in MONTHS? And why would they add 4GB of DDR5 RAM at the request of a developer if they are going to reserve the vast majority of that for the OS?
What if they want to do something special with the OS?
maybe Gaikai integration in the future will take up a chunk of the RAM, remember that thing suppose to stream PS1/PS2PS3 games
Or it could be that recording takes up 1 gig and devs can choose to not have system recording. Sony usually doesn't force devs to use OS features, so maybe they're allowing some devs to shut down recording for some extra memory. That'd be a pretty fair trade off. It's not well detailed, but I assume it would work like this, it's a block of memory for non-essential OS functions. A developer can get permission from Sony to use that block in their games, presumably by turning off some elements in the operating system, but it seems like that RAM isn't reliable, and could be reclaimed by the OS at any time, so it's unlikely for any developer not part of Sony to rely on memory that can disappear at any time, and have to code/test for all those situations.
Holy fuck. 5/6, bravo.

Leadbetter said 2 are reserved for the OS a week ago.Do we know if any of the CPU cores are reserved for non-game functions?
Richard Leadbetter said:Owing to confidentiality agreements, Reflections couldn't go into too much depth on the relationship of the Onion and Garlic buses with the rest of the PS4's processor, but we suspect that ExtremeTech's block diagram is pretty close to the mark. Note that the PS4 has two Jaguar CPU clusters for eight cores in total, two of which are reserved by the operating system.
I am not a developer so I am not going to say if the amount of reserved ram is fair or not but the last thing we want is the PS3 situation. Not to mention the machine will last up to 7 years from now and who knows what will happen in those years ??.So you expect us to believe that Sony increased the footprint of their OS intentionally so that the games wouldn't be any better than the Xbox One's? Yeah, that makes perfect sense.
That, and even if they're shifting focus to allow other things, I'm still struggling to understand how that requires 3-3.5 GB worth of memory to be reserved. It just seems ridiculously inefficient.
PS360's OSes used, what, 50-100 MB? I don't feel like these OSes need to evolve so much that they'd legitimately require 30x the RAM.
And the devices that they're trying to compete with/borrow features from (Tivo, Roku, Apple TV, etc.) certainly don't use anywhere near this much RAM for OS.
Xbox One is looking more attractive each day. Maybe I will import one, because in my country there's no release day yet.
The article is done by the same guy, by the way, that immediately posted an article claiming the PS4 could only record 7 minutes of video when it was revealed that the XB1 only had 5 minutes of record time.
His source was a Develop conference. That was done weeks ago. And he decided that it was only news that very day. And was proven to be wrong.
I'm not saying this is false, but I am saying the person reporting it isn't the best when it comes to details.
Vita let's you do hat save for opening two games at once. And that's with only 512MB. I think Sony should have allocated 1.5GB for ram, that's enough to future proof the OS.

...lolonly with the power of cell, I am not a tech junkie but both consoles seem pretty simmilar stats wise
Thanks for the reminder here Chubs people need to remember this. While waiting for an official statement that may or may not be coming.
Explain how it's a good thing or the right decision for those of us that just want the best possible games?
Does that change anything I said? Nice argument. Time to eat some crow
Its funny because you and hundreds of others believed their bullshit this time around. They want the same thing MS does. They just wont come out and say it
lol Its true. Sony doesnt care about you anymore than Microsoft does

Wouldn't a large chunk of RAM be required if you wanted to suspend a RAM-hungry game and switch to another application, then switch back without reloading the game? This feature alone could require a lot of free space.
