From (2022 TV series)

I randomly stumbled onto this show last night

I'm hooked, watched the first 4 episodes back to back. show is far from perfect but pretty damn entertaining.

anyone else watching this?

highly recommend it if you're into horror. worth a watch even if you aren't.

I watched the first 3 that are on Amazon.

I refuse to watch anymore until I know FOR SURE that this is no "mystery box" Lost type bullshit. It is a cool premise but even my wife came up with a dozen or so ways to fuck these demon things so the show had damn well give the characters some ingenuity.

I stumbled across this a few weeks back. Excellent show. I've watched the first 6 episodes so far. I'm expecting some kind of crazy twist that hopefully won't sour the show for me at the end

Watching the first ep now and the acting is quite something lol. Walter's dad from Lost is the only decent thing in this so far. Mfer surrounded by c-actors.

Oh well, will stick with it to see where it goes. I'm placing my bet on it being cancelled after season 3 (if that). Would love to be proven wrong though.

That "roller coaster engineer" dad had better start whipping up some ass kicking rube Goldberg traps for demons, that's all I'm saying.

That these folks just hide out with their voodoo Talisman bullshit irks the hell out of me.

this has to be one the most "hey its that guy" actors currently working. everybody knows him from something.

i'll check out this show.

7.8 on IMDB isn’t bad?

Midnight Mass was my favorite show of 2021 and got a 7.7.

IMDb ratings tend to be lower in general than other sites. 7.8 is actually really solid for an IMDb rating.
I read the reviews from the most prolific reviewers. Midnight Mass has way better reviews, though I personally didn’t like it much due to the ending.

(mild spoilers)

Up to episode 3 now and man, so far it's missing a lot of beats. They really should've fleshed out more characters. Hell, even the ones they currently have are about as 2D as you can get. We still know almost nothing about anyone and despite the sheriff coming off as 'the main character' to root for we still have no clue as to who he is or where he came from. Even that whole thing where they 'put someone in the box for the first time' could've been handled so much better if it concerned a well established character, someone you might've cared about as a viewer. And the same goes for the daughter who chooses to stay with 'the others' (lol) because... reasons? Aside from not making any sense it could've had a much bigger impact if she wasn't such an insufferable shit and they made her a more sympathetic character from the get-go.

This show could've been really something, if only they took a page out of something like LOST. I know that also took its time with characterization as well (or fleshing out the mystery) but even in season one you got a really good sense of every character, what motivated them and what their backgrounds were.

If From (terrible name btw) doesn't at least pose the question as to why they are all there, other than "sheer coincidence" of course, during season one it will be a massive waste of time. Sure aping LOST wouldn't be original but there's plenty you can still do with that approach and make it a lot more interesting than it is now.

my wife and I watched this whole thing in like a week. It’s solid but kinda fell apart at the end there. I’ll watch season 2 for sure. Also the protags wife is a total milf.

Watched episode 4 and it's so embarrassingly bad, I'm surprised it's gotten the mild positive reception that it has on GAF.

I'm going to continue though, if only to watch all these horribly directed extras that all stick out like a sore thumb lol. In episode 4 for instance there's a lady outside next to the Colony House who seems to want to play badminton while literally standing next to the patio's railing that someone else is lounging on, all while making erratic movements with the racket. All this is happening in the background while the actress, who portrays the daughter of the RV family, is failing miserably at basic acting and only comes across as even more insufferable in the process. It's all hilariously bad and I can't wait to hate-watch it more.

I'm just 2eps in, have refused to check anything more about it other than its currently sitting at 94% critics and 87% public on Rotten Tomatoes. Went in blind and man that 1st episode had me fucking hooked, its got scares, its got balls to the wall gore and a what the holy fuck is going on and all from the first episode, the 2nd one had me on edge the way through it as well and if the scores are based on the entire series, then this one is gonna be a helluva ride, anyone else feeling it?

If you haven't watched it, id avoid potential spoilers, all you need to really know is a family gets lost (usual wrong turn trope) and ends up in a small town they cant escape from and some seriously fucking nitemarish fuel that comes out at night

Goddammit, didnt realize i was in the gamin forum, could the mods move please to off topic, apologies!

I just watched RLM talk about it last night and Jay Bauman was pretty taken aback by how violent it was. Sounds like an interesting premise but I'm a bit of scaredy cat concerning horror media so doubt I'll watch it alone. I can handle horror games, like RE and Dead Space, but only because I have guns to blow the shit out of the monsters.

Just looked to see if it was available in the UK but can’t find it anywhere. Wiki says it’s distributed by Netflix outside the U.S. but doesn’t look like it’s on there at the moment.

Yeah it sounded intresting from what they saw. Can't wait for there not guaranteed review of The Batman, since the 100k comment like was guaranteed to be smashed, unlike them watching The Batman which is not guaranteed.

I still haven't seen The Batman, not sure its for me, but I'll watch it just to hear the music in it as my cousin performed 20-30 mins of piano for it. Is the piano good? If that question even makes sense, I'm not sure its solo pieces of part of the orchestra.

The show is kind of fun but it seems even more cynical than Lost with the mysteries it's pilling up. It's also kind of poorly directed and acted sometimes but that doesn't bother me too much given I don't have high expectations from it anyway.

I finished this a while back. It is good and violence and gore are great. It does dragged a bit. I recommend checking it out

What is it, zombie/monsters type thing?
Well if you really want to know
It seems that they're The Sluagh. Celtic/Irish in origin. Hosts of the undead. Sometimes takes the form of a flock of raven/crows.

First 3 episodes are good, but then wheelspin kicks in and it falls into the same traps as other "hanging mystery" shows like Under The Dome and Siberia.

The pace slows with every episode padded out with lame soap-opera, character motivations start flip-flopping from scene-to-scene in order to unconvincingly generate "drama" and incidental detail is piled on top with zero effort actually made to resolve anything.

Competently enough made but its pretty bad overall. Watch the first 3 eps and basically you can skip the rest, because the story doesn't develop to any real degree past the initial setup.

Fuck. I felt this from the 2nd episode itself. I have only watched the first 3 episodes. I loved the first episode. But 2nd episode onwards it fall into the same trope/trap of focusing on the character drama rather than the core mystery. The reason people like shows like these is the unique premise of the central mystery. So why do all these shows instead focus on the boring character drama that no one wants to see? Sad

This is a recurring issue with all of these shows. Outer Range has fallen into it, Night Sky looks to have as well (only watched the first ep TBF). The writers are only interested in personal drama, but producers have realized that if you slap a sci-fi genre skin on it the nerds will turn out in force. But the writers aren't science people, they dont know or care about internal consistency, logic, making a show Bible, or engaging in the genre mystery at all.

Used to be genre shows were heavily focused on the genre aspect. Think about Stargate, sliders, early trek. Shows these days are more like Quantum Leap where the genre aspect is really just a framing device for the human story.

The biggest issue for me is the flip-flopping. Its astonishingly bad writing, but they all seem to do this thing where character A says "we must do this" and character B goes "No! we must do this other thing". Then literally in the next scene its reversed and A wants not to do thing, and B is demanding that they do. And then it happens again, without any consistency or internal logic.

Its all for function, to create conflict in what otherwise is a linear series of events, and it happens over and over again! What's worse, they do this with most of the characters, and once you see it... You cannot ignore it. There's no evolution or sense of inner life, they just get jerked around to maintain the illusion that the plot is actually moving forwards.

Its super formulaic, and From is particularly blatant because its relatively short 10 episode run gives this stuff nowhere to hide. Even structurally its by-the-numbers.
About half way in I accurately predicted that episode 8 would be the "flashback" ep, 9 would be the setup to some sort of resolution, and 10, would deliver little payoff outside of another cliffhanger!

just wondering but why are you guys who find the show terrible finishing the show? as soon as a show seems bad, I immediately stop watching. like I made it 20 mins into boba fett before I realized it was crap and immediately abandoned the show.

I liked it, it had a lot of shortcomings, but it was enjoyable enough. At least they tried to give some dimension to the characters (aside from the main family who were terrible people)

Have been hearing a lot of good things about this one but it's definitely the type of show I'll wait to be completed before watching.
I've been burned by too many mystery box type shows before
