From Software has garnered a reputation for making hardcore games like Dark Souls (shown) for hardcore gamers, and while the developer says that won't change, a switch of venue might be in order.

Speaking to GameTrailers, From's Masanori Takeuchi (head of R&D) and Eiichi Nakajima (executive producer and director of business development) say they see the company branching out to smart phones and tablets. Nakajima said From is "considering future tablet and smart phone development, other new projects, and connecting our users with a lot of other publishers."

While smart phones and tablets may be known for their casual gaming experiences, From knows what's made the company popular. "If we do go down that path," mused Takeuchi, "it's not going to be what you see on the market today, [which are] more watered down, less 'core' experiences. We like to make games for core gamers, so if we take that approach, it's going to be a core experience on a tablet, something that gamers are going to love."

Touching on other matters, Takeuchi said that the company would like to return to the King's Field franchise, and that it's currently considering a PC version of Dark Souls.

Consider developing Dark Souls 2.

Yours truly.

EDIT : The thing that killed King's field for me was controls/pacing. If they return to it please be third person... Athmosphere was great, but IMO Demon/dark's is the superior formula.

King's Field Additional on the PSP makes me never, ever want to see these types of games ever made for a mobile platform.

Well, I assumed the part about King's Field was separate from the mobile thing, since it said "touching on other matters."

Well then...I can't say no to this. But isn't it a hard sell in a sense? The Souls series started because of King's Field. And I have a hard time seeing many people clamoring for the slow, prodding nature of the KF games over the more open nature of the Souls games.

EDIT: Also, I think a big thing the title is missing is that the original article from Gametrailers confirms the Souls series will continue. Das big news.

Holy crap, would build a new gaming PC just for more Dark Souls if they do. King's Field could be good match for tablet too with the slow pace, but i think turn-based games would work better there.

And I thought their controls couldn't get any worse.

Stop considering, From Software. Just dooo iiit! Actually I'd like a King's Field game on PC. They look very interesting

There's a program to make King's Field games for PC. It was made by From, too. It came packaged with a PC remake of the first game IIRC.

No they didn't, since their games have always been janky. A few happen to be amazingly well designed, but there's always plenty of jank to be had.

So what? I'm talking about moving development over to phones. No smartphone game is going to touch Dark Souls. Impossible to make a game like that on phones. Couldn't care less if "Angry Souls" ran at a perfect 30fps.

I didn't get the impression that this would mean a large shift in development, just another possible avenue for them to pursue. Hell, it could just mean porting some of their back catalog through the PlayStation Suite.

Not to mention that everything in their press release counter-indicates "Angry Souls."
