Its linked to the Don't Tread on Me gimmick they started during the tea party, which is actually meant to be about England being an oppressive government to the colonies, and yet they don't see the irony of an elected official dictating what can be done in her county on the basis of religion. The colonist left England so they wouldn't have a church state over them and now the have become the church state in some respects.
