Fromsoft has the best artists in the gaming industry, and it's not even close (PICS HEAVY)

They are so good at creating amazing looking aesthetics that don't only look good because of assets, but also the combination of colors, and how well they match the scenery, something that almost every dev out there doesn't even try to do. And they're doing all of this on an extremely outdated engine from the 19th century. Now imagine what they could've achieved on Decima, or another quality engine.

It's simply unmatched. And it's just one game.

No. Ridiculous claim when it's highly dependent on the game and art direction. Throwing thousands of artists who do excellent work (even as a unit) aside for one company lmao.

None of those images looked so amazing that I would say these are far and away the best artists in the game industry. Most have a generic fantasy look and some of the textures are terrible to non-existant.

Huh? Name other RPGs that achieve this level of artistic amazingness.

None of the elder scrolls get close to awe you can get from vistas in Elden Ring.

They manage to achieve perfect art direction that enforces the atmosphere. Bloodborne is vastly different from Elden Ring and both set a distinct tone captured in all of what their artists touch. From the way enemies look, architecture, landscapes, down to equipment.

Throw in the music that's an aside to really go big and yowza!

The only open world game I think achieves this is actually red dead redemption 2. That games art direction matches its tone, and has moments that are impressive for what it's setting out to do, but it doesn't hold a candle to the vast pallet a fantasy RPG has to play with compared to a Wild West game.

They are pretty good but also really stagnant and technologically ancient by now imho.
I don't even have to go far back to find, to my taste, better art making good use of modern tech with Expedition 33.
But in the end art is highly subjective.

There are no games on smaller scale that offer this kind of original and varied scenery, and ER is one of the biggest open world games there is. Everyone knows the engine is bad, so there's no reason to talk about textures, lighting, etc. Aesthetics are always more important than technical power.

As an artist (specifically cartoonist) All I can claim is that Art is subjective.

I love the souls series' gothic and deranged japanese horror aesthetic but from an artistic point of view I'd sooner choose Zelda. Or most of nintendo in general. (MK8 aged VERY well)

Oh, and cuphead

I remember a few years back when Zombie games were all the rage. It seems to have shifted to Dark Fantasy aesthetic now as seen by most of the games shown in the last week.

Not a fan.

Silly thread, it's entirely subjective, also artists just make things they are told to make, you're talking about the person that sets/creates the art style, which can be the art director, but also the series creator.

You want me to take pics of a wall? I show the scenery/vistas, the way to showoff an open world game. Kinda obvious.
So let me get this straight, you're crowning FromSoft as the undisputed best artists in the entire industry because… the sky looks nice? LMAO. We're really out here ignoring character design, architecture, animation, environmental storytelling, lighting direction, UX, combat readability, even basic visual cohesion, because a sunset over some jpeg mountains hit different?

Honestly, you're doing FromSoft a massive disservice with this take. Reducing their entire artistic achievement to 'pretty sky go brrr' completely ignores the actual brilliance of their design

You're not talking about art direction, you're fetishizing skyboxes. And calling it 'kinda obvious' just makes it funnier 💀

They are fantastic. But they should trade a few of them artists for some people who can optimize frame rate. I'm scared to see what they will do with that Nintendo 2 game.

Here's how subjectivity works:

I think Astro Bot has better art direction than Elden Ring.

You're telling me this as if the only thing shown are skyboxes. Skyboxes are obviously there because they look nice, fit the environment perfectly. I can't fit everything in a single picture, and the architecture you're referring to, is also on there. Have plenty more pics of the environment, but that's enough. Or maybe a fromsoft game running on a better engine as well?

You opened with 'best artists in the industry, not even close' and dropped a slideshow of clouds and distant castles. Now it's 'well obviously I can't show everything'? 😂

You're the one treating skyboxes like a thesis. No one's mad they look good, but if your whole argument hinges on screenshots where 80% of the frame is atmosphere, maybe don't act like you just proved a PhD in game art direction. You're not helping FromSoft, you're reducing their brilliance to desktop wallpapers

They definitely have amazing stamina. Berserk tribute since 2009, over and over. They also made the famous Bloodborne hat.

They're desktop wallpapers worthy for a reason lmao. You're literally admitting how good the environment looks. Glad we agree😁

So WTF is going on with these ads that take up half of my page I can barely read the goddamn thread. Cheap bastards.

Jeff please have some fucking humility. If the artists are so good why are they constantly reusing old assets and not making new ones

Lets calm down. It's not on mobile hardware made to be played on a bus that Fromsoft is gonna push their artists to the limit. For that, we gotta wait for the true Miyazaki banger that comes out after Duskbloods. The game that has been secretly cooking for a while now.

This is where the full potential of the studio and its incredibly artists will be revealed to us all.😎

I personally think they're good, but also quite overrated. People constantly use the whole "best art design" spiel as an excuse for their severely lacking visuals and performance on a technical level.

You know, Fromsoft, you can have incredible art design and great technical visuals. As endless teams have shown us over the years:
