FTL: a game about managing a spaceship in an infinite galaxy

I think if you stop in the Repair stations in the last sector they will restock you on various things. You just need to choose whether you want to use them up before the boss fight.

Yeah, I probably should've visited one of those. D:

Ah well, lesson learned. Maybe next time.

Anyone got the Bird of Prey achievement for the stealth ship? Managed to kill a few ships while my stealth cloak was active and I didnt get it. Either I am missing something or its bugged.

Not sure what to make of this just yet. Audio and visuals are wonderful (soundtrack is worth the £10 total) but like Binding of Isaac I think the permadeath might prevent me enjoying this fully. Doing really well with the engi craft then having two groups of mantis board isn't my idea of fun at all. Having the ion gun stun-lock the shields then weapons of enemy craft alternately was working nicely too.

Doesn't the engi craft make the Kestrel utterly obsolete? I just can't play without disabling enemy weapons.

I love layout B of the Kestrel. Easily my favourite so far and the one I can play with the best. Its great how people can like different playstyles in this game. Very well designed. I actually preferred not running with Ion weapons (but many cheap normal weapons), and tons of great drones.

You can get ion weapons on the Kestrel, but it's luck-based. Someone already mentioned one option is to restart until the first store has an ion weapon.

Cool, cool. I'm guessing ion is a damage type, so there may be other weapons and means of delivering that damage. It's also purely anecdotal and likely down to the RNG, but I think I get more surrenders by locking down systems rather than nuking.

Yep, there are ion bombs and ion blasters (I think I saw single and dual shot versions). Some seem to do various amounts of ion damage and I'm not positive how that works. If you hit a shield with 4 ion damage, how many shields does it take out? Is it possible for an ion shot to randomly go through shields or does it always hit the shield first?

Ion always hits shields first, but there's a chance an ion shot might get through the shields slightly before the shields reactivate

What's the quickest route to unlock layout B?

Two. Think of one damage as one energy bar, so it takes two hits to knock out one level of shield. Ion Bomb got me the furthest I'd gotten on normal, until some stupid slaver ship decided to dodge almost every shot I launched at it, draining all of my missiles. Then I just had to watch my beautiful ship slowly get it's hull chipped away.

While this game is great I would enjoy it even more if the galaxies (gameplay) were more infinite than limited.

Is there any future plans for a more open ended gameplay mode for this game? ie not being constantly chased and then fighting a boss ship at the end but more like Elite, freeroaming in random galaxies

I don't think there were any future plans revealed yet, but given what looks to be a hell of a successful launch, I assume things will change and we'll hear something eventually.

That would be nice, and maybe having more persistent stuff to unlock like weapons or ships could be nice. Or just more options period, or some slight extra edge to avoid some of the random deaths. Even in Nethack there are things you can do to be relatively safe in some situations, and there are some here but maybe a couple more could be good.

One potentially good thing in regard to infinite galaxies was Notch just now saying "Well then, I guess you can officially add FTL to the list of games that inspired 0x10c. GO PLAY FTL RIGHT NOW, it is amazing!!" If he ends up getting 0x10c put together in a way that feels fun to him, it could be pretty neat -- imagine doing FTL sort of things but in first person, and with the aid of custom computer programs to do things like manage ship systems.

You could play through a roguelike over and over hoping for a 'perfect' run, but the fun of it to me is in trying to make do with the hand you're dealt.

So true. This game is taking the place that Desktop Dungeons had in my gaming time as the fast game to just burn a few minutes between real life responsabilities. I'm hooked. I've reached sector 5 but only because I always avoided conflict if possible and the Engi were extra helpful.

How does boarding ships work? Granted I only tried it once on some AI drone...but is it possible to steal them then sell?

If not how does it work for actual manned ones? Just hope I kill the crew while I keep their guns locked down from ion shots?

Farthest I got was the second last area before the boss...in easy. Had horrible luck when I lost 3 crew to o2 levels and people hijacking my ship in sector 3 or something.

Can you take over AI ships? I figured that your crew would die because there's no Oxygen.

When you take over manned ships, the idea is to just kill the crew as fast as possible. When that happens, it just treats it like any other victory. I assume you get more salvage than if you had just destroyed the ship normally (or even accept a surrender), but I can't be sure.

I believe the developers were talking about an infinite mode during the beta, but I don't know what happened to that.

Excellent. I just started playing and it seems just what I wanted. :)

My first ship, The Phil Kestrel, is going OK but I managed to kill one of my 3 crew members in my very first engagement (didn't realize he was dying in that airless room, oops) and then immediately had to leave my pilot on a colony when he got spaceplague. Now I'm down to one crew member, and when I hit a store that had crew members for hire I had JUST used all my scrap to upgrade my lonely ship. Ah well.

LOL, nicely done.

It's changing from "I need to beat this." to "How high a score can I get?".
One of my runs has an absurdly high score. I can't remember what I did. Maybe the game gave me 1000 extra points just for naming that ship, Normandy.

I had time to try one more run to get 6 races, but no luck. I did get, 'No Red Shirts.' Absolutely crushed the big baddie (I took two points of hull damage), but my ship wasn't prepared to deal with drones.

New Kickstarter dream. This exact game ported to the old Homeworld engine with more ship variety and whatnot. While we're at it I want more Elites and Privateers.

Given that they received 2000% more than they asked for, I'm going to go ahead and say that they'll add that in eventually.

You're probably the only person I know who finished a run (on normal no less!) Any tips for someone who's getting slammed badly?

Fuck boarding parties.

They wreck me but I can't get them to work the other way. I sent two mantis once and another time two rockmen and they got slaughtered. Fuck this game and fuck mantis scum!

My only wish is for more events and more 'good' events. More of everything. Well....except mantis scum

Only thing that works is sucking oxygen out while they board and pray they die.

Long Range Scanners mean you can avoid enemies if you want to.

This. Just expand out the number and variety of random events.

hmmm... can't you lock intruders down with proper door upgrades?
You can slow them down...if you spend the scrap on maxing doors.

You can fight them by venting areas of the ship...if you have scanners working or a slug on your ship and they're not moving around.

Or you can fight them hand to hand...if you have mantis and rockmen, or if you fight in the medbay, or if you aren't being fire on at the same time where your crew need to stay at their stations.

Or you can fight them with an anti-personnel drone...if you have one, and a drone control system.

There are various ways to counter various things, but the problem is that seems very down to luck that you will have enough scrap to afford a full variety of countermeasures, combined with stores that sell exactly what you need. :P If you upgrade your doors you might run into slugs who kill your entire crew by disabling the O2 system, for instance, because you didn't upgrade THAT to level 3 instead.

hmmm... can't you lock intruders down with proper door upgrades?
No. Just takes them longer. God forbid if they get access to your door control room and take it out...

I'vehad the upgraded blast doors only work twice for me where I drained the air out of those bugs.

Side note: I had a chance to buy a slug...I now wish I did.... :(

Ugh, unlocked the Engi ship and rolled out with that when the Phil Kestrel bit the dust. Found the Engi ship to be terrible, didn't like the ion cannon/ship drone combo at all. Managed to not shed any tears when the whole ship caught fire and died.

Aim cannon at shield. Deploy drone. Profit.

Don't you start talking shit about Phil! >:(

Intriguing game. Definitely the most instantly rewarding title I have played this year.
Love the 'arcade' take on EVE like music.

yeah, that's what I did. Just didn't like it, takes too much micro with the fast firing ion cannon and it made repairing the ship/keeping crew alive a pain. I was glad it died relatively soon.

Man, I even get attached to the randomly generated crews. Rescuing an unknown alien race that you've never seen before on your ship is just way too cool.

You can press the autofire button in the bottom center if you just want your weapons to keep firing at the same targets.
