saw the first episode last night. this was far more silly than the first which really annoyed me. I also thought the OP felt short (only to read here that it was) but I didn't think it was that good anyway. is the rest of the series this silly, cause that will determine if I continue to watch it.

One of my favorite things about anime is how they'll throw wackiness into melodramatic plots. Never ending gloom and brooding can get old. A decent visual gag (and FMAB has awesome visual gags) is a nice break every now and then.

Also, I'm disapointed that AS isn't rocking this in HD.

What is the point of the CNHD channel is they never show anything in HD.. I mean, FFS this show already exists in HD.

They really mangled the show by cutting the beginning, but they have to make money, so that is understandable. However not showing this in beautiful HD was a crime. There was no reason not to! THe source is HD, the channel is HD, so what gives? What could possibly be the reason?

Oh and was Bradley's voice the same voice actor from last time? If so, it seems like he is playing in differently!

I agree and FMA is one of my favorites because of that.

Huh, Funimation didn't dub the OP? I'm not overly familiar with them, but I got the impression that they did that. :lol

I don't think I've ever seen any show from them where they dub the opening and ending songs.

My only reference really is Ouran Host Club and they definitely dub the OP and ED for the dubbed version. It sounds weird because it sounds like they're using the original music tracks and just layered English vocals on top, so the singing is much louder than the music.

Yeah I thought the redubbing of openings/endings was strictly a Geneon fetish. I've got a hefty amount of Funimation stuff and it's all the original stuff.

The only thing I can think of it depends on the company (of that anime) and the artists who sings the op and/or ending that allows Funimation to do it. They've dubbed their songs for quite a long time now.

To give a few examples of old and current:

YYH ed 3 & 4:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeMm18QwvqM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kgd4_Zapav4&feature=related

One Piece op 3 & 4:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-GG6LwEgT8

For the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime I remember that it was a deal with the recording company that wanted them to play only Ready Steady Go for the entire english airing on Adult Swim. It was only later that they allowed Rewrite. Of course, because they were dealing with the recording company, all the songs were to be left alone.

I gotta give Funimation credit for jumping on the series this fast. Especially since it's still going on in Japan. I really, really hope they do Blu-rays for this. Otherwise, I'd wait for a boxset. I'm really starting to sound like a broken record. :lol

Already got it pre-ordered although I might remove it depending on the number of episodes in proportion to the price.

Yea I think they are the best ever. Maybe peeps should give the english dub a few more episodes before they make final decisions on the dubs. Give time to heal! (YYH ending shoutout)

Yeah that was weird. Though they weren't bad. I am still a little mad Vic didn't get to sing Shissou like he wanted (they said "why would Tamaki be singing the ending?" v_v) And he did such a great job with the new Dragonball opening too. From what I understand he was still the one who translated the lyrics.

Speaking of which, I also liked the English version of Brothers that Vic sang. It's not better than the original (and doesn't make a lot sense, since Vic has to play both parts :lol ) but it's still pretty good imo.

Also:

Ouran
Negima!?
One Piece

They've never dubbed the OPO/ED from the first series, so I wasn't expecting them to do it for this either. And I'm astonished as to how much Al's new VA sounds like his last one.

But... it's like that in the manga. And again when they try to explain equivalent exchange.

Sorry, I forgot. But, still, stuff like where the character design changes spontaneously may work in the manga, as every panel is separated from the next. In the show, though, it usually ends up looking kind of jarring. Thankfully, they pretty much stop doing that stuff after too long.

What? I watched this last night in HD. The quality was the same as my FMA:B blu-ray. Wasn't cropped at all and in WS.

For the record, I have Cartoon Network HD.

Anyways, Travis did better as Roy, Vic sounded better as Ed, Maxey did a great job with Al, Colleen sounded less like a robot - but not that much, and Lust didn't sound sexy enough.

And boo for the butchered OP and ED!

On the other hand, ep. 44 was awesome. :D

The original source on this is 16:9. It was letterboxed on CN:HD. This means they were taking the letterboxed 4:3 SD source and stretching it to fill the 16:9 CN HD feed. So they basically double screwed over the image quality. Looked better on the non-HD CN.

It was 100% not in HD. If that is the way the BRD looks for region B I am going to be extremely disappointed.

The first series was incredibly silly early on too. It took a big mood shift later on, but the early episodes had lots of comedic moments.

Yeah. That's one complaint I really don't understand. People must have forgotten the first half of the old series.

Weird. Didn't really notice actually. Anyways, looking at the packaging on the Region A FMA:B from Japan. It's resolution is 1920 x 1080p 16:9.

Guess I'll just have to wait for Funimation to release their BD in May to compare.

Time Warner just added CN HD. It is completely possible that TWC isn't actually carrying the feed yet and is just stretching the regular CN feed. I would hope Time Warner isn't *that* evil, but I wouldn't be shocked.

We'll see, I get my CNHD through AT&T U-Verse (watched the ep at 1am PST) so maybe my feed's different than yours, but it's rather stupid if they weren't consistent all-across the board.

EDIT: And, yeah, Vic is amazing as Ed, as usual. He knows that character inside and out by now.
Ehh...really? Vic's Ed was always waaaaay too douche-y to me in the old series, and I always thought he vastly over-inflated Ed's less admirable characteristics. I actively disliked Ed Elric in the dub of the first anime (in a series that otherwise had an excellent dub), whereas I very much liked him as a character in the Japanese version.

I will say this, though, and that is that Vic was much better in this episode than in the previous series, and I noticed a change in his performance between the first and second halves of the episode. In the second half his was much more playful and energetic and showing a much greater range (which is correct for this incarnation of Edward), whereas the first half of the episode felt like he was still playing Ed from the first series, causing him to miss the tone on one or two moments where Ed is supposed to be playing around a little bit. It was like he started off playing the character the same way as before and one of the directors part way through said "no, try and do it like this." Either way, the improvement was noticable. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Next week will be interesting, since there's a lot of young Ed. Generally speaking, though, I'm pretty pleased with the Brotherhood dub so far. The only issue I really have right now is that Alphonse's voice is a little TOO muffled and sounds a little too girly at times (though spot on about 80% of the time), but those are things I expect to get sorted out very quickly, probably over just the next few episodes.

As for the cut opening and ending, Brotherhood episodes at full length are 24 and a half minutes. Adult Swim's half hour timeslots are 22 and a half minutes long. So they have to lose 2 minutes somewhere along the way. It's a much better option than doing what Syfy does and just cutting up the show willy nilly.

No, I have CN HD. Pretty sure you are wrong about it being broadcast in HD.

Like I said, I couldn't tell if it was really in HD or not from the broadcast because it looked a lot like the episode did when I watched it on blu-ray.

So again, I don't doubt what you're saying regarding what CNHD is showing, but rather all I'm saying that I couldn't really see a difference in quality.

I didn't watch the SD feed because I was too busy watching the livestream of ep. 44 through Keyhole TV so I can't compare the difference.

That's all fine if you don't like the jumping back and forth, but don't use the manga to justify that. The manga has continued to do it throughout the series.

This time on FMA Brotherhood: fanservice!

Great episode. :D I was really laughing when
they "kidnapped" Ed. The blond guy was just pointing his fingers at him.
:lol :lol Actually, that whole sequence in general was great.

Next ep looks awesome,
Ling finally makes his sorry ass return. :p Or long-overdue, I should say.

Damn I missed the Adult Swim english premiere. Had no idea it was airing so soon. Will have to catch up and tune in next week.
You could always download it on Xbox Marketplace or PSN. For a price of course.

Masked Man

I said wow
I forgot to mention this earlier, but the way they recapped the Youswell story in Brotherhood was absolutely hilarious. :lol

I felt like
Greed killing Beado in Ep. 44
could/should have been a little more dramatic, but maybe it's less shocking for me because I saw it coming. I liked the part directly after, though, with
Greed having flashbacks and getting chastised by Ling
. Ep. 45 awayyyyy~

Haven't watched the dub in full, but Mustang sounds like he's going for a voice that's too deep. =/

oh boy, having people starting out with the dub talking in the same thread as people who are following the series in japanese as it gets into the mid 40s of episode numbers is just BEGGING for bad things to happen

You will see what will happen in a month or so, when people following dub will be around Nina and Tucker and Brotherhood in Japan will be moving into final arc (it should start around ep 49-50 at this rate). This can turn into something really, really fun :p

I'll balance it out by spoilering stuff for the sub crowd, who only watch the anime, with manga spoilers.

Let's do this!
Not really. Or really? No, not really.
