Fumito Ueda speaks about TEAM ICO next project

despite the previous rumors, the project won’t be a direct successor to Shadow of The Colossus, he is trying to make something new:

Shadow OF the Colossus developers speaks about next project 13.02.06 - The Famitsu spoke the Colossus with the developers of Shadow OF about its next project. Fumito Ueda says that it will not be directly a successor to Shadow OF the Colossus. Rather it would like to try something new out, because that was its appointment. The work on the new project did not begin yet, however Ueda has already a few plans and drafts.

After Shadow of the Colossus, I am very interested at what they can pull off with the PS3. It boggles my mind at the visuals and the art and everything that they could possibly pull off.

Note: Shadow of the Colossus was the first game in a LONG time that made me stop and look around and take in the scene. I am extremley happy Fumito Ueda is in the gaming industry and hope his team is able to pull off another masterpiece

I was playing Shadow of the Colossus last night and anywhere I go in that game just puts a smile on my face because its just so damned beautiful.

I can't wait for Ueda and co. to unveil their next project.

Consider me hot in the pants.

ICO is still beatiful, and that was a PSX game that was moved, and ran at some hack of a resolution.

SoTC was my GOTY. Needless to say, it must have come with a flux capacitor on the disc, as what they pulled off with the PS2 is inhuman.

Just the possibilities of what you'll do has me erect with anticipation.

I see it now, ave a girl, while fighting the planet, at the same time!

Yeah, that's gonna be a good year, and (not that DMC4, MGS4, Ace Combat x [unannounced, but c'mon...], and Vision GT aren't enough) affirms a PS3 day 1 purchase. :)

I'd like it better if they helped next-generation gaming by focusing on PLAYSTATION 3 :D.

They stated in an interview awhile back that PS3 was going to be their next project. I remember Ueda saying something to the effect of they hope the SDK wont be as hard to learn as PS2 or they'll be stuck with another long development time.

Speaking of Ueda and Co, anyone find a wrap up of Team Ico's DICE presentation? They were to be the last speakers on the floor iirc, but there's nothing on next-gen or gamespot.

They've said repeatedly they'd like to do a PSP project, so it could go either way. I just don't see this team wanting to be at the forefront of getting their arms around PS3 tech.

He agrees that it is too long, and hopes to shorten the development time as much as possible. This may not be possible, though. "If we were to make our next game, it would, naturally, be on the PS3," Ueda explains.

Team Ico is one of the few sony dev.s one could easily argue is nintendo quality, classic-pre-gcn nintendo quality, I can't wait to see what they do on ps3. Theirs is amongst the few games I'd say far more than qualify to be bought at full price.

I'd like to see them do an epic adventure game (like 30 hours) with the similar art as Ico and SOTC.

That would take many years to do with the level of polish they put in their games and the cost of the game might rise a lot. They would also need the public to appreciate the hard work put into it. SoTC and ICO should have been multi-million sellers if quality == sales... :( Sometimes average gamers' tastes are particular to say the least...

The reference is in response to whether a hypothetical console title would be on PS2 or PS3 if it were started today.

Where do you get that from? It seems to be a question of how long he'd like the development of games he makes to be since both ICO and SoTC took 4 years each to develop. I don't see the PS2 mentioned at all in that article. Then goes onto say that there next game would be on the PS3, so a shorter development period might not be possible. Going by that, it'd be even more of a reason to make a PS3 game their first priority. With them taking that long if they took 2-3 years to make a PSP game, their first PS3 game wouldn't make it out till around the very end of the PS3's life cycle.

Cry On is true spirtual successor to SotC, let Ueda do something new.

And let's hope they do it with a stable framerate.

3rd paragraph: He states that he would like to do a PSP game.

Last paragraph: The writer concludes that their next game could be a PSP or PS3 game.

The quote you keep mentioning is in response to a question about whether the product development cycle is too long. His response is, yes it's too long and would force them to move to the next-gen platform if they were to start a title today (implicitly because the current gen would have ended before they're done with development). The comment doesn't make sense if you're trying to make it out as a statement that they'll do a PS3 game over a PSP game, since both PSP and PS3 will be around in three years.

The mistwalker game....eh? whuzzah?

Well at any rate, I am looking forward to GOTY 2009 also. I guess around that time I will have to make sure I have a HDTV and PS3.

The game is said to be like a mix of SotC and Katamari Damacy.

Featuring elements that seem to echo both Katamari Damacy and Shadow of the Colossus, as your play through Cryon, Boguru grows in size as your achieve goals - seemingly revolving around helping people, with the example given of lifting a boat to carry it to safety. "The concept is to invoke a feeling of accomplishment in the player after he's come a long distance as Sally, and cleared much terrain as Boguru. As the scale changes, so does the viewpoint of the character you're controlling. And thus catharsis is born," explains Sakaguchi "By manipulating this catharsis carefully, we can create a refreshing, pleasant action experience."

So I was all, SPIRTUAL SUCCESSOR.

Interesting, this is the first time I have heard those details ^_^

Sounds pretty damn cool.

Yah they both will be around in 3 years, but it's likely going to take them another 4 years to develop a PS3 game. It took them that long to develop SoTC and that was after developing another game for the system, so they knew the PS2 by then and it still took them that long. I'd think going with a PS3 game first would be a much smarter move, considering how late it'd come out if they were to develop it after a PSP game.

Made by the people that's brought you such memorable games as Drakengard and Beat Down. :)

Why you always gotta be such a negative fucking nancy toward all 360 exclusive software?

CryOn sounds awesome, don't hate.

So you're confident they can actually pull something awesome off given the talent behind the project? I mean really, their last game (Drakengard 2) is so bad that Square Enix wouldn't even publish it outside of Japan.

Yes, man. I'm very confident. Concept sounds awesome, produced by Mistwalker love, developed by mediocre developer that with good direction might show lots of promise.

Like I said, don't hate. Such original ideas (that aren't non-games) on traditional consoles should be LOVED.

ditto- but more like the giddy face wide grin of "holy shit, this is amazin - i'm clinging onto this thing and the i feel like vertigo is kicking in"

awesome game, bought the sound track at the weekend - absolutely fantastic stuff all round.

Difficult 3rd game though - but can't wait to see what they come up with with really powerful hardware.

Yeah I get the same feeling from SotC. I am looking forward to playing it through a few more times when I get the chance.

It is one of the few games were I found myself leaning and moving with the game, a lot. I haven't done that in a long as time. I remember Pilotwings 64 doing it. And Ace Combat games.

Oh and ZOE2 using 0 shift in survival mode after I have had several shots of vodka. Now that is a lot of fun =D

For the time being, it seems that fans of Ueda will have to wait until he comes up with an idea that he's comfortable with. Though no one knows what Ueda's next game will be, he did confirm that it will be a PlayStation 3 title.

This is 1 developer atleast that we don't have to worry about taking animation seriously since SoTC and ICO prett ymuch have the best animation of any current gen game. He's also a fan of momentum based movement which will make their PS3 game all that much more impressive.

I thought Cry On was the true spirtual successor to Drakengard? :/

Oh, and I guess this means no PSP game? What happened to all those ICO Portable rumors?

Apparently they're completel fake, since according to Ueda if he did a PSP game he'd want it to be cartoony because they know they can do more realistic looking setting like ICO and SoTC. Don't know why anyone would want ICO on a portable.

I don't want to wait until 2009. I'm crossing my fingers that they'll pop something out in early 2007. But that's just wishful thinking.

Me too.

*stabs Rhindle with a knife*

Rhindle: Me too.

All he had to say was "Something new for PS3". Ah well, he said half of that. I'm just going to assume the other half's a given. :)

where was that from? first i've heard it too. sounds very interesting. is there more?

i've heard NOTHING on the game previously...

based on that, the game is played through where the user can switch between two main characters, sally (normal human?) and boguru (some sort of creature that will grow over the course of the game)
