Fun while it lasted - GAF blocked at work

So two weeks ago I started skimming GAF from work occasionally. Didn't take them long to do something about it apparently.
Oh well back to work.

Ps. No NeoGAF.net doesn't work either, anyway it would probably suffer the same fate in two weeks too.

I'm guessing you work for Siemens. Their office in Alpharetta, GA ended up blocking GAF when I worked for a Siemens-owned subsidiary several years back when I was fresh out of college. Boy was that job boring.

Good thing I have a smartphone with LTE that's faster than my current company's broadband. Not to mention I'm far too busy at this job to dick around.

Wrong. Guess again. ;)

It's clearly a well orchestrated fake. People on the internet are so tricky. They're probably using it to steal gaffes passwords so they can hijack accounts and make strange posts. You could be a hijacker for all I know. Where were you last night?!

Edit: in all seriousness, be careful when clicking on ips

OK, i didn't know that... sorry

I have the same problem - after three years of fun my work blocked neogaf, along with reddit/leagueoflegends (but not normal reddit, surprisingly).
It sucks so bad.

I once got around a filter at work by emailing the company that made the filter, claiming to be the owner of the site that was blocked. I told them it was miscategorised (in fairness it was flagged as porn when it clearly wasn't) and asked for it to be re-evaluated, and sure enough it was unblocked a few days later.

www.megaproxy.com is a free browser based proxy, you get a daily limit, but Neogaf sans images should not trouble that. You can't login, browse only.

You can install tunnelbear.com which gives you an IP tunnel with 300mb free a month, you can login and post using this, but need to be able to install the software on your work PC.

Use Windows Remote Desktop to log in to another PC and browse neogaf from there. There is a hack to enable Remote Desktop on all flavours of Windows 7. http://www.raymond.cc/blog/enable-remote-desktop-connection-in-windows-7-home-premium/. No need to install anything on your work PC, but IT may have disabled the Remote Desktop program. There are alternatives like Splashtop and TeamViewer, but I'm not familiar with them. Google Chrome also has Remote Desktop features in a beta release.

If you are really desperate then you can use the Google search cache to browse, a bit of a pain, because each thread requires a new search before you can access. Sometimes just changing the thread page number in the search cache URL works. For example http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=735041

Another avenue I haven't explored yet is hosting proxy software on a Wordpress blog, see guide here: http://lamp.sangkrit.net/2012/07/14/make-your-own-proxy-site-using-wordpress/

Finally I believe NeoGaf could help us all if they enabled HTTPS on the site. That is often a good way through a firewall as all the traffic is encrypted.
Good luck doing any of this on a work computer.

Yeah this just happened at my work place a couple of days ago too. I wonder what changed.

Installing any proxy or addons is out of the question. Cant do that at work. :(

GAF as a site got added to a blacklist somewhere since any "gaming" sites are blocked. At least that is what happened at my work. We have Ironport (email and web security) which is sold by Cisco.

Yeah, should be what actually happened. GAF just got blocked at my work today.

If I couldn't browse Gaf at my work I would go insane.

Same... I have a lot of free time at my job and GAF makes it bearable. Thankfully I also have fully unrestricted internet access (which is also 100mbps both up and down), so I really feel for my GAF-at-work brothers, I know how much I'd be suffering without it!

I would probably die if GAF got blocked at work, makes the day more enjoyable reading threads and catching up on news.

Just to clarify, only the tunnelbear solution requires you to install anything.

www.megaproxy.com is a web based proxy that works with any browser, no installation necessary, not even a web plugin. They may have blocked this site.

Remote Desktop Connection client is built into Windows at OS level. The program could be redistricted at Group Policy Setting, but typically it is the incoming part of RDC that they restrict. What I suggest is using RDC client to connect to a PC outside your workplace firewall. This is something you have much more control over.

The suggestion for using Google cache is the one avenue that always works. You can use HTTPS to access the cache so your request is encypted. I don't know many workplaces that lockdown Google?

The Wordpress approach entails using an external website that any browser can access with no add-ons, that you control to then proxy elsewhere. Again your IT would have to block the hosted site, but they would have no reason to restrict access to what would appear to be a website of no particular interest. Hell, you could even make the site one that is filled with content relevant to your workplace.

So to reiterate, most of these suggestions should be possible at most workplaces unless they have unusually draconian IT policies. The Wordpress solution entails the most work, but gives you the most control. Megaproxy is a good half way house without being able to post. Google cache is means of last resort as even browsing requires juggling tabs and no ability to post.

What a boring explanation. I like to think it's some Final Fantasy 8 situation where
everyone finds out that they all actually work in the same place
.

megaproxy.com works in the browser, no addons or installations necessary.

Can you run the Microsoft "Remote Desktop Connection" program. Just type it in the start search bar. Then you could use your home PC to access the web.

Air Force just blocked GAF.

I was fucking heated.
Yep. I've already pulled two 12-hour shifts since the blocking and it has damn near killed me. I would be bored out-of-my-mind by half-way into the shift even with GAF (constantly refreshing the same threads to see if there were new posts, I was unable to log in from work so no posting), without it is fucking terrible.

Looks like they hit reddit as well. I never really went to reddit and most of the gaming sub-reddits were already blocked, but now I need alternative sites and that one is a no-go. Cracked will probably be next.

Last night I went in and pulled up Facebook, Cracked, Amazon, and SlickDeals. I finished everything I needed to do on FB and read the newest Cracked articles fairly quickly. That left about 11.5 hours for me to sit there refreshing SlickDeals and the Politics and Gaming forums on Amazon over and over and over...
Oh yeah, I also refresh my shopping cart on Amazon about once every couple hours to see if there were any price changes on stuff I want, so that is probably going to increase to once every 15 minutes.

EDIT: On the plus side, I'll be able to get a lot more books in. So that is good.

I would just quit.

A pretty simple, yet shitty, solution would be to remote into your computer at home and browse on that. Depending on your connection it could be decent or really awful.

This. A billion trillion times this
Not an option for everyone. No cell phones allowed in my building. And even if I could take one in and have it out at my desk, I barely get good reception back home. The nearest possible cell towers and stuff would probably be in Nuuk, the only real city in this country, and that is 900 miles away.

For me, GAF has been blocked since friday after over one year at my job. I'm surprised others have the same trouble, i thought someone at my job noticed an unusual high frequency of visits to GAF and decided to block it. Looks like its something else. :p

Ps: typing on a phone sucks.

if you google translate the whole website to english from english.... does that work?

It's blocked where I work now too!!! I was able to use it for years and just this morning the site is blocked? What happened ? What a weird coincidence !!

I use my phone. I love mobile GAF. My work blocked it and almost anything else related to video games. Fuck them.

Feels good being a Systems admin. I can surf whatever I want while blocking other peoples access. Orders come from the top though.

Arrived this morning after reading the thread and sure enough , blocked at work...

Fun while it lasted and at least there are smartphones...

Same here. Apparently, we do the same things.

I knew its days were numbered. I'm slated to pull a 16-hour shift on Christmas Eve and then again on Christmas, and while I wasn't ever able to log in to GAF, at least I could lurk. Add in "secure area," which means no cell phones or thoughts of tethering, and I'm trying to scour what's left unscathed. It's like this is a very special holiday Fuck You from wherever they've outsourced Internet content management.

I don't understand companies that block Internet traffic. It's rare that anyone has 8 straight hours of work to do every day and if you don't let them do what they want to do during their downtime, they're just going to resent working for you.

Somehow I'd bet that they haven't blocked sites like ESPN.

You can pick on the vidya game players but block sports scores and watch the office turn into a full scale riot.

Yeah. We don't block anything at work that isn't a security issue. If someone isn't doing their job, the solution isn't to block whatever website they're wasting time on. It's usually a process to address their non-productivity that if isn't corrected ends in their termination.

I have been doing this for years, even in private military companies.

First Option: Install LogMeIn in a computer at home, and then use logmein.com in your work PC Browser to remote access your PC at home from Work PC, works incredibly well an its free.

If you have access to Logmein.com then you are good to go.

Depending on your position, and if somehow they find out how many hits/time/data has been spent on the logmein URL, just tell them you were having a bunch of meetings with Join.me, which is owned by logmein and uses the same kind of URL.

Second option (EXTREME): If you are completely paranoid and dont want to use your work network AT ALL...

The idea of this method is to use your cell phone as your internet connection, in Windows you can have more than 1 network connected to a computer.

Use "forceBindIp" google it... to force a PortableFirefox to connect using the IP of your Cell Phone.

Needless to say, you need to make sure you have a good cell data plan, and also this wont work unless your PC connects to your Works network using an Ethernet cable.

*------------------------

The above cases are extreme, usually you will be fine with whats below:

These are my essential settings/plug ins for wasting time at work

Above all, get FirefoxPortable, dont use the normal Firefox, make sure to install firefox portable to a Flash Drive, if they dont allow Flashdrives at work then make sure you install it in a weird System folder. You will need to tweak a small file to get it to run alongside normal firefox, google it.

TrayOnMinimize (hides FirefoxPortable to the tray area in windows when you minimize)
AutoHotKey (map an extra key on your mouse and TAB on your keyboard to minimize FirefoxPortable, works great when someone comes close to your computer and you need to hide it while keeping eye contact)
ImageShowHide
Foxyproxy

Also make absolutely certain to set up firefox portable to delete all your personal data everytime you close firefox, this will work great if they fire you for wasting time at work.
http://www.howtogeek.com/137681/how-to-automatically-clear-private-data-when-you-close-your-browser/

Usually they will fire you as a surprise and wont let you touch any of the computer equipment after you have been fired, so make sure you close FirefoxPortable every time you get called to your HR, Boss office or pretty much every time you leave your computer.

Have fun being paranoid, completely worth it to get through those days when you just cant work.
