I don't even think there are any speces native to Japan, or anything similar contained in any zodiac or whatnot. Maybe that's why.
I think part of why some people find furries unsettling is because of the whole anthro thing. It still resembles the human form enough to be attractive to most people and this thought actually scares people who are in denial of that fact to the point where they will openly dismiss the art or the fandom/lifestyle so as to distance themselves from it and give them peace of mind. See also: homophobia. Although not all furries are gay it is just an example.
But really, humans have an instinct to be attracted to the human form, and anthros still have basic human body parts, so naturally people will still be attracted to one degree or another to the appearance. I think it is only when it starts to get bizarre and way too bestial (multiple nipples, backwards legs, etc) that it really starts to bother people. The phenomenon is kind of similar to the simple act of drawing a couple of symbols or letters or shapes that resemble the female form and are seen as attractive, or how certain cars are seen as "sexy" because they have sleek curved shapes resembling the torso of a woman (see Porsche))
furry fandom is just a way of applying this with animal forms. Its really not all that unexpected.

Years ago I was just hanging out in some IRC magic the gathering channels and someone told me about this "game". He made it sound pretty cool, so I downloaded the game and made a character. Visual Kei is kind of cool, but it can obviously get very messy and be an eyesore to look at.. like some of the messes of feral furries I don't like. >_> Colours and frills and accessories everywhere trying so hard to be unique but ultimately hurting my brain! It's too easy to go overboard.
Anyway, I really liked Arphalia as a furry artist back in the day too.
She had a whole gothic/iconic aesthetic going on that was interesting to look at, plus she really knew how to shade with pencil crayon in a pleasing way:
