PS3Good god what happened in the PS3 era
They already did:The fiscal year of Concord and they broke profit records.
Maybe MS needs to release 3 Concords per year!
I'd mention instead Starfail and Redfail. I think Indy may sell decently (not great) in PS5.They already did:
Indy
Avowed
South of Midnight
Back to back.
He broke a lot of records both when leading SCEE and when SIE CEO, plus left the company in a multi-year growth in most fronts, in most of which already were in all time records.Jim Ryan the GOAT
Those profit gains far exceed the rate of inflation. The fiscal year of Concord and they broke profit records.

There's something called inflation: game prices are cheaper to buy than ever while they are more expensive to make than ever. So since can't boost units sold they have to raise prices to compensate it.
Nvidia overcharging? No way... Never!Bluray drive cost $250 and sony forced them to include it in each playstation.
also, nvidia overcharged them for the rsx, and the cell was very expensive to produce early on.
There were reports that the $599 console actually cost $800 produce.
It's interesting how inflation was never an issue in the videogame industry until the past few years. Just like this is the first gen where consoles don't have price drops because "muh chips" and the price of services keep rising while the quality decrease. There's something called inflation: game prices are cheaper to buy than ever while they are more expensive to make than ever. from a gamer perspective anyway.
The BOM of the PS3 was about 900$. Add to that distribution and marketing.Good god what happened in the PS3 era
Did you quit gaming?I sold the PS5 back in 2023 and don't miss it, at all.
I think everyone be 'dee lulu'
Seems like it, Only the Sony gets talked about nowadays.Did you quit gaming?
Folks were expecting a sudden $100+ million hole to appear in some quarterly report. When in reality a loss like that would have already been incurred gradually over years.Funny.
Going by Gaf, it almost seemed like Concord was going to bankrupt Sony.
Odd how that works. And people are oh-so quick to defend it. They'll raise prices to make sure next year is also their most profitable. And the next year. And so on.Most profitable year ever and they still are increasing the price of their services and games.

Yes, the inflation has been huge in recent years and wasn't that big before at all. It's interesting how inflation was never an issue in the videogame industry until the past few years. Just like this is the first gen where consoles don't have price drops because "muh chips" and the price of services keep rising while the quality decrease.
According to a handful Sony statistics shared or leaked and surveys even from PS3 the #1 reason has been games included in all of them. Please notice: even before the merge with PS Now.Most people subscribe to PS Plus to play online and use cloud saves.
Record profits… record price rises, record game prices… dam you think Sony would just eat that cost as they're making so much money like a good billion dollar corporation… hopefully there's been no layoffs, oh wait![]()
Wouldn't be a topic without the customary SonyToo from the Xfans.Oh wait.....what? Did they announce layoffs?

Tbf the bluray thing was the right call in the long run. It helped dethrone HD-DVD as the de facto physical media format going forward. It cost them a lot during the PS3 era, but I'm sure they more than recouped that from bluray sales since then.Bluray drive cost $250 and sony forced them to include it in each playstation.
also, nvidia overcharged them for the rsx, and the cell was very expensive to produce early on.
There were reports that the $599 console actually cost $800 produce.
Because they thought that the money was in Bluray winning the format war. They won that war but it turned out there was no money in it.Damn, why even sell a 60GB model at that point if it weren't a measure to mitigate costs on the lower capacity PS3, but actually a further loss of cash.
Suicidal corporate behavior.
i dont care how much money Sony lost, i only care for how many games they made and ps3 killed in that aspect, it was were most of PS franchises were born and their studios became masters of gaming.Their "best generation ever" according to some here.
Anyone wondering why Sony doesn't go with anything exotic in their consoles- PS3 is why.Bluray drive cost $250 and sony forced them to include it in each playstation.
also, nvidia overcharged them for the rsx, and the cell was very expensive to produce early on.

100% Agreed. I understand, and am even empathetic to, the need for a business to make money. Developers should be paid for their incredible work, and if a development house goes out of business then they're not around to make great games for me to enjoy. But, the profit motive always sat behind a veneer of creativity where buying a game always felt like a fair transaction to access something potentially amazing. I'd give them my money and they'd give me a full and complete game to cherish. Today, the creative veneer is gone and companies like Microsoft and Sony aren't even trying to hide their greed. Buying a game is beginning to feel like going to a new mechanic for the first time - you're left wondering "how are you ripping me off today?".Stockholders > gamers. Used to feel like gamers were higher in the pecking order...

PlayStation did have layoffs within the past year I believe. Or maybe it was within last 2 years.
Pretty sure it was Nintendo that just raised their game prices. And MS that just massively increased their console price, as well as 3% layoffs. But go off.Record profits… record price rises, record game prices… dam you think Sony would just eat that cost as they're making so much money like a good billion dollar corporation… hopefully there's been no layoffs, oh wait![]()
In terms of new IPs that went on to release sequels (or remakes) on future platforms? Not true, it doesn't beat PS1 and PS2.i dont care how much money Sony lost, i only care for how many games they made and ps3 killed in that aspect, it was were most of PS franchises were born
Santa Monica Studio (God of War), Naughty Dog (Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy), Japan Studio (Shadow of the Colossus) and Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo 1/2/3/4) were already having critical acclaim before the PS3 generation started.and their studios became masters of gaming.
Since when is that the be-all metric? By that logic, the NES was the greatest console ever and every other Nintendo console was garbage. In terms of new IPs that went on to release sequels (or remakes) on future platforms? Not true, it doesn't beat PS1 and PS2.
MS is the one who announced layoffs, not Sony.Oh wait.....what? Did they announce layoffs?
Also Last Guardian, Knack, Days Gone, and Bloodborne.PS4:
Astro Bot
Helldivers
Until Dawn
Horizon
Ghost of Tsushima
Who's saying that's the be-all metric?Since when is that the be-all metric? By that logic, the NES was the greatest console ever and every other Nintendo console was garbage.
I wouldn't consider them franchises (yet). Also Last Guardian, Knack, Days Gone, and Bloodborne.
It's just a stupid article.Damn, why even sell a 60GB model at that point if it weren't a measure to mitigate costs on the lower capacity PS3, but actually a further loss of cash.

B.....bu.....but Sony is doomed, haven't you heard? And next year even better, and the next GTAVI... but well, for Mochizuki they are "disappointing" results xDD![]()

Product with too much ambition, too bad. I mean it's fantastic to have a PS1/PS2/PS3 ducktaped together with a CD/DVD/Blu Ray player, but people don't really want all of thatSony lost $300-$540 on every PS3 sold

Sony loses cash on each PS3 sold
Sony will lose over $300 on each 20GB PS3 sold, "And a further US$ 240 on high-end 60GB unit," according to research.www.theguardian.com
