Most Overrated game of the year, 2024 edition

I mean. Come on. It’s obviously Astro Bot. Sony made a solid platformer with tight gameplay and their fans who have to pretend that they like ‘deep narratives’, over the shoulder, walking, talking, press square to inspect gameplay have gone absolutely wild for it.

That being said, it’s still a 9/10. Just not ‘9.4/10 best game eva!’ like our Sony bros would have us believe.

“It’s a 9, just not 9.4” is the most splitting of cunt hairs I’ve seen on here lmao

I think Astro Bot is deserving of most of the praise it's getting, so it's not that overrated. I'm giving it a 9, so close enough I guess. It's great, but a bit too simple sometimes and I'm not into the funko pops. Still deserves most of the praise. Most everything else in the front spot at the Game Awards I think is overrated. Felt the same last year as well. I haven't played all of it though, so it's not a hill I'll die on this year.

Hellblade 2 I think is rated appropriately around 81. I liked it a lot more than that, but it's a fair average since it's an incredibly divisive game.

Even though I liked the game for what it was, this is the only correct answer.

It literally got shutdown after 2 weeks, everybody got refunded and the studio got closed. And it was their very first release.
But it was never well-rated, so how can it be overrated? More like properly rated.

Lol yeah, I was thinking biggest flop rather than overrated.

Ehh I'll still go with Concord, as I haven't played any game this year that I consider overrated.

I like Balatro but I'm not grabbed the same way so many others are. It's well-designed but I need more level design, story, action, or personality in my roguelites for them to really click with me.

Hat to be Astro Bot, using the literal definition of overrated. Overrated doesn’t necessarily mean bad, but some of the frothing over it was ridiculous. Feel like it’s already been forgotten.

I’d say Hellblade (didn’t like either of them) but it wasn’t rated that highly anyway. I noped out after about ten minutes.

WWE 2K24. Its pretty solid but its also more of the same, same formula and gameplay. The online portion is also garbage, and 2K tends to remove the servers very quickly, so I am thinking to stop supporting the franchise moving forward.

I haven't finished the game yet, so maybe I'll backtrack on lots of this, but I find Persona 3 Reload very overrated so far and I'm baffled that it seems to have near-universal acclaim from players and reviewers alike.

Its management sim component has mechanics so obfuscated that you can screw up through no fault of your own if you don't constantly reload (lol) to find out what each action/conversation option actually does, or use a guide. Its visual novel scenes happen constantly (except in Tartarus where they're sorely needed) but seem to dole out plot or character development at a snail's pace. Its graphics are weak but inexplicably have framedrops (great portraits though). Tartarus has boring combat, no exploration to speak of, and could be condensed to a tenth of its length without losing anything.

you writing everyone who said Metaphor.

please write death by snusnu next to my name

Silent Hill 2 Remake. It’s a good (serviceable) game that never reaches the heights and artistic beauty of the original that constantly gets the overused “masterpiece” label thrown.

FF7 Rebirth.

Bloated mess with bad storytelling. The more you play, the more it becomes obvious most of the reviews were written just after playing the first couple of hours of the game.

Feel like the people mad about the girth of Rebirth are Trophy Whores upset about the length and difficulty of obtaining the Plat.

From the stuff I actually played:
Probably Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
I liked it but I think it's closer to an 8/10 than the 89 it has on metacritic. The new setting is fun, the new party members are great and they vastly improved the combat, but I also think it has one of the weakest main stories in the franchise, some annoying pacing issues and much of the side content was pretty forgettable.
Good point on Infinite Wealth. It just doesn’t hit the same notes as the first game.

I also found Hawaii setting to be kind of meh, since it’s just too spread out and it becomes boring over the course of the game.

I really hope they don’t plan to spend next several games there, beyond the pirate game already announced.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is easily the most overrated by a country mile. The game is genuinely bad and deserves nothing more than a 3/10 at best because of how criminally awful the writing/tone is. Critics were smoking copium on this one.

My main gripe about Infinite Wealth, without getting too much into spoilers, is... I thought Yakuza 6 was a good sendoff for Kiryu. They should have left it at that. The "walk down the memory lane" was just too much.

And I had just previously played through most of the Yakuza series, so it wasn't like I was going "whodat?" Rather, "whydat?"

Kiryu is just too popular, lol. They had to even make Gaiden game to explain what the hell Kiryu is doing there.

All new Yakuza after part 6 are very average games. They actually took a serious game that raised very serious and adult topics (yes, there was humor, but it just diluted the plot), and turned the series into a complete circus that is impossible to take seriously, and if we are being completely honest, all they are doing now is just milking the brand like a cow =)

I kinda get that - at the same time, if you're going to introduce a new protagonist, the studio should let him stand on his own (the Kiryu/Majima/Saejima cameos in Like a Dragon were completely unnecessary IMHO, and didn't make any sense if you gave it any thought). But I guess it's more commercially viable to play it safe.

I paid £50 for MEtaphor. Now I feel sad. I was planning to start it next :(

I'm a little surprised by how many shouts it's getting in the thread.

Atlus games usually fill that perfect niche of not being mainstream enough to appeal to the normies who are far more critical of their games, but still being popular enough with Atlus and turn-based fans that they get lavishly praised, regardless of the quality of their output.

It is a good game, a mix of SMT and Persona in a fantasy setting. Is it best JRPG ever? No, but it’s very solid.

It's Yakuza, if they made a new map they are going to milk the shit out of it lol.
Personally I liked Hawaii, I think it offered a nice change of scenery for the franchise, and the Hawaii themed jobs were fun.
But the overall story wasn't that engaging, the 2 main villains were very forgettable, most of the twist you could see coming a mile away and I found the whole Kiryu side of the plot (specially around the middle part) kinda tedious and unnecessary.

All that said I still enjoyed the game, still played for like 60 hours and had fun with it. But after the reviews I was expecting more.

I for one am glad to see some push back to the Atlus formula.
Always felt like I was missing something when everyone kept saying Persona 5 is one of the greatest JRPG's ever and I found it pretty mid.
Didn't play Royal though, but I didn't like the original release nearly enough to not only buy it again but spending another 100 hours on it.

I feel like it would disingenuous for me to comment on games that I haven't played, so I'll stick to personal experiences.

While this game isn't actually released, after a nine months wait on a list for early access, I finally got to experience "Orion Drift" on Meta Quest. This was supposed to be the spiritual successor to "Echo Arena", which was the best competitive VR game ever made (this game was shut down around a year ago). If you were just going off of the conversations in the discord, Orion Drift is the second coming of Christ.

The day I got access, I made sure that the kids went to bed a little earlier than usual. I cleared out my kitchen to make the most of the room I have, and fired it up. Instead of zero g action based on the training arena in "Ender's Game", what we really got was "Gorilla Tag" mashed with "Rocket League". What made it worse, was the fact that this is being developed by the "Gorilla Tag" dev team. This means that 94% of every lobby was composed of mouth breathing pre-teens.

Admittedly, I should have seen it coming, but wishful thinking won the day.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Nah I didn't even try for Platinum, it felt like a legit bloat--fest even before reaching Cosmo Canyon. Great first few chapters but it dragged on in the second half.

From what I’ve played, Astro Bot. It’s a solid platformer, but way too simple and relies too much on member berries.

Balatro is amazing and very deep. OP smoking crack.

Indy could take it by end of the year.

I would say Metaphor, even if I like the game.

But the ratings it got are crazy. It's still very classical and story and setting are less interesting than I initially thought

I obviously love Balatro so i disagree but thats fine. What I dont get is, why are people talking now so much about it and making it sound overrated when honestly, I tried it for free and got hooked. I never ever thought theres this massive follwing or whatever in order for it to be called overrated. If it got good reviews, they are justified, I mean the game is crack just like vampire survivors but unlike Vamp, i can put down Balatro for 10 days and go back right in. With VS I felt like once I achieved that top level and dropped it, the feeling fizzled out. Also Balatro is easy to multitask with. I usually play it while watching a podcast on YT as it doesnt require constant concentration, that is until you decide to continue forward.

But no, I dont think it should be GOTY, as much as I love it its still a 75mb indie card game, comon lets be real here.

I do actually think Persona 5 Royal is one of the best JRPG's of all time. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

However, it was my first Atlus game and everything felt so refined and fresh from the combat system, to the UI, to the art direction and the OST.

Metaphor was missing that wow factor for me, and seemed a little formulaic but perhaps it's partly because I'm now accustomed to the systems that Atlus use in just about every single one of their games.

Flashless at the Golden Globes
Astro bot: It's a good game, but its still basically that packin game with more levels. If we want to give these games a 94 then we need to reevaluate our life choices.

FF7 Rebirth: Mini game simulator. Literally retarded characters. Everyone shits on Veilguard's characters but at least 99% of them were normal. Here, 99% of the people act like they are 5 year old. the open world levels are literally the worst of ubisoft. In fact, it would be insulting to compare them to ubisoft because ubisoft figured this out back in 2009. Combat is the only good thing about the game.

Dragon's Dogma 2: It's the Starfield of this year. I dont think ive played a game where so many different systems all come together to make one of the most boring and flawed games ever. Hunting monsters and dragons with this combat system should not be this boring.

Havent played Balataro or Metaphor but im sure they are overrated too. Just like every single game this gen. Rewarding card games with Goty is just insulting to real games like Space Marine 2 and Silent hill 2.
