Most Overrated game of the year, 2024 edition

Hold it up against any 3D platformer of this generation, the past decade, or even since Mario 64. It’s one of the best ever in the genre. It doesn’t innovate in the way that Galaxy or 64 did. It’s just really well made and has a level of polish that Yooka Laylee, A Hat in Time, Lucky’s Tale, etc do not. It’s as close to a Nintendo platformer from another company that I can remember.
This guy is right you know ☝️ I laugh at the Astrobot mentions, it's not like it's literally one of the best 3D Platformers ever made in the genre, to the point that you literally can only bring up Mario himself or the N64 Banjo Kazooie to actually compare to its quality. Meanwhile Wukong was literally boosted as some second coming of christ action game, with so many flaws in its actual design like bad world map design (literally more linear and limited than the world let's you believe) invisible walls, strange hit detection at times etc. Every other Action game would've been crucified for these flaws but oh let's use this average action that basically copied any action game/souls like/ninja gaiden/gow like traits without improving on them or making them unique, as political tool for the "Woke" crowd, instead of judging the merrits on pure gameplay design etc= good not great action with cool graphics 😐

Stellar Blade would also be one of my pick. The Electric Underground made a great video about it.

I could also say Indiana Jones, Astro Bot and i also suspect Metaphor.

Tend to agree. I rated Indy fairly high, in the 8's I believe, but I think in retrospect it is more like a seven to me as well. This is partially due to the fact that I had a heck of a lot more fun playing Avowed and I rated it an eight. Avowed actually got stronger as a game to me as the game went on whereas Indy got weaker. If the other sections of the game were as good as the Vatican area then I'd probably think different. That and third person would have simply made the game more fun.

Damn that sucks

Maybe I shouldn't buy Indy when it comes out on PS5

Wukong. Had a "been there done that" wibe. And you're not even playing Son Wukong but his distant cousin Pedro.

I don’t care for Odyssey much either.

Fair enough. AstroBot is the best platformer since Galaxy 1 to me. So I don't think it's overrated, personally. They're exceedingly rare, the production values are insane in AstroBot (even well above the Mario series in that regard). Maybe it's not as replayable, which is the only real fault I give it. But it's a magical first playthrough.

Gotta be Space Marine to me. It's fine, but incredibly basic.

WH fans treat 6/10 games like they're the second coming of Christ (or the god emperor)

Nah.

Mario Odyssey is brilliant. Movement is perfect.

That's about the only thing that's great about it. Everything else is mid - level design, art, music, bosses. Just meh. Seriously felt like it was lacking the nintendo magic.

A platformer can't live and die by its controls alone

Thinking back on the year I think I only Gushed on Astrobot. Perhaps I rated it too high. But I did enjoy my time with it. It's a good game but I'm not sure it's one I want to replay anytime soon.

Metaphor:ReFantazio for me. Personas 3-5 are some of my all-time favorite games, but the setting and story of M:R did not draw me in at all. With time removed and as a knee-jerk "out of 10", I give it a 6.

Silent Hill 2. It's just not a fun game to play at all. If it was a new IP, without the nostalgia for the series, it would have reviewed in the high 70's
My bad. I helped "overrate" SH2, because I think it's one of the best horror games ever made. Loved it.

Don't give up on it yet. It's a unique, well-made game even without the Indy name attached. Then, if you're already an Indy fan, you could probably add a point to your review score because it's the best media in that franchise since The Last Crusade.
