Following the month long Python removal competition designed to remove as many of the snakes from the (area) as possible, there still remains an inordinate amount of pythons. Researchers who have been tracking pythons captured more than one ton over the last three months.

Among the 43 pythons removed researchers found the largest male python ever documented in (G/A/F), measuring 16 feet and weighing more than 140 pounds.

That's FL all right. The pythons are eating all our gators :( I'd rather be eaten by a dinosaur than be hugged to death by an fn snake.

Why anyone would want a pet snake is beyond me.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I LOVE snakes. I took care of a beautiful Burmese python because her owner was a pussy and was terrified of her once she started growing/eating chickens. One day I went over to feed her, only to find out he dumped her in the glades, like every other idiot..I'd have gladly taken her.
I can't believe pet owners just abandoned their snakes to the wild to create this mess.
It's ridiculous..

To share a treat with, of course.

Most people don't realize all the responsibilities it takes to own a pet. It's no different than the people that just dump their dog or cat somewhere because they don't want it anymore. Happens a lot with dogs. Oh look at the cute puppy! And once it gets older they just dump it, like a piece of trash.

I was sooo pissed out of my mind when I found out. Again, idiot knew I would take her in a heartbeat. Guess he just felt some kinda way about it, and would rather toss her..she was 10ft by that point.

For once Australia wasn't the target of a snake thread on Gaf. I'm proud.

Yeah I heard on a podcast that the issue of pet gators and pythons in the Everglades has hit pest epidemic levels. Crazy.

Another easy G/A/F considering Florida is the only option where these things exist (albeit as an invasive species).

I don't know, bruh. These things are pretty invasive, as in they're everywhere out here on acreage properties, but not plague levels like what the Florida Everglades are experiencing.

You get pythons in australia. Some of which have been known to eat saltwater crocodiles.

I had thought the largest python in Australia was the carpet python which would never get up to 140 lbs and 16 feet. When I hear that size I instantly think of Burmese or larger, which are all in Asia/Africa/America (as an invasive species).

Let's actually think about this. One will suffocate you before eating you. The other will horribly tear you limb from limb.

Both of those suck but I'll take being unconscious when I get eaten ovwr having chunks torn off while still alive.

Oh, right.

Yeah, the weight is off, but scrub pythons can get near 7-8m long. Usually weigh much less that that though.

By tagging "snitch snakes" with radio trackers, researchers hope to study where the pythons are living in order to catch other snakes. Fifteen adult pythons are currently being surveyed by radio tags so scientists can learn more about the ecological implications of the invasive species.
