GA interview with uematsu online

Good interview, Thanks

GA: How does this new set of hardware change how you approach music development?;
NU: [Uematsu describes the rumors he’s heard about the upcoming hardware] It’s a game machine where you can record live directly into the machine instead of digitizing it. I can live record the music, that’s the difference. It’s going to be a challenge for me. It’s something that I’m excited to do.

I wonder if he's referring to the storage medium (blu-ray|Hd-dvd) of next-gen or actual 5.1 surround sound during gameplay. (not cut-scenes)

It's also good to know that he'll still contribute something to future FF titles.

GA: Well it's part of my job to keep up on that stuff, and I'm a big fan, personally.
NU: When you talk about the Final Fantasy series, the series started selling better after 7, and that was the base idea for the center of the set list for the LA concert.
BUT BUT I THOUGHT SONY KILLED FINAL FANTASIE!1

the translator was having trouble describing what uematsu was trying to say. the pr person was pretty confused, too, so i tried my best to clean/clear up the translation.

That is some awesome translation, and by awesome I mean crap. You know, it IS okay as a writer to take some liberties, for example, changing
So tomorrow is the first day of the tour, so we have to wait for the reaction to come.
to English.

GA: Have you ever been approached to compose for an American-made video game? If not, would you be interested?

NU: If somebody approaches me, I will consider it. However, I feel I’m getting old and I have to carefully select what I do, especially because there are a lot of different games. There are a lot of violent games, such as a game where you shoot people, and I feel strongly against it, especially when I think about kids playing it. I want to give the very positive. I have to be careful what kind of music and what kind of project I get involved in.

Respect +1000

The kids like it when there's a little bit of Japanese-English still in there, like "Please look forward to our next work!", but fixing stuff like "I want to give the very positive" is not only acceptable, it's downright necessary.

Another example: nobody at Squeenix would bat an eye if you changed

"I didn't make any particular request, in terms of what orchestra to use. However, Mr. Arnie Roth [the conductor for the performance] had the high recommendation for the pops orchestra, and that's why."

to

"I didn't request any particular orchestra. We chose the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra because [conductor] Arnie Roth recommended them highly."

Just curious -- who was the interpreter? Most game industry interpreters are total shite these days. It's a shame Kyoko left Squeenix, cause she's one of the best I've ever seen.

It would seem as if, at a loss for what to do following Exodus, they recruited someone from within whose job description does not really cover interpretation.

I can't recall his last name now, but it was a guy called Ami, whose retainer/clear braces I couldn't stop staring at every time he gave me an answer. Super nice guy, though, as was everyone from Squeenix.
