"Yes" is the only acceptable answer.

Mitsuda did a string of GOAT OSTs in his early days, but after Xenosaga I he never composed another full OST on the same scale. Chrono Trigger + Chrono Cross + Xenogears is a perfect trifecta and I'll listen to those forever.

Still, Uematsu is a pillar of game music. His work on Final Fantasy is nothing short of legendary. What he squeezed out of the SNES is almost unbelievable. And he's done a lot more complete soundtracks than Mitsuda, by far, all of consistent quality.

Absolutely no reason to run. Sugiyama is bar none of the best composers of all time. Dragon Warrior / Quest has one of the most unique and memorable soundtracks of all time and its all thanks to Koichi Sugiyama. I was playing DQXIS on Switch 2 this week and the music just gave me those happy vibes. He and his work will be missed.

As for the topic at hand this one is very hard to answers. I may lean move towards Mitsuda since I don't really follow or play the games Uematsu has been working on in recent years but to neglect his work that I grew up with would be a travesty. The Xenoblade series is the most recent game I play with Mitsuda contribution in it.

I'm a filthy casual when it comes to their bodies of work, but what I have heard of either just hits differently, as the kids say.

I wil respect either option winning but will understand a draw.

It is easy . Uematsu . He has larger amount of solo work . While his music isnt as good as he used to be , he still try .

Mitsuda pretty much retired after Xenosaga 1 , he barely composed anything from 2005 to 2015 . Most of his work right now are collaborated with other composer . Mitsuda Xenoblade work is good but they are not nessesasry because Xenblade real star are Manami Kyota , Kenji Hiramatsu and ACE . In fact , i wish he wont return to Xenoblade series agaisnt because they keep reduce amount of Manami Kyota and give her less important compotision (Go from 65% of music in XC1 to 15 % in XC3 ) just so Mitsuda can composed the important track . She has way more distinct music style than Mitsuda

No reason to run. Dude has made his mark with his music. DQ wouldn't have been the same without him.
You can like the work of an artist without having to like the artist himself. Imagine not liking H. P. Lovecraft's stories just because he was a racist (in his earlier years, at least). Or what about Charles Dickens? Dude cheated on his wife and tried to send her to an asylum to get rid of her. Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol are still amazing stories.

Uematsu is the GOAT, but I'm really looking forward to what Yasunori Nishiki will come up with in the future.

Don't have a favorite but I've voted Mitsuda, even if just because Chrono Trigger is easily top 3 videogame music.
Uematsu composed several Chrono Trigger tracks, btw:

With that said, Mitsuda is indeed responsible for the most iconic tracks and what people generally think of as "the Chrono Trigger sound". Though I personally prefer Chrono Cross.

Still, I have to give it to Uematsu. Mitsuda is very "pretty" and rhythmic, but tends to surprise me less than Nobuo. I find Nobuo has a greater versatility and coherency when it comes to a full soundtrack and is a master storyteller. And nothing from Mitsuda has blown me away like the FF7 Main Theme, One Winged Angel or Liberi Fatali.
