Thinks his PR is better than yours.
How are the 16x for sound? I've got a 12x and it's so quiet when it burns, I hear the 16x are super loud.

Yeah, it's pretty loud.

Not as loud as my Lite-On LTR-5237S CD burner, though. That thing sounds like a jet.
The Pioneer is still pretty loud at any speed.
NEC make the quietest drives. They also have the most, how should I say it, "flexible" firmware updates. It's so easy to hack according to the DVD burning community.

I've got a Plextor PX-712A. Not the fastest, and it doesn't do dual layers, but dual layer media is too expensive anyway.

Dual layer is slowly but surely coming down in price.

Who would think you could get a 50 pack of Taiyo Yuden media (16X I might add) for $35 USD.

So what's the last thing each of you burned on these bad boys? I have to replace my CD burner which gave out. Cheap shitty one anyway. Pretty cheap to replace these days though with a good quality one probably cheaper than this one. But I may go for a dvd burner, if I know I'm gonna use it.

NEC 3520 Silver 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache IDE DVD Burner.

I've only used stock firmware and burned a few data disks so far, but it's done the job nicely.

I have an NEC 3520A and a LiteOn 1653S(flashed from a 1213S). Both are 16x, but I use the NEC for burning mainly and the LiteOn for PI/PIF scanning + reading(LiteOn makes awesome readers).

There's a hacked firmware that allows you to use your NEC 3520A to read PI/PIF errors(there are also versions for 3500A and 3540A).

If you have LiteOn 1213S/1233S(or rebadge drives based on them like Sony's 12x/16x drives), you can flashed it to 1613S/1633S/1653S for significantly improved writing and faster burns.

I use the Lite-On DVD-RW SOHW 1673S DVD burner. Works great, not noticeably loud if it isn't quiet, and it handles all kinds of media. Plus, being Lite-On you can count on firmware revisions should a brand of media come out that the drives have trouble with.

Only cost $50 too from newegg. Got it about 3-4 months ago. :D

EDIT: just checked. There's a newer firmware version out than the one I have. w00t!

Mine's a 4X LG drive. Got really solid reviews, but some of the "super technical" reviews suggested it had issues on certain areas of discs it outputs...

All in all, I've been very happy with it. Haven't noticed any issues in burns that weren't related to crappy media. I'd say I felt bad about it not being dual-layer, but it seems like it might be a while befoer dual-layer media is at all affordable.

i have the NEC 3520A and using the modded 'full-speed' firmware for maximum ripping/burning. it's loud as hell when ripping a movie, but playback noise can be controlled by using Nero's CD/DVD Speed tool to force the drive into a lower speed mode temporarily.

absolutely GREAT deal for the $50 i paid for it.

Screw HP, and screw lightscribe. It's not going to take off. Don't waste your money. Save it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152040 - $43, better than an HP burner could ever dream of being

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101632 - $37, I've been reading some great things about this burner as well

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106964 - $45. This is the company that makes Sony DVD burners.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827129161 - My burner.

I'd suggest all of these over some overpriced HP.
