GAF Games o' the Generation (DC/PS2/GBA/GC/Xbox/PC 2000-2005) Voting Closed

Generation six was amazing.

1. World of Warcraft; In my all-time top 5 based on time played and memories made
2. Metroid Prime; a VR version of this would be the most amazing thing ever, without vr it's pretty close
3. Final Fantasy X; I fell in love with the characters, my favorite JRPG of all time
4. Ratchet & Clank Going Commando; Imaginative, hilarious, bombastic. More games like this please.
5. Jet Set Radio Future; Jet Set Radioooooooooooo. We need a sequel.
6. ICO; A nearly flawless game, master class level design right up there with Dark Souls
7. Castlevania Aria of Sorrow; I love all the IGAvania's and this one is arguably the best of the bunch
8. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic; So good I finished it three times just to see what changed
9. Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures; Why can't more games be designed from the ground up for co-op?
10. Jet Grind Radio; My friend's son erased my VMU with my 100% JGR save. Still salty

I'll finish the other descriptions later.

1. Half-Life 2 ; Probably my 2nd all time favourite game, only surpassed by the first Half-Life. A masterpiece that evolved what the first one did right. it's mindblowing that is already 10 years old!.
2. Europa Universalis II ; You know what, I wasn't going to put it here, there's already EU4 out and it's wonderfull. But it's my most played game ever, so it has to be here.
3. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic ; Truth be told I played for a long time now and I need to replay it to really know if it's as good as I remeber it. But I loved it at the time.
4. Max Payne ; The sequel is also great, but the first one was so ahead of it's time and extremely FUN.
5. Mafia ; My favourite open world game ever. Replayed again last year and it aged like a fine wine, at least for me.
6. No One Lives Forever ; Such a great game that is being forgoten by all the legal crap it is involved. Very creative and a perfect blend of James Bond themes, fun gunplay and stealth sections.
7. Beyond Good & Evil ;
8. Silent Hill 2 ;
9. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ;
10. Rome: Total War ;

1. Silent Hill 2 ; The best horror game of all time, with one of the most mature and deep stories told in gaming. The game wasn't particularly scary to me, but the atmosphere was perfect, thanks to a combination of great design and a beautifully haunting score. The amount of thought and detail put into every aspect of this game is amazing. It's one of the best games ever made, and a game I replay almost every year.

wqQtf3.jpg

2. Resident Evil 4 ; A perfect mixture of action and horror, as well as a great example of amazing game design. Every part of this game feels polished. The game is filled with memorable moments and characters, as well as very nerve racking enemy encounters. I replay this game almost every year as well; it's a damn good game.

4H6yNK.jpg

3. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty ; Another great example of a well done and polished game. The story of this game had me captivated, though I had a hard time following it. It took a few playthroughs, but I finally have a good grasp on what happened. The gameplay was excellent, though the controls haven't aged well, and I always felt so accomplished when I managed to get through a room undetected.

c37cjd.jpg

4. Shadow of the Colossus ; Everything about this game is awe-inspiring -- from the beautiful, yet empty world you explore, to the Colossi you battle and the stunning score. This game blew me away, and even though the game had few words, the story was powerful and emotional, specifically at the end.

IX9pfN.jpg

5. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening ; Hands down one of the best action games of all time. Dante felt more complicated to play than in pervious installments with the introduction of styles, which was a good thing. It was fun to play around with different styles, and the many fights against Vergil were some of the best moments of the game. Overall, the game was very well paced and filled with memorable fights that offered a good challenge for the player.

6AkhG9.jpg

6. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater ; The one Metal Gear game I was able to make sense of story-wise without 5 playthroughs. This was the first game in the series to have a more open feel and involve sneaking in different outdoor terranes. The game introduced some very memorable characters, as well as had many memorable moments and fights. The ending fight in particular is probably one of the most memorable moments in the series.

Fcbdek.jpg

7. Kingdom Hearts II ; I've always felt this game is the best Kingdom Hearts game. I almost wanted to give this spot to KH1 since it started it all, but 2 overall was a better experience. The combat is great and a lot of cool mechanics were introduced (drive forms and reaction commands), plus the levels were very memorable. I enjoyed the story much more, even though it started get a little overly complicated.

GczVoF.jpg

8. Fatal Frame 2 ; This is one of the few games that has actually made me scared, so it ranks pretty high for that alone. This game had an amazing atmosphere that was combined with very intense fights with ghosts. The ritual the game was centered on was very creepy, and the more you progressed through the game and learned about the ritual and the village, the more uneasy things felt.

SvbY0T.jpg

9. Sly 2: Band of Thieves ; All the Sly games will always hold a special place in my heart; they're very nostalgic for me, and I have a lot of good memories playing them with my sister. Sly 2 is the best in the series, and one of the best games on the PS2. The story was simple yet intriguing, and had you traveling all across the globe to fight many memorable enemies. It also introduced the ability to control Bently and Murray as well as Sly, which added two new unique and different ways to play the game.

9lyurW.jpg

10. Psychonauts ; I remember when I first got this game, I became instantly obsessed with it. Everything about it was just so unique and magical to me as a kid. Even now, after all these years, I'm still charmed by it. The art style was amazing, and the game consisted of a memorable cast of characters. The gameplay was fun, and the levels were all memorable and special.

Honorable Mentions

x. Kingdom Hearts ; This probably is the first JRPG I ever played, and I still love it to this day. The story is simple but memorable, and exploring all the Disney worlds is a lot of fun. The combat is loads of fun, the characters are great, and the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard.

x. Final Fantasy XII ; This is my favorite Final Fantasy. The cast was great, the story and lore were very intriguing, and the world was massive and fun to explore. I also loved the more action based combat system compared to the usual turn based system.

x. SSX 3 ; I loved the openness of this game, and had a blast playing it. One of the best sports games I've ever played.

x. Tony Hawk's Underground ; Probably my favorite skateboarding game of all time. The story was surprisingly good for a game like this, and it was a lot of fun to play through. The soundtrack was also amazing.

x. Final Fantasy X ; One of the best Final Fantasy games set in a very memorable, awe-inspiring world. The soundtrack, cast, and gameplay were all spectacular. The ending was quite powerful in my opinion as well.

1. Final Fantasy XII ; I played this game in Japanese first but it was the English translation that completely bowled me over. Alexander O. Smith, Joseph Reeder, and company took a good story in an engaging world and made it into probably the most engaging experiences I've ever had in a video game. All their additions -- a Sanskrit/Hindi substratum language; naming conventions for the different tribes -- are easy to not notice, but taken together, they make Yasumi Matsuno's world shine.

Oh, and Hitoshi Sakimoto's soundtrack isn't half bad, either!

2. F-Zero GX ; So much fun. Gorgeous tracks, a great soundtrack, and a very deep game that just keeps rewarding you the longer you play it. Thirty pre-made machines, ten more to unlock, and then tens of thousands of combinations made from your custom parts. A bunch of great course themes, and then 40 additional pilot themes that you might not even notice. This game has so much, and still holds up well today.

3. Ico ; What a story. Never have I wanted to protect someone, and defeat that final boss, like I did in Ico. I bought a PS2 specifically to play this, and it didn't disappoint.

4. Wipeout Fusion ; The ignored cousin in the Wipeout family, and the only entry on the PS2. I liked it once I accepted how different it was from the original trilogy. The ships could have been a little 'floatier', and there were difficulty spikes, but the music and environments were just as good as what came before. Zone mode, introduced for the first time, was brutally hard and the three-dimensional-oscilloscope graphics hadn't yet appeared. I still play this from time to time.

5-7. F-Zero Maximum Velocity, Falcon Legend, and Climax ; Three solid portable entries in the F-Zero series which retain the classic SNES-era graphic style. Nice music, fun courses; Climax even had a rudimentary course editor. You can't go wrong with these.

Honorable Mention -- I haven't played them long enough to really cast a vote, but I love their OSTs in particular: Metroid Prime and Ace Combat 5. AC5's 'The Unsung War' might be my favorite foreign-language vocal track ever.

let me know if you're posting later or updating your 'reserved' spot.

none of your lists are eligible. please read the first post. for people using 'goat' as the only comment for any game, i'm going to need something a little more substantial than an acronym.

Updated my post with a comment for one of the games. (Pg. 10) Will post the rest of the comments later.

Let's try this out...

1. Metal Gear Solid 3 ; Probably the most memorable single player story based game throughout this particular generation. It improves on everything in the series and frames it all in what is largely a self-contained and extremely satisfying experience. Great gameplay options, great bosses, good cutscene direction, without a doubt the best Metal Gear game ever made.

2. Diablo 2 ; Great random dungeon design + online multiplayer + tons of loot + Blizzard polish = Time Sink of Death... until you hit the black wall of lag. :p

3. Ninja Gaiden Black ; Perfection in 3D character action games. It has not been matched to this day in terms of pure mechanics and combat satisfaction. So good.

4. Grand Theft Auto 3 ; This redefined what could be accomplished with a 3D open world action game. It was mindblowing when it was first released, and even today, it's hard not to be impressed with the ambition and execution - on a PS2 no less.

5. Half Life 2 ; Valve did a lot of cool stuff with this to expand far beyond the elements of player immersion and AI interaction from the first game. I loved the more open areas with the clear sky visible, and there was nice vertical design with rooftop battles which showed off the scale of the enemies well. Dog was such a great character.

6. Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne ; Taking SMT into full third person 3D, revamping the battle system into something really fast and yet tactical, and some of the best art direction in any JRPG. Mmmm.

7. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory ; This is probably my favorite multiplayer shooter throughout the generation here. I didn't play it as much as Counterstrike because it needed a lot more players to work, making it less suitable for LAN, but the design is fantastic. I'm a huge fan of mission based objectives rather than pure leaderboard driven multiplayer, and while there weren't a ton of maps, each was really fun to play.

8. Counterstrike ; The ultimate LAN game. Had so much fun with it, especially earlier on before everyone playing the game degenerated into picking nothing but de_dust over and over. I always had a great time with overnight LAN sessions, especially when we decided to grab a bunch of new maps to try them out. Even playing an awful map with a group of friends can be fun, you get to learn never to try that map ever again!

9. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess ; My favorite 3D Zelda game. I love the scale and scope of the adventure, and how fun all the various tools and weapons were. It might be really ugly at times, especially compared to Wind Waker, but I just loved the tone the game was going for. The final boss battle was such a fun series of challenges and thematically satisfying.

10. Final Fantasy XII ; It's a fully realized 3D FF game set in a world created by Matsuno. That alone is something to be appreciated. While it might not have reached the full potential it could have, the grounded tone and seriousness in the depiction of the characters makes it one of the most unique FF titles. The Gambit system was also well thought out as a compliment to the MMO-style combat for a single player game. Using macros in RPGs is something more developers need to think about. It's something I've been fond of since Phantasy Star IV.

x. Resident Evil 4 ; Solid third person shooter, lots of fun design, and it clearly had a strong impact on all TPS games coming after it.

x. Mother 3 ; Great follow-up to the Earthbound series. Really wacky settings, characters, and scenarios, but yet relatable because of a very conscious focus on realistic relationships and dynamics filled with heart.

x. Shadow Hearts: Covenant ; Devilman + Alternate History + Awesome Battle System. It might be a rather traditional RPG, and I think some of the dungeons are pretty iffy, and it's way too long overall, but it's definitely a memorable game.

x. Final Fantasy X-2 ; The best turn based battle system in FF ever. I'm disappointed that they never really managed to take this and expand on it in a truly evolutionary way. Having ATB combat mixed with actual timing in attacks, interrupts, cancels, etc is such a fantastic idea, especially with full party control and a nice range of job classes.

x. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter ; Oh, another JRPG with a great battle system. This is turning into "honorable mentions of JRPGs with great battle systems", lol. I love how the game was designed to be a huge tower dungeon, and there were various mechanics which are taken from rogue-likes and implemented into something else entirely. Oh and I love AP driven combat systems, which brings me to...

x. Valkyrie Profile 2 ; Yup, another "unique battle system" mention. Tactical positioning on the battlefield - check. AP cost for movement and attacks - check. Enemies with weak spots and destructible components - check. <3 <3 <3

x. Kingdom Hearts 2 ; I <3 Disney. I <3 Nomura. That's probably the only reason this is here!

1. Counter-strike 1.6; my favourite game of all time. Everything about this game is just perfect to me. I love the graphics, would still pick this style over something flashy any day. The gunplay is the best i have experienced, entirely skill based. The mechanics of the game are to my standards, no regen health or health recovery at all. Very simple but it works so well. The community itself was amazing and helped shape the game to how it is today. The thousands of fun and unique maps, the mods (warcraft, diablo anyone?) were great. Pity the aussie community died and moved to source/GO.

1. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door; Not many games can get 100+ hours out of me and still be super enjoyable, this game defined RPGs for me. While Super Paper Mario was a downer, I still love it and it's only a downer becuase of how high the bar was set with this game.
2. Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader; I have been constantly asking for a Rogue Squadron 4 and was very upset when the thread went up about the Wii port. This game means a lot to me in terms of Star Wars and gaming in general. When I hear people talking about the next Star Fox, I think more of Rogue Squadron than Star Fox 64
3.Psychonauts; This game just oozes with creativity and charm, while there were some certain bad parts *Cough*Meat Circus*Cough* the game is a fun collectathon platformer that makes me yearn for a sequel that we will never get.
4. Pikmin 2; Pikmin 1 was great, but Pikmin 2 improved upon almost all my complaints in Pikmin 1, Pikmin 2 gave a lot more content and was a step in the right direction. I bought my Wii U for Pikmin 3 because of this and Pikmin 1.
5. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
6. Silent Hill 2
7. Star Wars Battlefront 2
8. Metroid Prime
9. Super Smash bros Melee
10. Luigi's Mansion

Honorable Mention (Mostly played these on re-releases)
*Super Mario Sunshine
*Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
*Sly Cooper
*Resident Evil 4
*MGS3: Snake Eater
*Devil May Cry
*Jak and Daxter
*Ratchet and Clank

*Will add more comments in the future

1. Halo 2 ; My favorite Xbox Original game and my top game of the 6th gen. Campaign was fun and very replayable, and the multiplayer was legendary before it XBL was taken down for the Xbox. A gem to be remember.

2. Halo: Combat Evolved ; My second favorite Xbox Original game :p. The campaign is what even got me into the FPS genre, and the LAN multiplayer is still fun to play in to this very day.

3. Metal Gear Solid 3 ; My favorite MGS, this game has a crazy story, great gameplay, and great characters in The Boss and Naked Snake. Game is still fun to mess around in and has a great replay value.

4. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
5. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
6. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
7. Pokemon Emerald
8. Kingdom Hearts II

1. Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
Seemingly no ceiling to competitive depth, complete with a tutorial which remains unmatched TO THIS DAY, a great training mode, an inventive, addictive, and gratifying single player mode, tourney replays on-disc, VF Anniversary included in NA copies. And it retailed for $20. Fighting game of the forever.

2. Metroid Prime
Daring, but successful. Tremendous atmosphere.

3. Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater
To date the most "fun" a Metal Gear game has been. Wonderful characters and a welcome tuning of the stealth mechanics of past entries.

4. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
A better Star Wars movie than the Prequels and a better Bioware game than any Shepard adventure.

5. Resident Evil 4
The hype surrounding this game's release was unprecedented - how is it even possible that it surpassed expectations? A bold reenvisioning of the RE series that changed action games for the better and horror games for the worse.

1. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory ;
A late addition to the sixth generation, Chaos Theory was the zenith of the Splinter Cell series, and a pinnacle of stealth game design. Avoiding the trial-and-error trap of its predecessors, Chaos Theory's levels were open-ended playgrounds that gave you a variety of interesting toys. Play smart, and you were a hunter—but play recklessly, and you quickly became the hunted. Its standalone co-op campaign and spies vs. mercs asymmetric multiplayer gave the game lots of replayability. The story was typical Clancy-esque globetrotting geopolitics, and yet it always came across as very smart, and never veered into jingoism or xenophobia. Visually, the game was a triumph; it pushed the Xbox hardware to its limits with fantastic lighting effects and subtle, fluid animations that still hold up today. The outstanding electronica soundtrack, composed by Amon Tobin, was distinctive and memorable without being bombastic. Every part of Chaos Theory was well-thought-out and designed to make you feel like a modern-day ninja, and it succeeded mightily, without a single misstep. For all this and more, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was the best game of its generation.

2. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind ;
Morrowind was a paradox. It was clearly designed with the PC in mind, yet it was quite successful as a console title. The massive size of Vvardenfell's open world astounded players, yet that world was never visually impressive, even for its time. The dice-roll combat system was obtuse and archaic, yet spellmaking, enchanting, and alchemy allowed for unparalleled freedom and creativity. Despite these contradictions, Morrowind was a watershed moment for the Western RPG. After years of financial troubles, it was Bethesda's last hope for success—and it paid off in spades. Everyone who played Morrowind, whether they liked the game or not, came away knowing that it never burdened them with artificial or contrived limits. Morrowind was a game that presented an elaborate, lovingly crafted world, and said, "Do what thou wilt."

3. Halo ;
It's the shooter that defined a generation, and the game largely responsible for the Xbox's (relative) success. In many ways, Halo was very simple; you had two weapons, you were fighting aliens in an unremarkable sci-fi universe, and you had a female AI companion/taskmaster. But the execution of these simple ideas rarely wavered, and the addition of wide-open levels, good vehicle play, and the horror-tinged mid-game twist gave it a distinct identity. The game was occasionally bogged down by recycled areas and Flood-dominated slogfests, but never to the point of despair. Split-screen and LAN multiplayer, both co-op and competitive, gave Halo enough staying power to grip the mainstream consciousness in a way that few games have.

dOIlwwx.png

4. Psychonauts ;
When Psychonauts fell out of Tim Schafer's twisted mind, it was a critical success—and a commercial failure. While it gained a cult following in later years, for a long time it could be accurately described as "the best game that nobody played." The game was set in a bizarre, colorful, hilarious, and occasionally terrifying summer camp for psychic kids, and required the player to travel into people's minds and do battle with their phobias, delusions, and eccentricities. The setting, characters, and story were unfailingly whimsical and endearing. Existing in a somewhat nebulous, genre-defying category, Psychonauts took elements from adventure, platformer, puzzle, role-playing, and action games. Yet it didn't feel disjointed, and (barring the late-game Meat Circus) it was consistently joyous to play.

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Four Swords ;
A classic, first released on the SNES, that cast a colossal, unconscious shadow on the entire action RPG genre (though whether or not the game itself falls into that category is up for debate). Exploring the world of Hyrule—delving into dungeons, defeating bosses, solving puzzles, discovering secrets—forms part of the collective memory of a huge swathe of gamers. The Game Boy Advance port allowed you to take that experience wherever you went, and to share it with friends in the multiplayer Four Swords.

x. Valkyrie Profile 2 Yup, another "unique battle system" mention. Tactical positioning on the battlefield - check. AP cost for movement and attacks - check. Enemies with weak spots and destructible components - check. <3 <3 <3

making my list, i knew i would have to think on this one. in the end, i am probably leaving it off, but it's top 20 material easily. the battle system is wonderful and it's great to look at (i love that the non-battle stuff is 2d). the story goes places after about 75% of it being fairly humdrum, which was rather incredible, even for someone who had never played the first game.

9. Grandia II This game made a constant companion to my Dreamcast for the entire time I had it. With its likable cast of characters, its big, clean graphics, and the best battle system ever put in a RPG, this game charmed the hell out of me. Yes, the story is generic, but the rest was so good that I didn't care.

looking at my top ten, and for some reason i keep thinking about grandia ii. i only played it once, in 2001, but it left one hell of an impression. there are other more recent rpgs i played, including valkyrie chronicles ii and final fantasy xii that i also enjoyed for similar reasons, but grandia ii stands above those and figuring out why is hard.

updated the first post.

anyway, here's a list of games that have currently received votes and/or honorable mentions:

Wow - not a single vote for Crimson Skies? It's not among my personal favorites, but I thought the game was pretty well liked.

xbox is getting very little representation overall. i think the original xdudes don't post here much anymore.
I don't know. The sixth generation was weird in its multiplatform titles; often, the Xbox versions were definitive and the PS2/GC ports inferior. From my list, Chaos Theory (and the first two Splinter Cell games, as well) is a good example of that; it wasn't worth playing on the other consoles, whose ports had smaller levels and worse textures and lighting. Ghost Recon 2 is another game that follows the same pattern.

I was pretty much an Xbox-only gamer during that generation (along with my Game Boy Color).

The Xbox didn't really have many big exclusives which have traction. Halo and Ninja Gaiden are the biggest ones. Beyond that there are a number of cult titles which I think people would happily recommend to friends, but probably not stuff which would make a "Games of the Generation" list.

well i mean, would it surprise you if i said that f-zero gx is currently ranked higher than any xbox exclusive?

1. Resident Evil 4 ; [GCN/PS2] This was an absolute game changer for me. Never in my life have I walked away from a game that blew me away from the opening scene all the way to the closing credits. As a casual Resident Evil fan, I was indifferent to the series change, but for me it was this game that made me relook at all action games I had ever played before and was the benchmark for every one afterwards. To me the pacing and gameplay has yet to be matched and is a game I find myself replaying every time it sees a rerelease. The GameCube version was the defining version of this generation, however the PS2 version still stands on its own. Absolute perfection from start to finish and one of the greatest games of all time.

2. Halo: Combat Evolved ; [XB/PC] I don't think Microsoft gets enough credit for how bold and risky their entrance into the console market was back in 2001. As a teenager at the time they managed to sell me on the system day one without ever even knowing what Halo was (as I bought the system as an Oddworld fan). Within a week of launch however the game had absolutely consumed me. Unknown to the addiction of FPS on PC, Halo managed to recreate what us console gamers had been missing and create one of the finest and most balanced shooters I've ever experienced. While the Halo sequels managed to define online gaming, I think what's most impressive about the original is how it arguably was able to create the last true masterpiece for local, competitive shooters. 16 player LAN is still unmatched in my opinion.

3. Beyond Good & Evil ; [GCN/XB/PS2/PC] In 2003 I walked into a GameCrazy (yes, a GameCrazy) with $50 in hand and bought Beyond Good & Evil at full price knowing literally nothing about the game outside of a few screenshots online. About two weeks later I had completed the game and the price had collapsed to $20 and the funny thing was I didn't care one bit. The game was absolute mesmerizing. Never had I felt so impacted by a story and characters until playing this cinematic gem. It was also complemented by top tier action/platforming gameplay that makes certain Zelda games seem boring. Top it off with one of the best art directions and soundtracks of the generation, and the game will forever stand the test of time. If the sequel never sees the light of day it will be a tragedy to gamers worldwide.

4. Shadow of the Colossus ; [PS2] At a time when video game technology was finally making an impression on the general public, many argued that digital entertainment did not classify as art in a way that movies did. Shadow of the Colossus changed that. The mystery and surreal nature of this vast and empty world completely encompasses the player into a setting that leaves more questions than answers. Rather than long winded tutorials and hand holding gameplay, the game goes back to the basics and leaves you as a boy with a sword and his horse on a quest to kill some absolutely spectacular monsters. All the while doing it in one of the most beautiful and emotionally impactful environments ever seen in a video game. The game is an emotional and cinematic ride that never stops.

5. Animal Crossing ; [GCN] While this series has evolved dramatically over the years, and is arguably a better fit on a handheld, the original Animal Crossing was one of the most addictive and interesting games I had ever played back when it was originally released. While The Sims had brought me into a virtual "Big Brother" atmosphere, Animal Crossing took the genre one step further and brought me as the player together with an entire village. It made mundane activities such as planting flowers, and arranging furniture unbelievably addicting and time consuming. It was the first time I ever realized the pain of debt, and how nice it is when you make that final mortgage payment. The game is also incredibly peaceful and casual and I often found myself late into the night strolling through the city listening to the soothing music and insects running through the trees. It's a game that makes me feel like a kid again when I play it.

6. Super Smash Bros. Melee ; I remember back in 2001 not being able to get a GameCube due to widespread sell outs in my area. When Melee was released shortly after launch I decided to buy the game even though I didn't have a system to play it on. I was so obsessed with the game I sat in my room reading the manual over and over until my brother brought home a GameCube weeks later. The game did not disappoint. The local multiplayer was top notch and provided perfectly designed fighting mechanics. The character roster was large and unique. The trophy collecting dipped into Nintendo's long history for the first time ever. And even the computer AI felt like a challenge to provide hours and hours of fun even at a solo level. The game defined the GameCube until its death in 2006 and in my opinion is unmatched by its two sequels.

7. Wario Ware: Mega Micro Game$ ; [GBA] The Game Boy Advance was at an odd place during this generation as it was filled with ports and remakes due to the resemblance and similar architecture of the SNES. Wario Ware Mega Micro Game$ was one of the first original games that I played on the GBA that truly felt like it couldn't be experienced on another console or portable. The quick and short burst gameplay is absolutely perfect for a handheld and made even just a few quick minutes of game time very satisfying. It was also one of the first really good examples of Nintendo using their back catalog and company history to integrate into the gameplay itself. Some might argue that the game was perfected by its sequel "Twisted" but the original holds a place in my heart for being the first of its kind. As one of the most addictive games ever it will make any gamer who aims for high scores playing for years.

8. Phantasy Star Online I & II ; [DC/GCN/XB] I'm not sure how this is defined due to the Dreamcast versions being separate games but if I have to pick I choose the GameCube version. Not only was Phantasy Star Online a truly landmark and revolutionary game for the MMORPG genre, what was so unbelievable to me was how great the offline mode was as well. It provided an addictive hack and slash game style that worked so well playing alone, locally with three other friends, and also with thousands of strangers online. The customization was also wonderful at the time and I found myself creating new characters constantly just to experience different types of classes. To me the MMORPG genre has yet to be topped.

9. Half-Life 2 ; [PC/XB] I'm not one to play sequels without ever playing the original, but after its release and the hype and reception around it I knew I had to try it. Half-Life 2 did not disappoint. The gameplay was incredibly varied and for the first time it made me feel like a FPS doesn't have to just be about shooting things. It felt like a FPS, adventure, and puzzle game all rolled into one yet could be considered the best of each genre. Additionally the emotional story and characters had me walking away from the credits in a way that Hollywood movies such as Terminator 2, and 12 Monkeys had done before. It's a beautiful and smart game with some of the best pacing I've ever experienced.

10. Pokemon FireRed / LeafGreen ; As someone who considers Pokemon to be the greatest gaming franchise of all time, I'm probably a little biased, especially considering this is a remake from a game that defined the original Game Boy. However with that said, even in 2015 for anyone who is new to the Pokemon franchise I 100% always recommend they play these games first. Pokemon Red and Blue, while groundbreaking at the time, were horrendously broken and slow. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen take the originals and fix all the glitches and bugs, while giving them a fresh coat of paint and a shit ton of extra content and post game material. Compatibility with Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/Colosseum/XD extends the life out of these game even more so. If you want to experience exactly what started the Pokemon phenomenon, play these amazing games as they contain arguably the best monsters, overworld, and pacing.

Honorable Mentions:

x. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas ; [PS2/XB/PC] Felt like a Hollywood blockbuster.

x. Mario Golf: Advance Tour ; [GBA] Sports games suck, except for this game. Better than most RPG's.

x. Baten Kaitos ; [GCN] Beautiful. Voice acting is brutal but everything else is perfect.

x. Conker Live & Reloaded ; [XB] Rare's last real gem in my opinion. They botched the multiplayer, but it might be the greatest 3D platformer of all time, and possibly the best looking too.

1. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty ; It’s a defining game of the generation for me . This game is a spiral that you go down and not sure how to get out of it, it destroys your brain at the end. From the philosophical aspects, to the 4th wall breaking interaction, to the impressive cohesion of it all, I have not seen anything like this before. It’s a masterpiece to put it bluntly, and there is a reason why there are so many analyses of the game.
2. Max Payne 2; This is a short but excellent game that made want more when I was done with it. I don’t normally replay games, but this one I replayed multiple times, and each time I experienced something new. I do have to say that I am slomo whore, I even enjoyed the Matrix games because of it…
3. Silent Hill 2; If only I could put down Silent Hill 1, I would have without a doubt. It’s a great game, psychological fear inducing experience, and one that most will not forget.
4. Shadow of the Colossus; Who knew you could create art like this on a console that came out in 2000? From the exploration aspects to the giants that you can climb that are puzzles in themselves, what more can you ask from this game? To put it simply, this is art; high art.
5. Battlefield 1942; Multiplayer only game that should not be forgotten. It was a toss-up between Call of Duty, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and this game. Vanilla version of the game was great, but it’s the mods that propelled this game into another level. Desert Combat anyone? Forgotten Hope? Eve of Destruction? Those are just a few that I remember that made it such a memorable game
6. Resident Evil 4; Great action game, terrible Resident Evil game ;)
7. Unreal Tournament 2004; Probably the best one out of the bunch and for one damn good reason: the mods.
8. GTA: San Andreas; What’s a top 10 list without GTA? This game had everything and I loved every second of it.
9. Gran Turismo 4; Elegance and beauty, Gran Turismo in a nutshell
10. Indigo Prophesy; I really enjoyed the story despite the ending stuff, plus it had a creative way of doing QTEs.

I'm still not sure about places, but I'll never be sure, too many great games and too many I had to leave behind, because I wanted to add some that are forgotten or not loved enough.

your post was already counted. if you're going to update a post, please pm me your original post and the changed one as per the request in the op.

oh boy... I don't have an original post already.
Oh well, I haven't changed that much. We'll leave it how it was.

Sorry about that, I had a comment that it's preliminary list in that post, now I edited that out.
No real harm done, though.

well, I was told it's sixth generation, so from 1998, actually, at least 1999 certainly counts. Years in the thread title are very approximate, as there are games on PS2 for example that were released in 2009 and one of those is on my list, not to mention that Persona 4 released in 2009 in EU too and it's on the lot of lists.
What I mean, 1999 year should be eligible and many people have PC games from that year on their list and it's a year of 6th generation for sure, Dreamcast was released on 1998, for example.
