For me, the entire year has been a complete disappointment. GTA4, Gears2, MGS4, Braid, SSBB, No More Heroes and The World Ends With You, all GAF favourites, all bored me to death. So much so, that I couldn't even come up with 10 games that I liked. In a stark contrast, 12 months back, I had to struggle over which of my favourite 20+ titles to choose from.

With that being said, here's my list...

Playing through Persona 4, but it's moving so slow that I don't think I'll complete it this year.

Also, I bought considerably much less than I've bought in previous years. School, work, and the election (especially school and the election) ate up pretty much all of my free time.

The year started and Burnout Paradise blew me away. It's the best driving/racing game I've ever played, mostly because it's a free-roaming adventure game in many ways. The exploration is what got me hooked, and the free and awesome DLC was what made me stay.

Braid was a surprise and again, it blew me away. I hadn't read up much on it, other than it was a platformer with a time-traveling gimmick. I didn't care much for the story, but I loved the music, art style, and the incredible puzzles. At that point, there was only one game that I hadn't read up on yet, but once I did, I knew it was the only game that could beat Braid.

And I was right. Mirror's Edge surpassed expectations, and provided a thrilling, unique video game with thorough level design, beautiful art direction, and perfect ambient music. And once I was done with the story mode, there was so much left to do. Hell, I'm still not done. Don't listen to the critics. It's not a "6 hour game," not if you play it right, and I'm one who thought I wouldn't be interested in the time trials either. With so many different ways to play, and being one of the absolute best games in my favorite genre and definitely the most unique, Mirror's Edge is my game of the year.

The rest can just be sorta placed there. I enjoyed MM9 and LostWinds a lot. Mario Kart is sort of a guilty pleasure since I sunk in a lot of time online.

Year of the downloadable game for me. A few high profile games made it onto the list (Fable 2, Gears 2, LBP) but my list and my time was dominated by XBLA releases. N+ was great fun in co-op, Castle Crashers was great (I played it local co-op so no bugs for me) and my wife and I had a blast playing Braid together. But my game of the year had to be Geometry Wars 2. I had tons of fun competing with friends for high scores and the local co-op modes were incredibly fun (makes a great party game in the "two people in one ship" modes). There are still many game that came out this year that I've not had time to play that I think I'll enjoy (Mirror's Edge, Prince of Persia, CoD 5 and Valk. Chronicles) but this is my list as of the end of 2008.
