Nah, I didn't like that Yen Lo. Delete!

People here will give you a lot of shit for this but in a million years - when humanity vanishes and aliens who want to learn about the history of our then ancient civilization roam around - they will read this post and nod their heads in agreement

Pretty much hooked on Supa Bwe went back and listened to all of his old stuff, and now I'm over fifty songs deep in material and I'm playing it all over and over.

But what about the serious lack of a beat in this Yen Lo? Just looped elevator music over & over? His monotone rapping isn't bad lyrically but he does sound as bored as I was listening to this album.

There's definitely a lot more going on in those minimal beats than I think you realize. Years of listening to Kanye, Travis, and Future has ruined the ears of the youth.

If you're not feeling the aesthetic of that Yen Lo don't even bother with it again. What he does is pretty unique in the genre.

Night's Gambit > Yen Lo > Grief Pedigree

All 3 are incredible though, especially the first two.

Don't forget the 1200BC EP that's pretty much a primer for Yen Lo.

The menacing buildup in Day 0 for example is nothing short of phenomenal.

And if you can't respect the pianos in Day 93, I can't fuck with you as a hiphop fan and damn near as a person.

BRB. Listening to those two tracks again.

No drum hip hop isn't new. Lots of the LA beats scene didn't have drums, Alchemist has really perfected that sound as well, etc.

I'd just point out not having drums doesn't mean you don't have percussion. To me many of Ka's tracks have some form of percussion. For instance on Day 3 (off the Yen Lo album) the synth bass basically works as percussion, and Ka's raps weave in and out of it. He has many other tracks with more subtle sounds that serve as percussion as well.

My only Ka complaint is that I think he'd be better off with a better mixer/engineer. So much of his sound is about his voice and the subtlety of the production, but there are tracks where his voice is too low on the beat. I've introduced him to people who simply don't know what he's saying, despite him having good enunciation.

Ultimately I think Ka is hip hop at one of its purest forms. It's just rhymes over beats. A stone's throw from spoken word. It's hip hop before the kids plugged into the street lights.
