City Boy Blues to Easy Rider on Mr. Wonderful is still one of the best stretches on a project this year IMO. Psychedelic road trip dive bar rap. The only weak part of that album is the stupid overlong skit. I get people being disappointed with it cause he kinda went left, but I can't agree.

game deserves whatever for acknowledging dude, he walked it back on a recent interview anyway
shoulda kept it moving like jeezy & whoever else just ignored the clown

Mr wonderful was a huge disappointment for me. All the singles pre release were the best songs off the album by far.

i was surprised this seems to be the sentiment for some - i know it was a departure from blue chips/etc but i dug it, totally making my top 10

wow, TPAB is cool now? what happened?

Told yall it needs more listens
Man, what? Got near unanimous critical praise from the jump. Not to mention a lot of people here were on board. It grew on a lot of people. It's an experimental album, so that's expected. My love for it even grew tbh. One of those albums. Plenty will still hate it of course because it's a departure.

Yup, I'm a pretty big Bronson fan too. Dull skits and filler tracks in such a short album. Next one will be nicer hopefully..

Honestly there is a lot to look forward to in '16 for rap too. A lot of people didn't drop projects (Drake, Q, Rashad, Ye, RTJ, Future again). Also those unexpected hits too :]

here we go

1) Summertime '06
2) Dirty Sprite 2
3) GO:OD AM
4) I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside
5) Year of the Savage
6) Barter 6
7) Populair
8) Mr. Wonderful
9) Live Forever
10) Days With Dr. Yen Lo

Honorable Mentions:

To Pimp a Butterfly - the first few songs just turn me off if we're going to be honest (album doesn't pick up for me until "Alright")
Pilot Talk 3 - An album that I like, but it's just forgettable
Summer Mirage / Autumn Mirage - "Museums" might be one of the best songs of the year, but the first few songs on "Summer Mirage" kinda bore me (Autumn Mirage is a good beat tape though)
32 Zel / Planet Shrooms - The first half is really good, while the second half is forgettable
700 Fill - Some of the songs on this project are my favorite Ratking songs ever, which some of them shouldn't had been released
If You're Reading This, It's Too Late - The first five tracks are the best run of songs on any Drake album, but project falls apart after that

EDIT: Albums from other genres I've really enjoyed this year:

Skylar Spence - Prom King
Braids - Deep in the Iris
Deerhunter - Fading Frontier
abhi//dijon - Stay Up
Four Tet - Morning/Evening
Beach House - Thank You Lucky Stars
Health - Death Magic
Machine Girl - Gemini
Ricky Eat Acid - Mixtape
Girlpool - Before The World Was Big
Jamie xx - In Colour
Jeff Rosenstock - We Cool?
Elvis Depressedly - New Alhambra
Toro y Moi - Samantha

I touched on this elsewhere but I definitely feel like the odd man taste wise whenever people decide to list their top tens. I've always gotten the rap as the Bandcamp guy or guy that only likes an artist who maintains a certain level of obscurity. However, I've never found that to be accurate otherwise I wouldn't still be in love with TPAB or feel as though DS2 and now 56 Nights were pretty good albums. When I look at people's lists I feel as though there's a bigger bias with the average poster or just with hip hop listeners in general.

Of course exposure plays a big role in sort of inflating this bias, but in general people seem more more apt to give a hyped release repeat listens and second chances even if their initial assessment is largely negative. That's the conclusion I come to when I see lists containing major artist's third and fourth best albums taking up high spots in what is supposedly a strong year in rap.

If I'm being honest sometimes it is a bit discouraging for me to realize that I'm pretty much the only hyped to check out the breakthrough album by an up and coming, emerging artist. Maybe the rate in which I consume music makes me less complacent with what I see as a lesser effort by a previous favorite artist. I never tire of searching for the next big thing or finding that under dog artist who might not ever break but deserves the spotlight. People clown like it's a knock able trait, but the hunger I have for finding novel sounds doesn't seem like something in which I should be the lone ambassador. A few people seem like they're really going to check out shit that gets posted or finds it's way into rapup, but largely even the scant positive impressions and feedback the lower scale albums get never manifests into people's favorite album list in comparison to the big hyped releases.

I'm not really trying to whine just divulging how I see things. It's like why post shit, might as well wait for the Goldlinks of the world to get Drake cosigns so then you can talk about them.

I really don't understand what you're trying to say Des. Sure hype factors into how we view albums. Yes, that probably makes a difference in our appreciation for albums.

On the other side of the forum you'll find the same thing about games. The games that garner up GOTY's are almost always AAA.

You aren't really pointing out anything new or shocking here. Just is what it is. This community is pretty on point as far as focus goes honestly. We talk about rap across era's and the occasional underground release may get discussed. I love your wrap ups, and of course have appreciated your contributions for years around here. But dude, it seems like you are just making them to say that you made your effort for the underground. Then when we don't have a list with a few of those littered throughout you say we only care about hyped releases.

Can't you just be happy you were right about 90059 :\

I'm not trying to point out anything shocking just making an observation, people are cool with posts spamming DS2 in stores, but I offer an opinion and share an honest outlook and it's a problem.

If we can be serious for a moment

Des, I think a few things are happening here. Speaking for myself because I don't know how anyone else sees it:

1. You DO consume music at a crazy rate and dig more than most people are willing to dig. These are just the realities. It's only natural you're more willing to listen to and/or list unknowns because that's what you do. The music industry's a mess, and it takes time and effort to dig through project after project, sound after sound, sub-genre after sub-genre finding diamonds. The vast majority of people don't do this. A few in GAF-Hop do, and I appreciate the more obscure Bandcamp/Soundcloud links even if they don't end up on a top 10.

2. It's easy to forgot lesser known artists or artists you've only just started listening to. I made my list just skipping through my most played albums, but digging only a little deeper I came across something like Soul Glitch that probably deserves a spot. I simply forgot about it because it released during a stacked Q2 where a bunch of artists I've been listening to for years dropped good projects. I'm willing to bet this happens to everyone. You hear something new that's pretty great, go back to your dusty old reliables, and suddenly you've forgotten the great new project you listened to 3 times back to back a few months earlier.

3. You gotta make peace with the fact that a lot of people just really like this Drake B side compilation bruh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not everyone's built to be music explorers. Sometimes the allure of that album everyone talks about can't be ignored, and is more accessible, or more familiar. Sometimes those fruitless treks through pages of Bandcamp music in search for something don't feel worth it (I've been there and you come out the other side 3 hours later like "Whyyyy"). Sometimes you play your role and let the taste makers do what they do best, only jumping onto the train after the quality has floated to the top. Maybe you already dedicate too much time scouring the internet for lesser known work in other media. Maybe hip-hop/music in general is just comfort food.

And even with artists like Goldlink, I think a bunch of people just straight up miss those releases, it isn't a case of actively not listening to or analyzing them because they haven't blown up. Dude makes catchy music. I'm sure a lot of people in the thread who don't listen to Goldlink would enjoy his work but, yeah, exposure makes a difference. So, for some, it takes a Drake co-sign gets the ball rolling. In the end at least more ears are opened.

man i know i spoke a bit on RP's no limit shit

but real talk, anyone consider's des' insights/attempts to put us onto shit needs to get the fuck out

shit is a literal cornerstone of gaf-hop; losing it would mean this spot makes less sense than playboy without nudes

Naw, it's not a problem. It just feels like a little bit like you're posturing and making it out to seem like the community is against you. I'm sure the grand majority respect your opinion regardless of whether or not those albums you mention get acknowledgment consistently.

as a nashvillian, i can confirm our hot chicken is fucking great.

edit: and to actually contribute to the discussion; des is good peoples and shares shit most wouldn't find on his/her own so i appreciate that. agreed with the above. not everything gets the acknowledgement it may deserve, but clowning people for liking mainstream releases/late to the party cosigns is off-putting too. different rates of consumption and exposure yada yada yada.

I'm not trying to come off as a victim. I don't know why people keep insinuating that... I also don't want to force my opinion on anyone. Just simply explaining my approach to music listening and my beef with being one of the Bandcamp guys and how I relate to thread generally.

Des, I think it's one part you just consuming music at multiple times the rate of other regulars here like Net_Wrecker said, the other part IMO is then talking about it is difficult because people also have a limited bandwidth for how many recommendations they'll accept because they only have so much time/energy to listen to so much stuff.

Personally, I stick to mainstream releases and wait for GAF-Hop to test the waters with and vet new stuff. Wouldn't have even touched Kendrick/TDE, Blu, A-1, Pac Div, etc. if you (and others) hadn't put that shit out there. That's my filter and it works for the amount of time I have. You can't worry too much about other's opinions because you could always be listening to more, it's all fun and games, but I know that feel of being super into something and lacking people who keep pace or are able to have deeper discussion about something
s/o to the Battle Rap echo chamber thread

I mentioned it before but the descriptions in wrap ups/reviews help. Or if you like x you might like y, and FWIW you do that more than most in in this thread, so I appreciate that.

I agree with this especially. Remember that Jazz Cartier album we all liked earlier this year? Not one mention in our top 10s.

Not trying to paint you as a victim either, btw. I get your stance, but it's something that occurs in every community, in every genre of music, in every medium. It's time consuming to listen to the amount of albums discussed in here or even a decent percentage of them. A lot of stuff is going to be left out of lists. I'm very guilty of that as well. Can't even count the amount of times I've posted "Wow, how did I miss _________" 6 months later.

I've basically trademarked "I was sleeping" at this point. Too much to sort through.

As long as we all agree Witcher 3 is GOTY.

That's not how you spell Rocket League

Witcher 3 for soundtrack of the year though
