it's weird, I really enjoy Kendrick's albums but don't listen to them that often. it's not like they're lacking replay value or anything. TPAB > GKMC tho

..ima revisit MBDTF later today/tomorrow and see how it find me these days

nice, interested to see if your opinion has changed

MBDTF got slightly better with time for me. Still don't think it's great and I consider it one of Kanye's weakest albums, but it's not bad.

I feel like it's totally unnecessary to rank tpab and gkmc. Both incredible albums aiming for completely different things.

Yeah... I'm a Starlito fan, but at some point you can't just throw out some tape crammed w/ 2 minute tracks of you over jacked beats.

Hes been kinda silent this year i think he's dealing with some shit but a real tape is coming later this year. He does this stuff to stay busy i think.

Put GKMC on in the whip to celebrate the 3 year anniversary of King Kenny's coronation

To Pimp A Butterfly is a more timely record, it's a more important record, it's a more challenging record...but I'm not sure that it's ultimately as enjoyable to listen to as good kid MAAD City.

Both masterpieces tho.

Jewels is low key just as good as Word...Life tbh. Probably one of the better DITC albums overall.

I have no idea how TPaB is this once in a generation masterpiece! for some of you. To me it's just a good album, with some interesting rapping and song concepts, brought down by some on-the nose material, moments of maximum corniness, and hit-or-miss production.

Still can't listen to For Free, King Kunta, I, without hitting a straight

Agreed.

Show & AG never get the props they deserve. Honestly I kinda want to have a discussion about them vs Gangstarr. Could be interesting.

really down to see this discussion

Times Up by O.C. Has to be one of the most timeless tunes of 90's hip-hop.

Shit still sounds incredible today, over 20 years later.

can't not love this track

shouts to duke for putting me on blast @ 2:10

nice, interested to see if your opinion has changed

yeah, honestly wanna leave the hype/my preconceptions behind & see it years later for what it is

So you can't stand three songs and gonna front like the rest of the album ain't great. How can one stand Hov who's best albums have just as many stinkers if not more and try to front like the three tracks you weren't feeling some how bring down the powerful piece of art that is TPAB.

can't tell if youre trolling me or nah but

did i completely lay the onus of the entire album on those three songs? I just said they sucked. Were i to go on, i might also say that the Mortal Man interview almost ruins one of the best hip hop songs Kendrick has ever made. I might also say that Anna Wise fucks up Institutionalized (seriously, she's awful). I don't really care for Momma either, because it's discount flylo. I might also say that it doesn't really have a standout single on the entire thing.

I might also say that i'm not really into the sampler platter jack of all trades master of none approach Kendrick took with the whole thing sonically.

All Anna Wise did on Institutionalized was a vocal overdub along with K.dot and Bilal. Tough to see as a make-or-break thing to me.

yeah, interview gave me chills the first time but i dont know that id let it ride everytime. as a hip hop fan used to skipping skits/etc forever it's no bother

looking back though? the anti-pac crowd here calling it corny should've been expected i guess

Jewelz > Word...Life. Listened to both for the first time a few days ago.

I felt the production and songwriting were noticeably better on Jewelz. Even better delivery-wise.

Gonna keep My World, Dangerous, Jewelz and The Crow on rotation.

King Kunta is dope. It's a straight up funk record. Would I have loved to hear Dre's take on it? Absolutely, but what we got is dope.

The live version of i is dope. It's more of an interlude than anything else tbh.

Yea Ann Wise is trash on Institutionalized (sorry but I don't want to hear a white chick singing that line. MAYBE Adele but that's it)...but then the beat shifts and I forget about that.

The fact that I didn't find that Tupac interview corny as fuck when I first heard it blew my mind. If someone told me about it before I actually listened to it, I'd probably cringe. Kendrick managed to pulled it off quite elegantly, I don't listen to it every time I play the song because I'm not a fan of skits(Though I do love the background instrumentals during it) but I love Mortal Man so much. Might be my favorite Kendrick song.

I don't understand the jack of all trades master of none comment Esch. TPAB is very focused sonicaly, lyrically and thematically. He found his direction and went hard. Could you explain a lil further?

I really like the instrumental version of i and the skit is pretty good.

While the album is very concise and focused, it's never always straight forward. The best songs are the ones that can be digested in different ways, where Kendrick is questioning rather than preaching like These Walls,TBTB,Momma,How Much a Dollar question.

Then songs like You Ain't Gotta Lie, Complexion, Wesley's theory, Hood politics that are pretty straight forward just plain sound great right off the bat while being well written songs.

U hits hard as bricks, one of Kendrick's mot honest songs where he just tears himself apart

Fuk I love this album

I don't think TPAB is that amazing either, but How Much A Dollar Cost is my favorite rap song of the year. Some of the off-kilter shit he tries misses the mark for me.

It's intentional, but on the boards (and the vocal arrangements/stylings tbh) the album is a smorgasbord of black music from the 20th and 21st century. 90s west coast hip hop, various schools of jazz, funk, west coast instrumental hip hop, etc. Contrast this with say Shabazz Palaces, who pick a single style of production and explore a bunch of different voices in that style in one single LP.

It's just a matter of preference.

That Pac interview could have easily failed depending on how it was done. Kendrick pulled it off perfectly. Even more impressive: the jazz backdrop. That's arguably the best piece of music on the album to me. Also one of the most painfully short pieces of music in recent memory imo.

It's the type of shit I can imagine Cole hearing and thinking "fuck, I thought of that!" Nah nigga.

Not even December yet

Haven't even got VFT6

And y'all talking about AOTY

Sremmlife 2 in stores Holiday 2015

Really curious to see how the next Sremmlife does. They had multiple hits. Do they have an actual fanbase that will buy the new record, or have people moved on to the next hot thing.

It sure has, but as a whole I don't fuck with it. I can't wait for Sway Lee going full solo and develop himself further, he has a Weeknd-like future ahead if he plays his cards right.
