Day 1.

People would stand in line to suck COD's cock if it were made by some indie developer. Since it's not they hate on it. I play on PC, but the image quality they manage to pull off on X360 is seriously best in the biz. I don't care what engine it runs on. COD is the best looking game overall on consoles.

PC, with 32xCSAA, some SGSSAA and forced Ambient Occlusion it can give some games a run for their money. Still easily the game with the best gun models in any FPS. Arguably the best feeling shooter as well.

But since it sells 10 mil, GAF hates on it. If it were some bleeding heart indie dev'd game they'd be all over it. Shit is good. I can play MW3 with great ping and barely any lag. NBA 2K12 won't even connect to the network. Sure it's done with a lot of smoke and mirrors but I give two fucks less how they do it, finished product is all that matters, and COD games have Nintendo esque polish.

I wouldn't say it's just Gaf that hates cod, trust me gamespot has the same hate for it lol. I don't hate cod but im not going crazy for it like i did back in the cod 4 days....I do miss those days alot too

Anyways I might end up getting BO2 as well.

Really playable game series, but i dont find the set pieces fun, the art assets to be interesting,or the gunplay to be weighty enough for me. I definitely dont think its a patch on the best looking console games either (looks at Sony) although they should laud themselves for how nice it looks and how smooth it runs overall.

i would definitely think all of the things i dislike about the series wouldbe improved if they had some more time to sit in the kitchen before every release *shrug*

either way you cut it COD4 is really one of the most influential games ever made. just look at how FPS changed this gen.

it took goldeney/halo/etc mass appeal FPS and tore the roof off; shit got more popular than fake titties and i couldn't go anywhere - even work - without people playing it. you remember how platformers were the default genre when you were a kid, then it was beat-em-ups? MW4 put FPS as the new default genre on lock.

if you're asking specifics, i barely played it too so im not sure if it was perks or auto-aiming or whatever, but i know the genre blew the fuck up after that.

When I played COD 4 I knew it was about to blow up big time. Wasn't surprised that the franchise hit it that big. It was also the last cod game I played....fuck it im gonna preorder black ops 2

COD4 changed the game. The pacing of shooters, the look, zoom-heavy play, emphasis on set pieces, multiplayer things (example: perks in Halo now)....

Even a lot of aesthetic bits from COD games can be seen all over.


And i would agree that Killzone 2 feels the best out of any shooter in this gen, and Killzone 3 looks the best(on consoles). It's very much the BLACK or FEAR of this generation in that regard for me. COD feels too weightless and floaty for me in comparison. Something like Halo would get a D here.


about FPS blowing up... When have these shits not been popular? The FPS genre pushes gaming forward, period really.

i mean, on PC? shit goes back forever, i dug Wolfstein on the one rig i had access to in the day - dudes still play counterstrike out here.

i used goldeneye cause when i was in college, that shit took over entire dorm floors. halo followed it, and no doubt shit was crazy popular, i just thought COD took it to another level when, again, even people i knew that didnt really play games anymore (young or old) were in on it. it was like the inverse angry birds or some shit.

Smooth perfect 60fps with vsync on consoles with really good p2p netcode. Really the best made console shooter this gen. Some would argue Halo, but for me FPS has to be 60fps just as much as fighting games have to be FPS. Otherwise it's fundamentally broken.

The series gets a lot of undeserved hate, but c'mon, they pump em out every year and barely anything's changed since CoD4 in 2007. Plus with the number of CoD wannabe shooters, and CoD game design popping up in literally EVERY genre across the board making franchises worse, the hate is to be expected.

I won't criticize anyone for buying the games, I used to and millions of people will every year, but they fell off hard with MW2 IMO, and I abandoned the series and haven't looked back.

There has yet to be a FPS to touch F.E.A.R. gunplay since 2005 IMO. That game was fast, messy, and brutal. Call of Duty can't compare. Way too weak.

Yea. Its not really. It stays from 40-60 (xbox version more like 50-60, but its not really a perfect locked 60.


I have the Ps3 version of COD4, and while it was smoother than anything else(and definitely the best available shooter on the system at the time... Eh.

I think Halo and Killzone compensate for FPS very well. Halo does it by slowing gameplay down enough. Killzone's motion blur (which is god status btw) and stellar netcode make it very very smooth online.

@Net_Wrecker, I feel ya, but FEAR at the end of the day falls apart feelwise in that your character still feels like a gun on a swivelstick rather than a dudebrah with a gun.

The only thing they did was make things more mainstream for console folks. They really didn't do much in the terms of advancing anything, especially when you compare them to the PC shooters...or TimeSplitters 2. :/ I like them, but it is what it is.

It depends on what you mean by "advancement" but if you dont think cod4 changed the look, feel and play of shooters big time you're either attributing everything to a general movement or you're not giving the series the credit it deserves for setting trends.

or maybe it just hasnt been long enough. Either way I would say take a look at every shooter on consoles before cod 4 dropped and then after and see what happened yourself.

I don't think regen health is an advancement, nor the restriction of freedom that I was accustomed to in PC shooters & Halo (to a smaller extent). I think it was a negative trend that it set, that only recently started to change. A trend is a trend tho.

You're right though. For better or worse, the big three that changed consoles are Goldeneye, Halo, and COD4. I wish they would borrow more from Goldeneye's difficulty / multiple objectives system.

COD4 and Halo definitely had a huge impact on the FPS genre, too bad it was a in shitty way. Now we have an endless stream of generic shooters that all look exactly the fucking same and play exactly the fucking same.
At least COD has it's fun moments, even if the game runs out of steam quickly. Halo is just garbage from beginning to end.

COD strikes the right balance between the fast paced railgun style gameplay of Quake and slower paced shooters. It may not keep a rock solid 60 but it is usually close and most importantly the controller input lag is as low as it can go on consoles. I couldn't get into MW3 at all because the sightlines in all the maps were way too small for my liking.

I'll probably get Black Ops II on PC this time round because I've put my 360 into retirement.

yeah I mean its definitely smooth enough. 60fps is nice but its not necessary to me, give me 30 with blur and I'm alright tbh. I just think like siddx that the games have really homogenized the pace of shooters. I like the slower paced stuff like rainbow six and kill zone more personally, or the breakneck pace of the It and quake stuff. and it feels like both have kinda died out.

*hates gears, thirsts for UTIV and bullet storm 2*

Last one they made was MW3, which I just got a couple weeks ago. The campaign was better than BLOPS and MW2 IMO, and I dig the small refinements made to MP leveling. Maps are nice too, but I didn't start really playing til I had both the Content Packs, so who knows, maybe they sucked before then. I don't even know which ones are "stock".

I know they shit one out every year, and I should hate that, but I've played the fuck out of every one and got my monies worth. /shrug

Dat Raven/Sledgehammer collabo on MW3 was actually a thing of beauty.

I can't fucks with Killzone in any manor. Walking around with a 400lb assault rifle with the motion blur of a man drunk on Thunderbird. Can't rock with it.

Oh and sure COD is light and floaty. So was Quake and UT. It's not a sim. Plus, Kill Cam. I love it. It's lets me know I really do suck and am not getting hacked.

I love that blur mane... love how its stylized and overemphasized. when you sprint it feels like what a soldier running in full gear should feel like. clunky, weighty and panicked.

dat weight when you buss off a clip, the sound, and the flawless way the game animates someone getting bodied ( animation + collison blending)... feels good man.


when I'm playing a game that looks realistic with a realistic theme... I kinda want it to play realistic.

The death lag killed me. I'd be capping a guy I killed 5 seconds ago.

I did enjoy the pure Mayhem of that one KZ2 game mode where every map turned into a clusterfuck. Game just feels drunk overall to me. Opinions tho, that's why they make more than 1 game.

yeah the death lag was a problem. but it was significantly improved in 3 for sure IMO... I think you would like that game better. the aim lag is mostly gone and the weightiness is decreased a lot. it plays tighter, but its lost some of that style IMO. they also added in this cool storyliney scenario map element. kzs coolest thing was that mode where you just switch up objectives and game types without going back.to lobby. actually some of the best overall objective based map this Gen. although the death match is kinda meh.

I'm ehhh on both of those games. burnout only fuels my ADD so much but I do love the way they animate a crash I guess.

I played the fuck out of unreal tournament 2. I'd kill for another one with a similar feel. Fast paced holy fuck rockets and laser beams from every direction.

On a hip hop related note, shade 45 was playing a 50 cent set to celebrate his birthday and I had forgotten how deep the dudes catalog is. If you look at just individual tracks, he has a lot of quality.

The only FPS I played religiously was Wolfenstein ET. That game took over my life. I can't really find any FPS with a similar team/objective/class based gameplay. TF2 obviously comes to mind but I don't like the guns each class is forced to use...it's fun, just not something I can play for hours

only games I truly fuck with are SC2 and Diablo 3 to a lesser extent. Waiting on Guild Wars 2; I used to be a big WoW head and that game looks right up my alley

BF3 audio is great, but I still think COD has the best gun models. That Remington logo on the side of the ACR is sweet.

Halo is still the pinnacle of the FPS genre. Haven't played much of Half-Life though, first one bored me to tears before I could get anywhere with it.
