Cant Hold Us is from August 2011. Went #1 in May 2013
Same Love is July 2012. Peaked at #2 in July if I'm understanding wiki right. But I think it charted before Can't Hold Us.
Thrift Shop is August 2012. #1 in Feb 2013.

They might have been older tracks, but they weren't pushed as singles until after Thrift Shop.

I do remember hearing thrift shop for the first time in August or September 2012 and thinking "this is really catchy, it could be a minor hit for him". Just a bit of an understatement.

heh, same here. I remember posting it on FB and saying it got a few chuckles out of me, and it's pretty catchy.

Then like a month later, everyone was going crazy over it.

Personally, I'm still waiting for the superior current Seattle hip-hop group to get their shine though

Definitely a better band, but don't have anywhere near the kind of mainstream appeal that will get them any macklemore level success. I also love grayskul and again, they will never see big success.

Vegetarians are jackasses. Who doesn't like a good steak?

As for vegans, I'm with siddx. Any experience I've had with vegans they're always arrogant self righteous tools. At least the ones I've met.

These people need to shut up and eat a hamburger

haha, true. Maybe in some alternate universe, the struggles and triumphs of immigrants in this country, and the abuses of American power are the most popular subject matter in mainstream hip-hop!

What's the deal with this Because the internet script? Is he turning it into a movie? The way Gambinos been talking lately makes me think he's on Kanyes dick for doing all of the stuff he does besides rap. Its irritating. "I don't want to be just a rapper". God just shuttup please.

Yeah, the album is a soundtrack to a movie or something

Yeah, but his comments just reek of being so self righteous in the way that he says them. Like he says he doesn't want to "make albums" anymore, and that albums are boring to him now. He's talking like he's going to change the game or something, like he's going to pioneer something new. It reminds me of kanyes rants and all the crazy stuff he says/used to say. The only problem is Gambino isn't nearly big enough to impact anything like Kanye did.

it is directionless crap though.

I think it's just a story about a kid who's broken that ends up having his issues amplified by internet culture. It's not a statement about internet culture in and of itself because there are other characters around him that clearly don't have the issues that he does, even if their own morality is questionable in it's own ways. Then there's also the character Jhene plays who seems to have similar emotional issues as the protagonist and together things work well for them... but she doesn't spiral the way he does because she doesn't subscribe to the wild west aspect of internet culture so there's no amplification there.

Basically it's about an emotionally screwed up kid who is further fucked up by the emotionless "for the lulz" corner of the internet. I mean the somewhat abstract nature of the storytelling can be criticized, sure. That's sort of whatever though. A taste thing. I found the story interesting. It's very bleak though. I'm not sure I could say I liked it or not. But I see a story there and the fact that it was intriguing enough to make me think gives it value in my book.

I think that because Glover has said he enjoys Kanye's stuff outside of music, that you're sort of projecting Kanye's image onto him. Glover has always maintained that he's not a rapper and it's never been a negative thing either. He's saying he doesn't deserve to get put on that level because he's not about putting out music with the same dedication and direction as rappers. Dude is just trying to be creative.

He's not trying to change what anyone else is doing. He's just doing something different that he wants to do. So while he's somewhat similar to Kanye in terms of being more artistic with his shit, he doesn't have the same goals as Kanye at all. There's no "I'm the next Ghandi" to his shit. He's just a dude doing shit.

Holy shit. Go to page 138 of the VGX thread. Look at everyone shit on rap as a genre cause of Jay rocks performance.

WAT.

Edit: it was a good performance too.

Brehs, I think it's time we all sit down and thank Spike, Rockstar & Gametrailers for giving Jay Rock a show. In these trying times in his career, I think it's pretty awesome of them to throw him a bone and put him alongside acts like Game and Odd Future to give dude some exposure.

The band was sorta off. I wouldn't say they're bad, but it's a bit weird. Something about the synths or something is really off putting.

It's working a bit better for Game right now but it's still off.

All this. I think the synths are a little too piercing, need to be turned down a bit.

Does that surprise you? One has to only go back to the GTA:SA reveal thread to see how big a shit sandwich gaming side can be at times.
