Now for the nobody gives a shit, but I feel like writing it review of
Eminem - MMLP2
Bad Guy - Okay, so this song catches you off guard. The more you listen to it, the better it gets. What seems to be another song about Marshall crying about Kim fucking other guys takes a dark turn that after hearing it makes a ton of sense and closes the loop on the Stan parable. There are some corny lines (nitwit, peeked) but overall a great exercise in storytelling.
I thought peeked/peaked was supposed to be a corny line. You actually hear him "ha ha" in the back
Rhyme or Reason - Beat jacking your own artist? That's such a dick move Slim. That said, the rappity rap is pretty good. The line about great power breeding no responsibility made the nerd in me happy. The singing of his own hooks...shit, as always. Still a net positive.
I though he sang this hook quite well. Better than what singing attempt comes later in the album.
So Much Better - Ah, here is the 'fuck women' song. Again, if he didn't sing the hook, this wouldn't be a bad song. The rhymes are on point, but this is just a song he's made about 55 times. No bueno.
I agree with you but still enjoyed it. Fuck women song is an Em staple as much as any other artist has their own staple about women. But here the beat, the hook, and verses all work for me.
Survival - SKIP. NEXT. FUCK OFF SCREAMINEM.
Should have been a bonus cd track. Don't like it but don't hate it as much as what's about to come later in the album. Would have worked a lot better if Khalil provided a better beat. I think this was an attempt to be Till I Collapse part 2 but production and hook seriously let this one down.
Some clever flow and verses but the screaming ruins it. Should have been a COD only track of bonus CD.
Legacy - This is a song that only a 40 year old Eminem could really pull off. A look back on a life lived largely in a crazy persona built to shield himself from a shitty life, then morphed later into a way to sell records. This song is straight from the MMLP - TES era Eminem.
Loved this song. Really well written technically and story telling wise. Of course being an Eagles fan the Dawkins line fucking gets me pumped with images of him superflexing WRs.
Asshole - Skyler Grey? I am severely attracted to her, but uh. The song still sucks. It's rappity rap with no real point.
I know a lot of people don't like this song but of all the things I expected when I saw Grey and Alex Da Kid producing, this one wasn't it. In a good way. Her singing is minimum and in fact you can't even distinguish her voice really cause it could have been anybody.
I liked the 2nd verse a lot. This is the only song on the album really about being the mirror to white america, how they see him, and how they blame him for a fucked up world. The whole part of the 2nd verse about Colorado, vest to see Batman, and being a parent are damn good. Beat is also a lot different than I expected.
Beserk - Everybody hates this song. I like it. It's bombastic, it makes my head nod. Em name drops the Beastie Boys on every album - this is his labor of love track, his love letter to some of his teenage idols.
Only the first verse is good but Rubin's production and catchy hook makes the song work. I don't skip it when it comes on even though the verses and actual rapping is weak. This works where Survival failed.
Rap God - Good ass rappity rap. This is the song in response to anybody who has said he's fell off. His talent is still there. The subject matter he speaks about is getting old and he drops more corny lines now than he ever did, but Rap God shows that in his weight class - Nas, Jay, etc, nobody is going to straight out rap him.
Agreed but this song could have been edited down to a 4 min song to make it stronger. Cut out the hot stylz gay looking boy part and the ray jay part. I actually saw the song as a tribute to a lot of the legends and it would have worked much better if he stayed on topic.
But it seemed like he had it in his head that he had to make a 6 min song here so had to fill it up with bars don't make any sense.
Brainless - I shouldn't like this song. It's another 'I used to get bullied, but now I'm awesome' song from Em. But man, Verse 2 is just on point. I can't help but like this track.
But again what do you want him to talk about? I rather hear this then Em try to be a gangsta like he was being during the whole G-UNIT 50 Cent peak days.
The beat, hook, and verses are all quintessential Em and catchy. In fact its probably one of the best beats on the album including the bonus tracks.
Stronger Than I Was - What the holy fuck. This is the worst Eminem song since Ass Like That. This is the shit that ended Ja's career and the shit that the world laughs at Drake about. This is terrible on every level.
This song. This song is where you wish you could have been in the room when he recorded it. When his inner circle heard it. When people decided to look at each other and said "fuck how do we tell him no?"
I wish someone had the sense to beat the shit out of him for even attempting this song. Hailie's song is 1000x times better and even there I skip ahead to the verse. Here the verse is terrible. Maybe even worse than the singing.
Wife won't let me skip the track though cause she laughs out loud to his grunting in the back.
And this is worse than anything Drake does. I don't like Drake's singing songs but at least he can sing.
The Monster - The pop song of the record. It's not terrible, but it's not great. I can't say that I like it, but after the last track this isn't that bad. It's lukewarm. I'd give this half credit.
After the last song this is a revelation. Not great but I hate it far less than when I first heard it. Beat is way to mellow and up beat for what the song is about. Verses are actually well written, especially the 3rd one but the hook overpowers everything.
Video is cool enough to make the song sound tolerable. Radio is going to make it one of my most hated Em songs ever though.
I like this a lot less than Beautiful Pain. Again this song didn't need to be on the album and Beautiful Pain would have worked as a pop single itself.
So Far - The beat is super distracting. The song is goofy fun though. The lines about him not understanding computers are hilarious as is the one about Yela being better.
Love Game - Not what I expected from a KDot feature. I mean, it's not a bad song, but it's very, very disappointing.
Yup. Initial disappointment aside I actually like this song a lot. Kendrick sounds like he is having fun doing a song like this.
These two toured and will tour again next year in Australia. Hopefully another collabo along the lines of what people expected comes out of it.
Liked Love Game and So Far both but they shouldn't be back to back. Doesn't make sense.
Headlights - This is some powerful shit. Grown man Eminem is what a 40 year old rapper should be on. We don't need navel gazing on every song, but this was a song that was needed to balance out the persona rap shit.
Evil Twin - This is another song that was necessary. The common complaint against Em is that nobody knows what a old shock rapper should be rapping about when his daughter is in high school, he's wealthy beyond belief and is on the other side of a serious drug addiction that defined his music for so long. Evil Twin is the song that shows that the honest Em is still there and he's asking the same questions that everybody else is asking of him.
Agreed on both songs.
Bonus Tracks
Baby - This song is straight from 50 cent era Eminem. Pretty catchy for such a silly song.
Should have been on the album over Stronger Than I was, Survival, or The Monster.
Love the 3rd verse. His flow is insane throughout the song though.
Is Redman still trying to leave Def Jam to sign to Shady?
Desperation - No. This ain't love and this ain't a song I'm ever listening to again.
Terrible.
Groundhog Day - This is a great song. Fantastic beat (probably the best on the entire record) and Em flows on it perfectly. This is a song that should've been on the record.
Beautiful Pain - This song was clearly meant to be the Rhianna track before he knew she was going to do the song. It's not bad, but the fake Rhianna singer is too distracting and the Recovery flow on the song makes this feel like a lost song from that. Meh.
Wicked Ways - Something is off about how the song was mixed. The beat is super loud and overtakes the lyrics, which annoys the hell out of me. The song is a bunch of nothing.
All three should have been on the album over Stronger Than I was, Survival, or The Monster. And how you gonna dis Sia and prefer Rhianna over her? I liked Beautiful Pain a lot more than The Monster. I think Sia has one of the most unique voices in the pop world.
I'd also add
Don't Font to the total. Didn't make the clearance in time so it ended up being the COD only song which makes no sense.
You mix those tracks around and put the weaker ones on the bonus and its a really good album IMO.
