Ehh, it didn't blow me away, but I thought Kno still brought it on production. Worth it for that.

Yes, the production is solid, but I was so disappointed (coming after NWL, Death is Silent and Oneirology)...

Chico and the Man though, can't wait. It's gonna be awesome.

I'd say King is the best one, the production that album is stellar, especially the Just Blaze and Mannie Fresh beats.
I think most people prefer Urban Legend and Trap Muzik though, they're both pretty good too.
I never liked Paper Trail that much, his rapping has improved on that album but most of the songs are underwhelming IMO.

I'd second this.

King for me too, King Back, I'm straight, undertaker, bankhead, what you know, that was his last great one.

Listening to King right now, haven't heard it in a minute and man, what a great fucking album.
Has T.I. ever sounded as vicious as his last verse here?

Any Sexion d'Assaut fans here? My gf introduced me to them. They're pretty awesome.

It's French, and I don't understand ONE word. But they make great music IMO.

I love French hip hop.
Here's some more examples:

Anyway, hopefully someone will give this a listen, some really great tracks here.

Listened to that new Cudi. Not feeling the hook but otherwise damn, Cudi back. I really wanted MotM 3 but it's sounding like he's going back to that MotM 1 sound so I'm happy regardless. Just wishing for the production and overall sound to be as close to MotM 1 as possible.

TI? Trap Muzik and Urban Legend. King is a shell of those two. The rest....eh.......

Trap Muzik and Urban Legend are honest to god 5 mic albums tho. Not one song need be skipped on either.

In other news, I haven't even bothered putting anything else on my Android after Channel Orange. It's all my Cadillac needs. Figure I'll put BOATS on there someday. Just got back from a Frappe run, and cotdamn, CO still does it for me. Every single track.

Good stuff Grzi/Second. maybe i'll be able to catch up on my Francais indirectly and get back to where i was with the language with a lil listening.

kams, when are you off to navy world?

Gonna cop a drug test tomorrow at the store. Once the THC is gone, so am I.

EDIT: Unless I can find a kick ass job in the meantime. Fuck I'd rather be blowing kush in my Caddy than sleeping on a bunk in the middle of the ocean.

ahhhh. so it's not final final? you don't sound that dedicated to the cause man.

Well yeah. I've got two beautiful daughters here in the states (Ohio to be exact) and the idea of being away from them and all the other bullshit involved is really sinking in more and more. The only thing keeping me pushing toward it is the 20 and done thing. Being retired at 50 could have it's perks.

uhghhg. i guess ill listen to Aesop Rock. But if it's not good, im blaming Toku.

for the first time? dont listen to the new one.

@ kams: that's a tough decision man. retiring at 50 does sound great. but having your future determined for the next 20 years sounds kinda shitty. also comfortable, maybe.

rappity rap x incoherency

if that's your thing you'll be in heaven. I will say that the newest joint is the best I've heard from the dude. But it's still incoherent rappity rap. Like Joell Ortiz high on acid in an abstract philosophy library.

It depends. Ive never liked anything by Aes, i find him to just be annoying as fuck. but if the beats are good, maybe ill like it

lol. whats rappitty rap refer to? besides aesop

daylight ep is a good intro to aesop imo.
its basically referring to when rappers will do a couple things....They'll use as many goofy ass 27 letter words out of the thesaurus as they can when they could have used 2 small words and conveyed the same thing. thisll often make them either unnecessarily hard to follow or sound corny as fuck, not to mention look pretentious as fuck. You see it associated with a lot of battle type rappers and backpacker guys, who think that being a god emcee is basically equivalent to some mathematical equation of "speed of rap x lyrical complexity= skill and/or musical quality". Canibus, Slaughterhouse, Aesop, Tech N9ne, etc etc

its basically like porn, you know it when you see it

GIMME A ZANTAC BEFORE I BLANK OUT INTO ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK
THE SURGEONS HOMOPHILIA GOT HIM ON MY COCK
REMOVE MY MALIGNANT GROWTH WHILE I SMOKE THIS ROCK
WHILE THE TEMPORAL FEELING OF THIS PAROXYSM IS ON MY CLOCK

Yeah, Joell and Crooked I are probably the current poster children for rappity rap. Canibus being one of the godfathers.

hahah alright i get it. when i first saw it used on here i thought it was referencing the dumbass ballaballa talking nonsense rap that we love so much. how wrong i was

I feel like it comes down to production. Rappity rap with good beats gets praised, and rappity rap with bad beats are backpack "talking a lot but saying nothing" fools. There's been a weird rappity rap backlash in the last few years as "middle ground" rappers started making a name for themselves, but there's still a time and place for everything.

Rappity rap is a very 00's thing. I attribute it to battle rappers getting record deals (Canibus), the underground at the time being very attached to the idea that lyricism uber alles(hipsters burnt out on tropes of gangsta rap and listening to too much tribe), and the speed wars.... Fast rapping has kinda fallen out in recent years, and its kind of a good thing because nobody could really pull it off without sounding like shit, with like a few exceptions.

Im kinda happy that LYRICAL ITHICAL MYTHICAL shit is gone. corny. and the fans are the worst.

well... like esch said, the dudes are trying to pull out the craziest 27 syllable word from the thesaurus.

i'd posit that at least they're looking at a thesaurus. trying to do SOMETHING besides "bitch nigga nigga etc". anything but that. sorry guys.

Daylight is one of my favorite songs ever, but I can't get into Aesop at all (other than that song). "Incoherent rappity rap" describes him really well, actually.

Basically what Eschaton is saying is rappity rap is if GZA didn't take 10yrs whittling down his rhymes.

no way. the GZA can actually like, write songs. There are some aspects to his stuff that definitely informed what we think of as rappity rap (abstract lyricism, i guess) but honestly, I would be more ready to blame the emergence of that shit on stuff like Black Star, Big L, Eminem...

i don't think that describing aesop as incoherent is fair. it can be hard to listen to. it's not just gonna pour over your head like a bucket of honey and go in your earholes and make you happy. if you want to get everything that you can out of it you really have to hear it alot and think about it. i realize thats not what most people want out of music, and i dont love it myself anymore, but i think its respectable.

Rappity rap got even less impressive when you realize anyone with rhyming dictionary can do that crap. I think Papoose was the nail in the coffin, really. Alphabetical Slaughter was just....dude, what are you doing? I place a higher value on flow and cadence now. And not like "swag rap" simple rhymes carried by charisma kind of stuff, but actual flow within a beat. That's really the only reason I can still listen to new Eminem anymore.

With all that said, Skelethon has some really good production so I'll still check for some rappity rap every now and then if it sounds like this.

The whole point of the criticism is that pulling big words out of your ass isnt intelligent or impressive songwriting. It's just stringing words together. It's different if you have the charisma and restraint like an MF Doom or Ghostface..... And you can make it work, but most of the time they cant. Part of being a good emcee is being able change your emphasis, show versatility in flow and rhyme scheme, and most of these dudes are just shitting out a dictionary at 256 bpm.

As for the second part, you never elaborate what kind of gangster rappers you're referring to so(name names) so theres no point in addressing it.

i understand the criticism. it's a legit criticism. i mostly agree with the first part of what you typed.

second part.. what kind of gangster rappers? fuck, i dont know. do they still exist? i appreciate gaf hop very much, but i feel like half the stuff that gets posted up on here is some trunk muzixxx how big is yo dick nigga type shit. which is bad imo.

To be honest, you're really wrong. All you would need to do is look at the top 10 lists for gafhoppers to know you are conclusively wrong. Oneirology got like what, 2nd in the voting last year and that's pure unadulterated backpack. Just because we spend a couple pages on a Rick Ross or 2 Chainz album doesnt mean that "half" of the stuff is of that nature.

In fact I don't even know what you're referring to really, because this threads AOTY is by and large some shit by The Alchemist or Killer Mike probably. Does that sound like Trunk Muzik to you?

I was all over backpack rap in the late 90s, so I'll answer that too: IMO, the state of mainstream rap after Pac and Big died was abysmal. The Wu fell, the real gangsta rap of the west coast disappeared, and all that was left was Pac wannabes like Ja Rule. At the time, the only thing that was consistently good in hiphop was the underground scene. I think it's pretty easy to dismiss "gangsta rap" in that era, because honestly, it wasnt that good.

Then Kanye released College Dropout and brought the underground and mainstream back together. The only nigga with a Benz and a backpack. That shit was classic.

That's how I remember it, and that's the story I'm gonna tell my children. Don't care if I'm wrong.

I'll cop that story RJT. I bought the Lyricist Lounge double CD when it came out. I even acted like I liked it.

That had some dope songs. How can one hate a song by KRS-One, The Last Emperor and Zack de la Rocha? That and Sound "Evil Dee is on the mix" bombing were classics.

Ok, those kinda sucked (except Universal Magnetic on SB1), but seriously, Soundbombing Vol.2 has to be the best mixtape album ever. That shit was amazing.

i agree. mainstream rap was pretty shitty from like 2000-2008/9 with a few exceptions(Ye, Jay, Outkast). and the underground was producing way better shit than it is now (DOOM, etc).

eschaton.. i'm not writing gaf hop in total off as nonsense rap fans. some of yall have some good taste sometimes. i'm not trying to burn your house down man. just alot of the conversation on here is about shit that i would never care about. like drake vs. whoever. fuck both of those guys. but I KEEP COMING BACK.
