I was all over backpack rap in the late 90s, so I'll answer that too: IMO, the state of mainstream rap after Pac and Big died was abysmal. The Wu fell, the real gangsta rap of the west coast disappeared, and all that was left was Pac wannabes like Ja Rule. At the time, the only thing that was consistently good in hiphop was the underground scene. I think it's pretty easy to dismiss "gangsta rap" in that era, because honestly, it wasnt that good.
Then Kanye released College Dropout and brought the underground and mainstream back together. The only nigga with a Benz and a backpack. That shit was classic.
That's how I remember it, and that's the story I'm gonna tell my children. Don't care if I'm wrong.
