He needs to stop playing it so safe. No one wants another solid release that everyone will forget about the next month. Either go big or sell the fuck out.

Yeah I'd say I weakly enjoy it. He came straight on it but the beat is a little too busy with the tinkly winkly shit in some places. Would have been better if it went all in on the horns.

New Jay Rock sounds like he's trying to make a 2001 B-Side with the hook of a bad Ruff Ryders song. Verses are inconsistent.

That's more or less what Follow Me Home was.

I remember hearing that Jay was gonna surprise people with his new project, that he was gonna take risks and show that he's more than just a gangsta rapper.

...and then he re-enters the conversation with a typical gangsta west coast throwback track.

Disappointing.

Honestly, I don't mind him just doing that. I mean I know we like to hear artists evolve or take their shit in other directions, but there's something to be said about a dude that just likes doing his shit and you enjoy it, bump it for a while and throw the occasional track on a mix.

I mean, I do hope he does more. I really like Jay Rock's music, but if this is the album it's not going to be bad. It's going to be enjoyable, and with all the artists trying shit that doesn't really work out. I'll probably just find it to be a good solid fun listen.

Let's be honest that's way more enjoyable than Kendrick's Self-Love iphone commercial anthem.

The Game said:
To a grow fuckin' man with a bid
Unzipped his pants and I can't tell you what a pig
Me and my sister had different fathers, but I cared, and I loved her
And I'd be lyin' if I said I wasn't scared, when he rubbed her
Tip of his penis on her, she was only 11
How could you ever get a boner?
Even thinkin' about it make me hot as a sauna
Make me wanna pop him like the top on Coronas
But I was scared, ran back to my room, prayed to God
That I was dreamin', can't believe I'm this nigga's semen
Livin' with demons and it'd been that way

But with a boatload of producers, presumably higher budget, and a brand established anything less than an improvement on Follow Me Home is a disappointment.

Same could be said about Kendrick.

Idk is this confirmed as a single on the new album or is this just a street track to build hype?
Not at all the same Kendrick already released his masterpiece and followed up Section 80 in a most triumphant fashion. Kendrick solidified TDE as a brand and set up them up for future success, he did his part from an output standpoint. It's an entirely different situation.

Can't listen yet but the Coli is fully on board, KTT likes it...

Dunno what yall expect from Jay Rock. Sure I want an introspective project that isn't 100% gangsta, maybe we'll get it...but if we get a bunch of west coast anthems instead I'm not gonna complain.

exactly, not every verse will be like money trees
i question how many here actually listened to follow me home vs. basing their expectations off of his performance on GKMC and a couple other features

also did anyone listen that vince staples after all? worth a listen?

ktt and Coli aren't exactly bastions of great critical thought.

It's not about critical thought it's just a quick peek to see if people are feeling it. If dustheads (coli) and soulja girls (ktt) like it, then that bodes pretty well for Jay Rock.

As for the track itself, yea it's not ambitious, but not everything has to be ambitious, it's just a quick banger. It might not even be on his album. It's a decent effort, nothing more nothing less. If y'all expect every TDE one-off to crush the buildings and rewrite the meaning of rap, your expectations are crazy. I do think it's funny he publically made a statement about rethinking the gangsta persona and then dropped a hood anthem type track tho.

It's worth it bc it's short

It's solid, and I enjoyed it, and he raps his ass off

But I won't go back to it most likely

My problem with Jay Rock staying in that late 90s/early 2000s west coast vibe is that he's merely pretty good at it.

Lots of the sounds and ideas on Follow Me Home were derivative and lacked depth. It was a solid 7/10 type effort. Had some real good tracks, but it was lacking outside of a handful of tracks.

At the very least he needs to try and do something a little different sonically, cause I still dig his gangsta shit but these wannabe Dre beats get tired. Something like "Money Trees" or even "Los Awesome" would be a welcome switch up.

Yup I definitely peep forums and twitter to get a general gist of how things are getting received. Lord knows I wouldn't base my own views on forums, it's just to see what's up. I'm still amazed at how negative the response to "i" was. It was almost universally disliked or "meh'd." Don't remember the last time I saw that happen to a big track in real time.

thanks ill give it a listen

also best part about the jay rock beat is the biggie gimme the loot sample
or at least i think i hear it (bom bom)

also after subsequent listens i think it's a good song. above average
but i admit it is very much in his lane

1. PRHYME
2. Dat Sound Good ft. Mac Miller & Ab Soul
3. U Looz
4. You Should Know ft. Dwele
5. Courtesy
6. Wishin’ ft. Common
7. To Me, To U ft. Jay Electronica
8. Underground Kings ft. Killer Mike & Schoolboy Q
9. Microphone Preem ft. Slaughterhouse

Hype for this after seeing the tracklist, except for the song with Ab-Soul which he will inevitably stink up.

Mike WiLL Made It ft. Future & Wiz Khalifa - Pussy Overrated.

The problem here is he can't even do West Coast anthems consistently.

Anyone have a way to contact pickles? I know he's pretty plugged into the music scene here and I've been looking for tickets to a sold out show for like 2 weeks now. Wondering if he knows any places I can come up on a ticket besides Craigslist / ebay / stub hub

Think that Jay Rock is pretty good. May not be part of the album, but either way it's about what I expect. It's predictable, but I don't expect a ton more from Rock. Hopefully the production is a bit different.

I like it though. Yeah, he doesn't do the west coast thing particularly great, but it's solid enough.
