I've only ever thrown a controller in anger due to Shinobi. Punch the floor, slap my thighs, etc. Those aerial sections are so unforgiving. Honestly it's enough to drive someone right into livid rage if you play it enough because Shinobi gives you just enough rope to hang yourself. Just enough badass/satisfaction to keep playing. When you die, it's so easy to be like 'damn, how'd I fuck up like that? Gotta replay this whole level now'. Then you fuck up again when you make it 4 minutes of gameplay past where you were. Rinse and repeat. But somehow you just keep going, because the game is so fucking cool.
There's never any upgrades. The game constantly pushes you forward. The actual gameplay is simultaneously basic and deep, just like it's forebears on early consoles. It's all sheer timing and error management. It's knowing exactly how long you can wall run. The exact amount of lift and distance you get on an aerial dash, and how long to chain them.
