wow. the white octave, i hadn't thought about them in forever. are you from nc?
Hah! I am not. I was just an avid Deep Elm/Cursive fan back in the day. In case you didn't know, Stephen Pederson's new project is Criteria, and it sounds pretty much exactly like The White Octave, only a bit cleaner. I listen to both bands on a very regular basis. :lol

He's on Saddle Creek now.

Edit: I'll post mine as a digital mix once I get the physical ones out, if people are interested.

Posted 2 of my three away today, charmicarmicat and Subliminal will receive theirs very shortly, elseanio you'll have to wait until tomorrow I'm afraid because the CD didn't burn properly (shitty computer). As a bonus I had to burn these to CD RW because that's all I had, so if you don't like it you can erase it and fill it up with, i dunno, loads of euro trance or something, whatever tickles ya ;)

btw danielijohnson, I love your cover. Way to raise the bar to unattainably high levels dude! :lol

Any Physical mixers not get their assignments yet? Everyone should have theirs, but taylor910 PMed me and said he hadn't gotten them yet...

Some help for a newbie please guys!

What file size should I be aiming around for a digital mix entry and is there a recommended bitrate? (Never gone as far as uploading a mix before).

I'm churning it out now on the highest bitrate allowed by my software (320), I think it's going to come to around 125MB. Is that reasonable or too extravagant?

Hmmm, 125 is maybe a liiiiiitle big, but really it's up to you. 320 is great quality so any audiophiles should be happy, I usually just encode in 192 or 256 personally, I can only really tell a rip when it's as low as 128. Publish and be damned, I wanna hear more new (to me) music!

Ok thanks. I've redone one at 256 and I'm uploading it now. Going to take a while due to my slow ass connection.

I must say, I've only listened to the first two songs but your mix is incredible. Thanks for taking the time to mix it all in one track, transitions so far are silky smooth.

Also, props to kitchenmotors. I enjoyed yours immensely as well. Those are the only ones I've gotten to...not sure how my school looks on me downloading this shit on their connection. Perhaps I'll take a trip to starbucks when the digital stuff is all up. :lol

Haha that one transition is the best one in the mix. The tracks just fell so perfectly for one another. It's all downhill from there :lol

Phobophile's mix scared the hell out of me this morning during my workout. I'd forgotten that it was on my MP3 player and when Blut Aus Nord came exploding out of the headphones immediately after Stevie Nicks, I almost fell over. :lol Never been a fan of black metal, but y'know, it's surprisingly easy to exercise to.

Nothing w/ Tristeza and Appleseed Cast can suck. You didn't hop on at Sagarmartha did you? It's an okay album, but probably their weakest since End of the Ring Wars. I miss cobra dude.

EDIT So I don't sound like a jerk: You picked my absolute favorite song on the album!! One of their best songs since the plethora of amazing on Two Conversations.

Haha, thanks. But no, I got on at Peregrine and then worked my way back from there. I didn't know they released a new one till last october. If it's not the song selection it's probably the arrangement of the songs.:lol

edit: Wow, Duck Sauce is incredible. I must get more of their stuff..or not, only can find it on UK itunes. Damn.

Great mix. The Mountain Goats are one of my favorite bands ever. :D

Hopefully I did a better job with this one than the one I made for my ex :lol

Andrew, I love how your stuff is all properly tagged with the genre, year, track numbers and artwork. Reminds me of, well.... me. :lol I'm really anal about my music library and all that stuff, especially artwork.

Anyway, your review will come soon, as will others, like Cosmic Bus. It's just taking me a while to listen to everyone's stuff. It's a lot of music. :p

I see everyone with similar tastes are circle jerking themselves, but did anyone join with the intention of getting music they don't ordinarily listen to? It's a given for me and that's why I signed up.

Actually yes!

I normally don't like metal and I downloaded your mix to see if you could convince me otherwise. I haven't had time to give it a listen yet, though.

I was playing perryfarrell's jazz mix this afternoon and it simply reinforces my desire to listen to more of the genre. The first half, give or take, is positively wonderful; as it transitioned into more avant territory, my attention span wained somewhat, but I plan on revisiting the mix soon to see how I feel about those later tracks the second time around.

I don't really listen to music at all, so that is primarily my reason for joining in on this. I'll be marathoning through a couple of them in the upcoming minutes.

Oh, I'm sending out a CD of pop music. Ha. I am fully expecting hateful backlash. :P

I thought about sending a CD of only Lady GaGa, but I'll refrain.

Ditto. Ah well, it's all in good fun though. :D

Ok, getting ready to mail my mix out!

(if you can't read, click for the full image)

I'll give the physical people a few days to enjoy it (or hate it), and I'll post a digital copy in like a week or so. :D

To the people uploading digital mixes, please stop using rapidshare, it's almost worthless, most times I try to dl them they will not work. I really wanna hear your mixes though!

Well, it's always nice to hear good music you don't usually listen too, but it's even better to find bands that you'll love but never heard before. A little of both is best, imo.

Hey Skittleguy, we both used a cover of Police Story! I'm just listening to your mix now as I'm starting work, when it came on it gave me a good laugh. Enjoying it very much so far, even though it sounds like everyone on the mix has a big beard (this is neither a good nor bad thing, just an observation to the state of modern indie music).

I started asking this question once before and decided last minute that I didn't care enough to hit "submit".

But I find myself wondering again......

GAF crucifies anyone that talks about pirating software or videos.
Yet... this thread is promoting the exact same thing and no one seems to care?

What gives?

Just been trying to finalise my mix today, it's an autobiographical account of my musical life through the medium of mix-tapery. It's like a discursive essay, explaining why it is I like to rock. I'm going to work on the artwork today and aim to get it sent out mid-week. Digi-version to follow shortly afterwards.

It's been great fun making this though, I hope my recipients enjoy it! btw, charmicarmicat, you live just down the road from me, I'm from Aldershot. Tiny world!

Got yours in the post over the weekend :) Haven't had a chance to listen yet as I've not been back long after a weekend away, but I'm looking forward to it. Got a couple of tracks i already know, any mix ending with New Noise cannot be bad! Had a feeling you would put the hometown boys Reuben on there too hehe :D

This thread does nothing of the sort. No one here is promoting music piracy. No one is offering full albums for download. The mixes posted here are simply an outlet for posters to find new music, which means money spent on albums, shows and merch.

Lars, is that you? You cheeky bastard.

I just got back from mailing out my mixes at the post office. Man, I love the automated postage machine. I'll give the mix recipients some time to listen to it before uploading a digital version.

Cool man, I hope you enjoy it! To be honest I was starting to get a little worried about how it was going to be received. From what's been posted so far it seems only me and Phobophile have got rocking songs (and Phobophile's makes mine look like a CD full of Sufjan in comparison), everyone else is going with the checked shirts and neckbeards brigade (which I'm quite happy with too, but I just wanted to rock this time!).

And yeah dude, gotta have Reuben representing! Was a very difficult choice seeing as they've done loads of songs about rock and rocking, but I thought their breakthrough single was the way to go.

Nobody is getting what they've asked for. They're listening to somebody else's choices which usually consists of 1 song per artist. If they already know the song, then it makes no difference. If they don't know it and they like it, what's the worst that could happen? I imagine in most cases they'll want to check out the artist more. Legally. Mix tapes have been around for decades. They're just a way of spreading a love of music and informing others of bands they may not have heard. To use mixtape spreading as a way of stealing the music you like... well, you couldn't find a more inefficient way.

I guess ill eventually post my mix online, but I've got to give my recipients a nice timed exclusive :D

should be sending mine out tomorrow.

Oh. So it's only stealing if you get the whole album. Now I understand.
If I share Lord of the Rings - Return of the King, but NOT the trilogy it's ok? I mean... I'm simply posting it to give people the opportunity to see a movie they might not have otherwise seen.

In most cases? Really?
Mix tapes have been around for decades. Agreed.
That still doesn't mean they are legal.
And again... just because it's inefficient, doesn't mean it's a legal method of distribution.

I'm simply asking the question from a legal perspective.
Sharing game backups - Illegal (GAF says burn in hell).
Sharing roms - Illegal (GAF says burn in hell).
Sharing movies - Illegal (GAF says burn in hell).
Sharing music - Illegal (GAF says "Hi, let's make a thread to do it.)

From the Joel Tenenbaum case:
During direct examination, Tenenbaum was asked a simple question by the labels' counsel: "on the stand now, are you admitting liability for downloading and distributing all 30 sound recordings that are at issue and listed on Exhibits 55 and 56 of the exhibits?" His simple "yes" answer was enough to hand the labels a victory on the question of liability.

Additionally, I'm the first to say I like mixtapes. As a DJ I gave them out all the time, so I'm not trying to appear holier than thou. I just find their inclusion on this website quite hypocritical and I don't quite understand why it's tolerated, so I finally broke down and asked the question.

The answers just don't really provide a clear reason.
I'm done. Not really out to piss people off. Just hoped to talk about it a bit. :D

My mix is finished and copies should be going out this week. I tried to make it nice and efficient.

I'm not trying to make a case for Mix Tapes legality, merely to say that I think there is a huge difference between someone seeking out an album online to steal, and someone downloading a random mix tape. Legally they may both me similar, but morally I think the difference is quite apparent and I wouldn't call someone a hypocrite for listening to a mix tape and being against downloading entire albums and your music collection for free. Nor do I think it is hypocritical for GAF to allow a mix tape thread but punish people who openly admit to pirating movies and albums.

_rt_, i don't want to sound like a prick, but piss off.

Because of these threads I have purchased many albums and even seen a few concerts of bands I would have otherwise not seen or even heard of.

There is no impetus for anyone to buy a game if they already have a copy of it or a ROM. If someone gets one song, many times, that person will feel compelled to buy an album or better from an artist. I know I have.

Hey Beast, did you get my PM from a couple of days ago? I deleted the PM you sent me with the addresses on like an idiot, could you send them to me again? Cheers.
