GAF phenomena you don't get

In all of our varied GAF subcultures, in-jokes, cliques and recurring topics, which baffle you the most?

For me, wrestling topics. I usually just avoid them, but sometimes I click on one when I don't recognize the name of a wrestler in a thread. I don't mind them, but I never understood the appeal, either.

And just to be clear, this isn't "two minutes hate." If anythign, it's "2 minutes curiosity." Non-antagonistic posts, please.
 
What's so confusing about wrestling. Its a male soap opera with incredible athletic artistry. I'm actually more curious about men who DON'T like wrestling. Not saying you should still be a big fan of it .. but at some point in your life, you should have followed it. It's like watching Three Stooges or saturday morning cartoons. It's just a part of human nature.


Nothing in GAF really surprises me. Oh wait, there was a recent thread where people professed thier love for Andrew WK. WTF?

Yeah, I followed it as a child. Then I grew up. :)

I think the same goes for many guys.

I've tried to think of explanations, but they all seems to come down to him being an idiot. Perhaps there's nothing more to it.

I don't understand the general consensus that Nintendo fans are all politcally affiliated with the right.

It's bullshit. Just because Nintendo is a financially conservative company does not mean all nintendo employees and fans are political conservatives (yes, I've heard this argument before). And I know there's a lot of Nintendo fans at gaf who happen to be republicans (Olimario, Link, etc... I happen to be democratic, and am pretty damn liberal in my beliefs). But just because there's somewhat of a correlation at GAF that says Nintendo fans are republicans doesn't mean it's a universal truth. :lol

It's cathartic - helps them purge 'the ghey' out of their system to make even more room for that warm democracy-loving heterosexual feeling. If you don't like wrestling, you love terrorism!
 
my opinion about a movie/game/book/type of music/artist is better than yours!

I like talking about stuff but there is a point when you just have to agree to disagree.

I've reached a very similar conclusion, so I guess I do get it now.

Drinky wasting energy on sub-standard DS bashing. Maybe there are parallels to be drawn to the above? :P

Come to think of it, most of the things that bug me here can be traced back to some variation of retardation .... seen from my point of view. Hey, that's kind of fun to say out loud - variation of retardation.

Maybe it's contageous. Kurt thought so.

It's 4+ hours hours a week of varied, interesting characters scheming and fighting each other, and there are never any repeats. Often times the stories are crap and have no internal logic, but that's what happens given the circumstances. At worst it's embarassing yet still interesting, at best it's more exciting and suspenseful than any movie, as you've had many many hours to "know" the wrestlers.

I don't get the gay connection. WWE wrestling emphasizes brawling and impact moves which don't look gay at all. The wrestlers are often near naked and oiled up, but that's because most of them have better bodies than 90% of the general population. I admire their bodies and become more interested in improving mine.

I've never followed wrestling. I've always thought it was incredibly stupid. I'm not sure what part of sweaty men performing fake moves set around soap opera storylines is supposed to be appealing.

So yes, the wrestling clique on GAF is something that I don't get.
 
- Following box office profits as if you have a share in the company or something.
- Wrestling. What. The. Fuck. Homoerotic male soap opera? No thanks.
- Videogames. Who actually plays these things?

Back to the topic...I really don't get Penny Arcades. They are not even close to being funny.
 
Sales threads. The monthly NPD, okay, I can see there being a thread for that. But there's daily Japanese sales, daily UK sales, daily Pakistani sales, plus not just one (humongous) NPD thread, but a mid-month NPD prediction thread, and 20 various "Where's the NPD?"/"NPD may arrive tommorrow" threads... People seem way more concerned around here with what the games sell than actually playing and talking about them, it's ridiculous.
 
I'd agree somewhat with the wrestling thing. I had no idea so many guys were into that. I definitely think there's a wierd homoerotic undertone to it.
 
Re: wrestling. I think I may have been too old for it when it hit big in the 80's.

Oh, Penny Arcade threads. Now that I know about the site (from GA) I see no reason to read the cartoons in a thread here, followed with 20 posts saying "it's not funny."

Except that I still look at the threads, and recently I said it wasn't funny either. I still don't get it, my own involvement included.

Anime - Like the original poster sometimes I'll accidently wander in to a topic because I don't know what the title is all about. Once in a while I'll see people gushing over it in a gaming setup post or something, but other then that I stay away.

I guess wrestling interest also seems a bit odd to me.

Those are the only things I can think of that aren't antagonistic.
 
Haha, yeah, we'll see if "mod for the people" Bishop brings down the stick on Drinky Crow. Somehow though, I doubt it. I remember him banning me for asking if wrestling was fake. It was just an honest question.... :lol
