I've been going back and forth on hopping over to HK next month. You might've just convinced me to pull the trigger.

You totally should! Hop over from where? I might actually be there at the end of this month if I get my passport back in time, a friend wants me to come chill for the weekend.

Apparently I've only uploaded 3 photos to Flickr from my various trips to Hong Kong, I'll get my hard drives out and upload some when I get a chance. For now here is a street shot from there a few years ago:

Today I set out to shoot the Shanghai skyline from a new location and my goal was to also find a different approach to how I shoot it. I'm most pleased with this photo, a reflection in the reflection at the new marina, then flipped vertically.

I had hoped there would be a nice sky and some decent clouds because yesterday the sky was super blue and clear due to the typhoon just passing through over the few days before. Unfortunately we were back to smog and had a pretty shitty sunrise.

Here is another shot of me trying to do something different with the skyline:

And here is a more traditional one:

It's been a good while since I've posted so here is some of my recent work.

Nice work, I like the first one with the girl flying and the baseball one as well.. he stick his tongue out on every pitch?

To keep with the theme of fitness and badass girls, here are a couple shots I took for a pole fitness instructor to help promote her new studio.

Korea, so I wouldn't be spending too much on a plane ticket. Have a friend from college living there, but his apartment is pretty tiny so I'd need to look into hotels or hostels (which don't seem too expensive). Only reason I haven't made up my mind yet is because a friend wants me to go with him to Malaysia in September, and plane tickets for that aren't nearly as affordable. More than likely buying the HK tickets around the beginning of next week though, I've found some for as low $260 round trip (has anyone flown Air India?), and for that price it's almost stupid not to do so.

I've never flown air india, 260 is a pretty good price though! Does spring air fly from Korea to Hk? They are cheap as hell usually, I have flown with them around China and internationally as well for absolute rock bottom prices. They have been delayed more often than not when I've flown them though so if time matters they might not be best choice. Also j found some of my HK pics today... Not the ones I was looking for but oh well, I don't wanna overwhelm the thread with all my photos so I'll share them later (and hope to find other ones I took as well in the meantime).

I haven't posted any pictures in awhile. I used to edit photos on my work computer which had a perfectly calibrated monitor, and now I don't have that as I've left that job. My pictures look different on every display I have now and it's so frustrating. I need to get a new job and a new monitor.

Here's some pictures that may or may not look overly washed out or overly saturated, idk

I've had a lot of fun taking pictures of the local birds with remote shutter.

I'm thinking about getting a new camera. Been using a Nikon D90 with default lens and a good 50mm lens for about 6 years now and it's been great, but I feel like it's been breaking down over the last year or two.

Are there better DSLRs out now that would be a nice upgrade from a D90? Something $1,000 or under?

If you're looking for something like the d90, you should look at the successors. D7000/D7100? Or a second hand D600?

um, in short, yes.

Just about every camera from the last year or two are going to be leaps and bounds better than the d90, photographically speaking and feature wise. I would look at the d7*** personally.

Where is this? I'm so envious of people having access to waterfall. Everything's dried up around here cuz of drought. lol
Northern sweden, don't be too envious. The few locations we have with waterfalls are frozen solid 9+ months a year lol.

Hello, PhotoGAF! Long time, no see. I had a baby nine months ago, and all I've been taking are baby photos (which my wife and I are choosing not to publish online), so I've been a bit quiet on the photography front lately.

I see you've all levelled up several times in the past year! Some incredible stuff in this thread.

In any case, I couldn't resist this sunset last night.

Glad to see everyone's doing so well!

Been going back to this spot a lot the past week or so. Brand new marina/shopping area finally open to the public just at the end of my road. Construction has been going for so long it's nice to get back there and check it out, and it's super empty and peaceful unlike most places in Shanghai. Hope it stays this way but I am doubtful, as people start to find it it will become overrun.

Bought my plane ticket. August 24-28, although I get there mid afternoon on the 24th and leave the morning of the 28th, so I'm really only there for about 3 1/2 days. Trying to decide what I want to see. Thinking of devoting one day to the fishing village that has buildings on stilts (was reading about it yesterday) and the big buddha, one day to Ocean World (simply because I really, really want to see a giant panda in real life), and then one day to some streets and markets (maybe fit in Victoria Peak on this day, or try to fit it in the first night).

Ocean Park is alright... don't waste an entire day though if you can help it. Try not to miss going to the peak! The view is really spectacular. Wake up early one day or go at dusk, fit it in somehow.

Noooo! It's my sanctuary. :p

How did you avoid having star trails on those 30s exposures? Whenever I try that I see a bunch of little tails on the stars, and it's a big reason why I don't try more shooting of it.

I don't think 30s is long enough to see star trails, at least from my experience. Which lens did you try long exposure with? I think a wider angle helps

God damn those are gorgeous...

Thanks! worth the 1 hour drive to get there

It definitely is, I've had this myself with some shots I took with (I think) the Canon 24-105L.

I wonder if location and direction might play a part in this - if you zoom in on the images it looks as though there's tiny amount of movement in the stars but nowhere near what I saw on my efforts.

yeah location def. has to do with it too. I'm in hawaii so the star declination angle should be lower than the mainland (lower angle means star trails will show up easier I think). According to this calculator, a 24mm at 20 degree will show visible star trails after 44s. There will be movement regardless but it shouldn't visible unless you're looking at a 100% zoom.

I can never seem to hold my camera straight. Does anyone have any advice on how to try and fix that?

Examples:

You're not alone on that - if your camera has gridlines in live view or the viewfinder you can use those as a reference. Some cameras have a level built in that's available in live view mode, or if on a tripod you can use a level (that a lot of tripod heads include).

As a last resort, just correct it in post.

Are all your photos rotated about the same amount and in a consistent direction? If you have a DSLR, it's possible that the mirror is misaligned causing the viewfinder image to be ever so slightly crooked.

This has to be a link, rather than an embed, because it's a panoramic shot. It's the FIRST panoramic shot I've tried before, and in a lot of ways it was a test more than anything. Ultimately, I'm not sure if it was successful in much other than teaching me that a 34,000x6000 image will, in fact, reliably crash Lightroom upon attempts to edit it. There were a few stitching errors that Lightroom came up with, and I attempted to clean up in PS, but... well I don't have too much PS experience.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Just got some really old film developed, and although i'm fustrated with how grainy the images have come out when I scan them I'm still really happy with how they look printed. Because it was for a day trip it wasn't really focused as much on what I was photographing so it's a shame I only have a couple that I feel are any good.

I desperately want to go to Hyde Park here in London to catch pictures of the parrots though, but I don't know how to lure them in! Do I just carry a ton of seeds with me and hope for the best or is there a way to get decent pictures of wildlife without scaring them off? In a park like this one there are so many people i'm worried I wouldn't be able to get pictures of them fast enough :(

There is no locking remote shutter for the Sony NEX series of cameras, so I built my own out of duct tape and drove out to try and do some star trails last night, but I ended up getting clouded out unexpectedly. So here's another shot I managed. I was really hoping the fireflies would pop a lot more near the creek, but they appeared to get camera shy shortly after I started the exposure.
