Here's another shot of mine. This was taken a few years back, and on auto unfortunately, as I could have taken down the ISO to 100, but back then I didn't know better. Still, it's one of my best shots of an animal, and next month I expect to share shots of wild snakes as well.

RAAWRRRR!

Reminds me it's almost the best season to go to the zoo and take photos there.

Love that shot. The only thing I'd personally change is make the background more green or blue, so there's contrast from the tiger, as now they're kind of the same colour scheme and blend in, instead of make the tiger pop. Could be just me though.

Looking forward to some snakes! Love snakes.

You monster.

I also love toads. And hamster/bunny's teeth when they open their mouth. And raccoon's hands. I've literally taken close up photos of raccoon hands... somewhere... must do it again.

(not my image, but would love to take one like that)

My girlfriend finds it weird that I find raccoon's cute.

There is nothing wrong with taking photos in auto or semi auto modes. Manual mode is useful for specific scenarios like in a studio or for night photography, but it just slows you down in a lot of other situations. If you prefer it that is fine too, just don't feel like it is a necessity. Pretty much all my photos are taken in aperture priority mode in general use, or shutter priority for wildlife.

Some recent photos.

wonder if the APi is still free. I just use the lightroom plugin to publish straight to photostream.

Now that i'm 500px as well, I find it amusing that 99/100 of the 'popular' people pics are basically softcore porn. Classy

I do find a lot of that stuff rather tasteless. I don't know if I'm egotistical or just have odd taste, but I actually prefer the subtlety of my stuff over the more popular portraiture.

They're technically great, but ya it's an artistic choice. It's like having Innaritu direct a porno.

I noticed that too, and wanted the background to contrast the tiger but I have no idea how to do that. Maybe I need to do that in Photoshop? Or can it be done in Camera Raw? Is there a marking tool in Lightroom, so I can mark the background only?

I'm gonna play around with the auto modes now as well. Going through my book about all the modes on the camera, very interesting.

So I'm back in the USA and have finally had some time to catch up and upload pretty much all my interesting photos from the past 2 months or so to flickr. Here is a variety of stuff from wandering around Asia. Apologies if you've seen these on Instagram already lol.

Hmm I can think of so many ways to do that. Really depends which one works best for you. But just to be sure I'd go with the RAW in Lightroom, you can try with the Split toning, set the highlights to more yellow tone, shadows to blue-ish and play around with the sliders.

If it doesn't work, you can use the spot tool, upper right on the develop menu and just use it to brush all over the background (or tiger) and that way you isolate them and play around with the tones from that menu :)

double post, sorry!

Has anyone shot bands backstage before? I got a really cool deal to go shoot a band backstage and I've been allowed to bring my light setup. Ideally I'd like to have two umbrellas, but I'm thinking I can work with a long tube on one flash for spotlight in the background and just one umbrella on the side for more dramatic effect and less space, as I've been told the backstage is tiny and very busy.

I've shot on tiny and busy places before, so that's a plus, but I don't know if there'll be other photographers there... I went to a fashion show once and that was like a battle royale for photographers, would rather avoid that situation.

As you can see, it looks very different and ordinary.

I will try this!

I know you are new and everything and learning post and experimenting, but the reason I asked is because at least imo, the edited picture looks really bad and barely even resembles a photograph since its edited so much. The original picture I think looks a lot better. Maybe try to get the photo you want in the camera then make only minor adjustments in post if possible. It's all subjective and you can do what you want with your photos but those are my thoughts. I think when most people first start out they overdo things in post, I know I definitely did as well.

Or watch loads of tutorials online. Even about stuff you already know. I usually go in bed and watch video tutorials on my phone while falling asleep lol. You always learn something new watching other people do things differently. I personally like super editted photos, but it's extremely hard to make it look 'natural'. I mean, the whole point of good cg is to look like real life, but better and for you to achieve that you know exactly what these things look like in real life.

I do agree with you. And I have noticed I use post effects a lot and too much for my taste.

That one picture were super dull and boring to me, so instead of making it look natural, I wanted it to resemble a poster more where only black and red could be seen.

But I do want to edit my photos less. You're totally right about that. And it's something I should be aware of.

Only Flickr Uploader. Not the whole Flickr.

Point being that this is a sign though.
People don't just make decisions like that if their business is going well. The way I see it, this is a sign they're getting too pressured by Yahoo to make money, which means they're a sinking ship.

Yeah at first just tweak the basics like exposure and white levels and stuff like that when you start out. Then start watching some videos to learn more about some of the advanced stuff. I didn't really start fucking about with clarity and vibrance and stuff like that till I watched a video about what that stuff actually does. Then I didn't start pulling down my highlights till I think Brerwolf said that he does that. Don't just randomly start messing about with stuff...well yeah you could, it's part of the learning process, but just don't go hog wild in post until you have more of an understanding of it. It'll also help you start figuring out what you want the picture to actually look like in the long run. Post is fun to learn, it's actually a little therapeutic for me. (I hope koriandrr doesn't scream at me for the wording in this post again)

Yeah. I do have a teacher who showed me what every single thing does. He have been working with for the past 40 years so I'm glad to have him around daily as well.

It's just so much fun to play around with everything heh. I'll try and constrain myself.

Yeah I mean I'll admit that I go crazy with it at times too though, but it's just so much fun seeing what the image turns into.

You are right that photo isn't super interesting but it's not terrible either. I personally think it looks way better without the edit. Maybe bring down the shadows just a little bit and tweak the saturation again just a little bit, but the edit as you first posted is pretty bleh to me. The shadows are completely black, the sky is an unnatural color... Everything about it is just not good. The original picture to me is at least a real and natural looking scene. I kind of prefer realism though too, if you look at my photos you'll see that. Others in here prefer super processed and abstract kind of stuff. So it's all personal taste.

I was thinking he could bring down the highlights, up the contrast and maybe boost some of the clarity. Touching up the saturation would help too. Going over to black and white would be interesting as well.

Oh yeah lots that he could do, I was just suggesting based on the edit he made if he still wanted a similar effect to what he got. He pulled those shadows and blacks way down and killed everything in the darker end of the spectrum, then I guess saturated the hell out of it to get that deep red. I'm not sure exactly lol never really edited a photo quite like that before. It'd be nice to retain some of those details that he lost though.

What don't you like about B&W? I usually turn a couple of shots into B&W after my shoots. They take on a life of their own in that format.

I actually love black and white, but most of my photography ends up using either colored lighting, or complementary colors in order to create contrast.

but i mean the whole flickr ;) because it's not going to be better. so many good photographers already aren't using it anymore or just left (when i just look at the people i followed).

Well this might explain why my followers numbers keep fluctuating.

Very interesting feedback I'll take with me.

In my opinion this is a really decent book to understand a little more. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0817439390/?tag=neogaf0e-20

But I will echo everyone else, shooting makes you better, I would like to think my photography has improved over the years lol.

edit: must be nice to have those kind of contacts lol
I found the 4th edition. I guess it's the same book but with a new cover.

So aside from Flickr, what other platforms are there that are free?

Also they NEED to have a Lightroom plugin because like fuck am I going to manually upload shit.

That's never really bothered me. I usually just edit everything and then just upload stuff when I'm done. Since I've been a lot more selective and not uploading 85 damn photos at a time anymore I'm usually fine with it.
