GAF Photography Thread of 2016

That's never really bothered me. I usually just edit everything and then just upload stuff when I'm done. Since I've been a lot more selective and not uploading 85 damn photos at a time anymore I'm usually fine with it.

My thing is I don't want to export all the photos, wait for that, then export from my HDD to the service. Much nicer to just have Lightroom manage it. Especially nice because I tend to make changes to photos later on down the road, touching up my contrast/colors/whatever/etc, or adding location tags, shit like that, and then Lightroom will automatically update all of the Flickr photos for me. That would be a HUGE PAIN to do manually.

Oh ok, yeah, once I'm done I'm done. There's some stuff I'd like to touch up again, but that's ok.

Yeah just last week I added location tags to about 80 photos or so. Would've been a bitch to reupload manually. That's why any photo service I go on, I want the same Lightroom integration.

I'd *also* like one where people comment more and give ideas. I want to get better at shooting haha, there's soooooo much I can learn, and I need to figure out that special something that'll help make my photos better.

I don't think I care too much for location tags, especially given the fact that I just walk around and randomly take pictures. They'd just all say "somewhere in Manhattan."

I use Google maps to pinpoint my photos. :) Suprisingly accurate! Can just match up the scenery with the photos and then tag the location. It's a pain in the ass though, and definitely made easier if I do it the first time around though.

I try to give feedback here as much as I can...I feel like it's pretty much the best place I've found for constructive criticism. Posting on 500px every comment you get is some variant of "awesome composition" then people begging for you to check their crap. Flickr doesn't get many comments at all (for me anyway, not sure really how the social aspects even work over there), and Instagram is super social and I get plenty of comments but it's not constructive criticism on the actual photography usually.

For getting ideas I think the best way is just to look at lots of other people's photos and find photogs that you like... also keep on shooting. Experiment with all kinds of different variables and see what happens. I mostly shoot street stuff but I still try to find models, shoot events, do landscapes, macro, whatever I can find time for. Best way in my opinion to get better and to get new ideas. Maybe shooting macro of a flower will give you some sort of inspiration or idea for shooting some minute detail of your car in a new way, or of a model. That sort of thing.

I'm with you though I do wish that I could get more real feedback on my work, if anyone knows another community for that please share it.

On another topic, I mentioned a few pages back pixsy.com and trying to track down people using your photos without permission. I submitted two cases, basically they said they won't be able to do much in my particular case, because the companies using my photos are in China. But again if anyone wants to try and track down where their photos are being used across the internet and try to get them taken down or even some money then give that site a shot. I'd be interested in if anyone else has any success with it.

I can barely remember where I've been 3 week ago. I get lost at times stepping out of subways, lol, I'm horrible. Yesterday I got lost getting to a subway, a subway I was at on Saturday.

I got a 70-300mm lens today, so now I'm definitely ready for that Miss Philippines show. I will try it out in the coming days, and try not to change too much on my photographies.

Yeah, it is nice to get the comments in here. I suppose, I've got a few of you I've followed, I'll start commenting on the photos, what I like/don't like etc, since I see them all haha, and maybe you guys will do the same for me.
Though I know not all photos I post on there are quite in good taste.

Part of why I love photography is honestly, my memory of photos I've taken supercedes my own regular memory -- I can remember the moment I've shot every photo, what I was doing, what I was thinking. At least, all the photos that are good enough to keep anyway.

I've seen your flickr feed lol.

I've seen your flickr feed lol.

Hey I flag them as NSFW!
Even if sometimes they don't work as intended.

EDIT: Jaded, I'm going through your most recent photos, and commenting what I feel about them. Take them with a pinch of salt though! I'm not exactly an experienced street photographer, but maybe I can help out a bit.

Don't worry I don't mind at all. Though with the first one you commented on I was focusing on the ironing board and to the right of me was a rather congested sidewalk so I worked with what I had. Nothing fucks up a shot like getting told to move or being conscious about being in a person's way.

I use google photos, lightroom, and flickr.

When I plug my camera in everything get's synced to google photos (i make tea or something while it's working lol). When it's done, it automatically syncs back to my computer in google drive/googlephotos. at that point I do an 'add' import in lightroom. I flag any edits that I want to post and then through them into the photostream in the flickr plugin and sync, and it's done. I am using extra bandwidth and time to sync everything to google photos and download them again, but I like the automatic nature of it.

Will that flickr lightroom plug in cost money now as well?

I honestly don't know if metadata edits I make get synced back to google photos, I'll have to check on that.

So I touched up some of the shots H3xAntistyle suggested:

DSC_1614 by Marcus Beasley, on Flickr
These are probably the most changed, some others I just left alone cause I didn't want to go too extreme with post and others just didn't agree with me. Halal cart is pretty much a staple of Manhattan, if I didn't want it in the shot it wouldn't be there.

Hey man I do street stuff too and need feedback! lol just messing..

I never check out other people's photos on flickr it's always been more of just a storage box for me to put photos in and be able to share here on GAF easily. I find stuff more on Instagram 500px and blogs that sort of thing. Now that I know you've got some NSFW stuff though I'll have to head over there to see :p

Sad to say it's not exactly what you think.

That metal figure looks AWESOME now.

And yeah, I figured it might be there for a reason, but its positioning in the frame made it feel like it was accidental, so I'd say next time try figuring out a way to make it more... intentional looking?

The sky in the second one also looks a LOT better. I just can't help but feel like the building on the left is almost in the way though. T-T

Also yes, quite detailed indeed. It's quite fun posing them and trying to come up with creative ideas. If I'll be honest, the two hobbies feed into each other... I get more figures to use my camera on, and then I'll buy macro lenses to take photos of them with! X_x

In hindsight I could've just crossed the god damn street to get more of the sky in there, but I was lazy...only to walk around for maybe another hour because I got lost trying to find a subway station. You enjoy the hobby so it makes sense. I wonder what your next figure is going to be.

As I was scrolling down, I thought "That would look much better in black and white", and then you confirmed that I was right.
I usually like doing both of certain things. Shooting this thing was borderline impossible cause there was like no light. Didn't get a decent shot till I started messing around with exposure setting on my camera and stopped caring about what my light meter was saying and just cranked up some more shutter speed. Though I probably got lucky cause I was a bit persistent.

Had some time to take a few test shots at work yesterday and earlier today of my Vivitar Series 1 70-210 lens. Here's a few:

The one thing I don't like about it is the visible chromatic aberration. If you look at the last two pics I posted, it's pretty visible on the water droplets and the edges of the tree branches. It's not that terrible imo, but it's kinda disappointing that it's there.

That said, I freakin' love it. I've got a Sigma telephoto that covers about the same focal range and while it does take some good pics, this one is just a miles ahead because it's super duper sharp compared to the Sigma. Plus, the Vivitar max aperture is f/2.8 whereas the Sigma is at f/3.5, so while it's not much of a jump... the sharpness, the IQ and the fast capabilities of the Vivitar trumps it easily.

One more from testing the Xpan. Film was Kodak Portra 400 metered @ 200.

Damn that's great!

Yall like Lego photos yeah?

BTW, the ridiculously huge (like seriously it's huge) Orthanc Tower was made by a fellow Gaffer, who was the one that alerted me to Brickworld even happening in my area.

I don't quite agree with you here. I think, due to the monochromatic nature of the image I don't think it does make much of a difference whether it's black and gold or black and white.

Remember kids, before you go cleaning up your Hard drive and make it all nice and tidy, don't delete your Lightroom catalog. Oh, and all the backups with it because apparently Lightroom puts them in the same damn folder.
