I'd appreciate any feedback you guys could offer up. Most of my stuff is here: https://500px.com/liamriley

Is there an advantage to posting from Flickr over 500px?

Bring out that jawline a little more dude. His neck and chin almost seem to blur together. Other than that I like your shots!

A few more from last weekend, all in Somerset, England. One day I'll revisit some of these locations, especially the field ones, and try and get more interesting light.

Getting close to ordering the new 100-400L >_< Can't afford but want so much.

Dude these look stunning.

God I miss England

Wtf dude!? Take these out of the thread and put them in a magazine where they belong.

Great stuff

Thanks - yeah it is a really beautiful place at times. So many people from within the UK don't realise how lucky they are.

Also, thanks :) I honestly don't know how to go about getting stuff in magazines. I setup a website earlier this year (click one of the images to go there) hoping I'd get a few sales but I've had zero interest so far.
I don't want to become a pro but it would be quite nice to get some extra income!

I'm actually from the UK (living in Sydney now), and whenever I go back I wonder how the hell did I not appreciate any of this natural beauty! (probably because it rains too much for me to care lol).

Here's a shot from the Lake District I took a few years before I left:

Is that Derwentwater? I went there for the first time last year, it rained so much I couldn't see anything! Nice shot.

Bought a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 last week and took for a spin at a concert last Saturday.
Still have a lot of pics to go through, but here are a few samples straight from the camera (just resized them, which made them a bit soft o_O)

I'll get the rest of the pics up by the end of the week

Did a graduation "shoot" this week, here's a few that I got permission to post:

Probably my fave one:
These are good, I gave most of mine to my job. I didn't feel like I wanted any...except for that singer I posted earlier. I guess I do need to have an actual conversation regarding usage rights though.

Staff headshots for the company I'm working for right now:

I only got to post these now coz I've been working on updating our homepage for the last month or so... finally got to roll it out earlier this week.

Sidenote, it feels pretty fncking weird to clean up your face in photoshop. I've been doing it to other people, but when I did it to my face, it felt super weird lol.

Yeah, usage rights is kinda important.

Like those headshots above, I've been sitting on them for a few days now, I'm the photog of the company so technically I could post any of our company stuff anytime I want but I don't just because it's just easier that way. There's some stuff on our website that I took from a shoot last month that I'm not posting here yet just because I like to play it safe.

Those grad pics on the other hand, they're a different issue since it's personal stuff. For those pics, I tend to definitely stay away from posting them since they're "private." I say "private" because the entire set is on my Facebook account that all of my friends can see lol.

Well when you guys decide to have the talk with your respective companies, be sure to mention that you'd like to be able to show previous work examples in order to gain new/more work on a freelance basis.

It shouldn't be a problem as long as you aren't trying to sell the photos you snapped on your employer's dime.

The PGA Tour allows me to keep the footage I shoot at their tournaments. I forgot to dump off an entire round to my personal hard drive a couple weeks ago, the Tour threw it on a drive and sent it to me to copy over.

Take no offense with this question, but aren't headshots, especially corporate ones less busy background wise? As well as shot from the middle torso up? With my shoots I might just want to start shooting more and giving a little less to the job. Probably just give the just enough and keep some of the stuff I really like for myself.

Yeah I need to look into this myself. Either pay me instead of your overpriced shoddy freelancers or allow me to use this stuff to promote my work to people with greenbacks. Our photo archivist hates our freelancers cause they can't insert the metadata to save their lives, which makes searching for stuff in the database a pain in the ass. He's perfectly fine with how I do it though. Him and the photo editor have no complaints ever.

Yeah, this is solid advice. The previous company I worked for gave me permission to use my stuff to promote myself as a freelancer but on the grounds of removing or modifying the company materials. I ended up not using them since they lose the cool factor of the pics.

For my current case though, I'm one of the co-founders of the company and also the CD so I'd technically be talking to myself about the usage rights lol.

Joking aside, I do have permission to use company stuff to promote my own at any time really. I just choose to post them a little after they go on our website or after whenever we use them.

Lol none taken. I shot them that way first and cropped them to size. Besides, we're not really the corporate types... we've got the look and feel of a tech startup but in actuality were a branding company. I tried having us look all corporate-y and while the pics were good, it was an awful concept since it didn't really reflect who we were lol.

Ok that makes more sense. If you guys aren't old corporate dudes then don't look like it. Maybe if you do that again you should have props for each person that kind of tie into their interests.

Some photographs from around Queensland in Australia

Cool photos, I really like this one. Are these taken in and around the Gold Coast? I used to live there back in 2004 but I am hopeless at telling one coastline from another.

Was supposed to help photograph the Mermaid Parade, but nope organizers wanted to prioritize free photographers and I wanted a $50 stipend. Well you get what you pay for then.

did you use an ND filter on the first one?

Yes, for most I was using either a10 or 6 stop ND and sometimes the X100T's built in 3 stop ND as well. Grad ND too.

Pretty sure the first one was shot on my lunch break with 16 stops of ND, it was a 3 minute exposure. G
otta find time to shoot when you can :)

Still making my trip Westward across China, though things have changed a bit haha. No more motortricycle (can't remember if I mentioned that before) and now after a few busses and trains to the west we have been invited to stay in a village in Shanxi for a bit, but we are still working out details on how to get there... also that's back the direction we came so will have to double back. Apparently it's quite remote. Also I made a detour for 2 days for some work, had to fly clear down to southwest China, though I didn't take any photos aside from some dog meat soup (and won't share here lol). Anyway this ain't my blog but I know some people have been a little interested in the journey... Here's a few pics I've managed to get around to uploading. Still too far behind. Amazing how busy you can be when you don't have a job.

As someone who have 0 knowledge about the subject can someone tell me how this shot was taken and and what is it called? Also is there a special thing do you need to get this effect, because it looks freaking psychedelic.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Looks like "dragging the shutter" where u have a slow shutter speed to blur motion and then freeze the subject with a flash

That's what it looks like. Rear sync camera flash at a low intensity, rotating the camera, probably about a 1 to 2 second exposure. Pretty awesome they timed it to end the rotation where the photo is upright.

I can't see the picture but apparently everyone else can. Sounds interesting. Is there a link? Being in China sucks sometimes, internet wise...

Opening it in a new page I could see it was from Facebook.

I reuploaded it to Imgur

Thanks for reuploading. Even with the VPN all I had was a blank space. Quoting him didn't reveal a link or anything. Weird stuff. Picture looks cool though haha, don't know what I was expecting but it's interesting.

More photos before I hit the road this morning. You probably won't believe it but people are still living in some of these houses, which is why they are still standing. They are called nail houses, look em up if you are interested.

I altered my commute heavily so I really don't take my camera out as randomly as I used to now. If I have the editing stamina I'll upload some stuff from today.

Shooting in a room with like one light bulb on in back of the person you're shooting is FUCKING INFURIATING!!!! Really couldn't even focus anything, AF just kept on hunting.

That's what MF is for.

So anyway, since the question is likely to come up soon, I need to start thinking about what I would charge for cosplay photography. Any ideas on where to start on that?

I tried to manual focus in the end, couldn't get much to work either since she was moving around and my shutter speed was 1/50th, still ended up being blur city.
