i think you mistake the word evolution with revolution, I don't understand what Pokemon has to do with anything or why you use that as an argument, and yes culture does evolve whether you like it or not, customs, arts, social institutions, all those things.
you didn't answer what's the raw sense of the word
You never played the Pokemon games? I was clearly referencing "evolution" as if we're talking monsters leveling up (i.e America, America 2.0, Mega America 3).
No, the culture didn't evolve. How the country is governed, what languages are primarily spoken, what type of educational systems exist, have generally stayed the same.

Now maybe in 200 years from now, especially with a lot ongoing struggles and shifts going on, the culture will change. But then it wont be America anymore in the contemporary sense.

you didn't answer what's the raw sense of the word
You can't achieve multiculturalism in perfect equilibrium. It only exists when there is set of agreements to prevent one from overtaking the other.
The government of Lebanon might be the only true story of multiculturalism. By law, Christianity and Islam are meant to have representation and doesn't reward total power to any group.

Otherwise, just by sheer birth rate or level of immigration, we go from different cultures to one group owning majority status in lets assume, a democratic republic.

And what does this have to do with anything?
People who moved onto Native territory did not actually inherit or become Native Americans. Once again, they are regarded as their own distinct tribe and their culture was not actually made American.

Edit: There's only one exception. Mexico was born when Spain invaded the region, killed off the Native men, and the Conquistadors stayed behind and mated with all the Native women. But in essence, they created an entirely new ethnic group while leaving behind some traces of pre-colombian history.

Japan didn't turn into America,
Are you sure about that? They did occupy them for like 7 years. Clearly that was enough time to reverse the entire thousand year history that those people had laid down and practiced for centuries.
But no, cultures don't work like that. America could technically occupy them today, I still would not expect mainland Japan and mainland USA to engage in the same activities unless you had Trump literally passing laws forcing Japanese people to stop studying in school or ban them from taking their shoes off when they go inside buildings.

Tiny, less freedom. Isolation, crime mostly goes unreported or isn't punished properly.
So if I go to Tokyo at night and stood out on the streets, I should hear gunshots and property break-ins? Japan has technology to hide all violent crime that no one with a cellphone would be able to catch it at any point of time?

Linking to one isolated murder case is not proof that Japan in general is more dangerous than the U.S.

It is a tiny island away from others with a long history of xenophobia. Japan survived only because of Western intervention, (trade because nothing was growing on said island for the longest time) they only remembered that after getting nuked after attacking other asian countries and the US.
So if Japanese people speak their own language, it's only because they are afraid of other nations? Or they make Sushi because they're scared of Western stuff?
Come on man....

This is an interesting thread for me -- my wife is English, and currently we're in the US (it was easier as I have a full time job / decent salary, and she was a freelance hairdresser) -- but lately we've been talking about moving to the UK in a few years (once she can get her US citizenship, just to be on the safe side)

I've visited England/Scotland probably a dozen times, and love it. But it's good to get some opinions of reasonably like minded people who actually live there full time.

Anyone know what the job market like is in Northern England (Closer to Manchester), specifically for IT?

(Sorry to hijack your thread, just seemed like the perfect opportunity)

No, killing a gaijin is bad news for business. Crime exists, but ofc comparing a small nation with several restrictions to the U.S is moronic.

Read the entire post, to say Japan hasn't been westernized makes zero sense. Their government, free market system are all western based. I think you may be confusing other people's post about Japan as an Asian country that is westernized and denying it because they speak Japanese and eat sushi.

Says who? Wouldn't this require Japanese culture to frown upon this stuff? The same culture that despite being occupied and bombed by America, managed to stay put?

Japan has a population of 126 million people, with Tokyo being directly comparable to NYC in size.
It's silly to blame this on size. NOBODY who lives in Japan has a camera can't go outside and film the non stop murders, rapes, arson, vandalism, property break ins without being forced to disappear?

That cannot be true.

Who in their right mind will call Japanese culture, American culture? Why would the two terms even exist if they don't each represent drastic differences from one another?

Japan having certain Westernized elements doesn't remove there is still an original culture that predates Western involvement.

In normal times, probably pretty good. May want to see how things settle down through covid and brexit but I can't imagine techies are not going to be required.

Oh yeah for sure, it'd be at least two years before we'd seriously consider it. I work for a company with an office near Manchester, so they'd likely let me transfer, but I was curious about other opportunities in that area. You know hot it goes, who knows how this job will work out 5/10 years down the road. Don't wanna be in an area that's super shitty if I ever need to look for work.

JordanN JordanN , Who called it American or culture besides you? Like I said I think you mixed up people telling you Japan was westernized after the war (which is wrong it happened around the meiji era) to their entire culture changing. You are also comparing a country with two countries as direct neighbors and 3x the population to a crowded island that values their nation over individualism. You want freedom or security?

For techie stuff basically your best options are London and Bristol.

The country adopted Western ideas but no, I don't treat this as evidence that Japanese culture actually evolved or changed drastically.
To understand my point, I would actually need to see how Japanese and Western societies have more in common with each other as opposed to also being different on key issues.

I am more willing to accept that Japan is more similar to its Asian neighbors, rather than the radical concept that Japan is more similar to the West, even after being occupied. This once again, comes from how different values are native to their actual environments.

SLoWMoTIoN said:

I know America has border issues but in no way are Canada and Mexico are directly responsible for the majority of the violence in the U.S mainland. Unless you have proof it's Canadians who are doing drive by shootings in New York City, it's rather moot to bring up who America's neighbors are in relation to its own internal affairs.

In regards to freedom and security, do you believe Japan has no free will? Their every single action is controlled by the government?

Choice of freedom or government aren't what make nations safe, or are you going to tell me Venezuela and Somalia are more safer than America since one is ruled by Socialism and the other has no functioning government at all?

The U.S constitution was written in English. I'm unaware of any supreme court judge who ever used the argument the original documents can't be understood by modern Americans.
Quite the opposite. The 1st and 2nd amendments are still interpreted the same as how the founding fathers would have used them. America didn't ban guns or free speech because they read it wrong.

But where I'm really going with this: if you want to see language change, why do we still have english, french, spanish, italian, portugese etc? Why not just one mono-language?
You would have to go back thousands of years ago when perhaps Latin might have fit that bill, but also for the same reason, culture changed too much that it's not spoken by many societies not named the Vatican City.

Chankoras said:

I would argue America was pretty damn powerful to begin with. Their first war was against that Empire you just listed and of course, they won and got their independence.
From 1776 to before the Second World War, the country was relatively on pace to never really lose in a major conflict. They did beat Mexico or Spain and even Ottoman Empire.
WW2 just made their position much more dominant since this was also a time of decolonization and England volunteered to give up their remaining power (the wind of change speech comes to mind) even though there wasn't actually anything stopping them from holding onto it.

Like Canada was still British territory up until 1982 and they only gave up Hong Kong in 1997 just to not piss off China.

Well apparently Truman didn't want to change culture, just the ability to go to war, so whether America could or couldn't is just speculation.

America can't even force its own population to be the same, even though they no longer have any laws that are meant to enforce race based discrimination.

Trying to force Japan to be an American clone would have failed or probably resulted in a lot of social unrest since that's always the story of when an occupier goes to a foreign land and forces the natives to behave or act a certain way.

Chankoras said:

It is still the same people who founded the nation that are still there. It is wrong to say they are not the same as their ancestors. You wouldn't get Japanese culture if only America occupied it.

Wife's not a big fan of going towards London, unfortunately (her family is all in the Lakes district).

I don't blame her. London is too busy for my tastes. Bristol has a thriving tech scene but the town is absolutely far left (you'll find XR protests and the likes regularly). Food is excellent, and of course there's Banksy, and if your wife is interested there's a lot of really nice countryside not too far away and some lovely places to visit like the Bath, the Cotswolds, Paignton, Torquay, etc all within driveable distance, plus decent transport links to London if you need to be there for business.

Ok I have. Why should I still believe Japan has more in common with the U.S and not the fact they're actually still an Asian country?
In a hilarious but relevant example, Japan censors their porn whereas the U.S clearly doesn't. In terms of media and entertainment, Japan clearly designs their own products based around Japanese tests as opposed to just copying U.S movies, games or music.

All this stuff goes beyond mere Western influence. If we were to hold a vote today that said "Japan, just give up your culture and become 100% like America" how many Japanese would actually vote for something like that? How can these differences not be traced back to a culture that wants to be different from Western society?

I think my head hurts.
Blaming foreign countries for America's own internal safety is pretty bizarre. Or even the idea that it plays a significant factor.
Like I understand there are illegals who cross the border and commit crime but do you have proof U.S prisons are actually full of Canadians? Come on man....

Freest Countries 2020
Sure, not as much as us though.
So which metric is it that determines safety?
Because Venezuela, Brazil, South Africa, Iraq have less freedom but are still more dangerous places than Japan.

If you think you can just outlaw crime, I don't know, I think that's just fairy tale logic. Just like how having no government at all doesn't make things safe.

We have the Capitol Hill Zone as proof. When the cops are gone, the result was an instant shit hole.

Me: So where's the proof of Japan hiding crime footage and American prisons being full of foreigners?

You cite Japan's safety for being less free. I'm saying that's a flawed metric because some of the most dangerous countries also have no freedom at all.

So you agree that level of Japanese freedom is irrelevant for explaining crime differences?

Japan as a nation did change plenty in 200 years though. They completely changed their government to one that is literally ours. On top of adapting to our laws and some of our customs well you know, you did say you are updated on their history.

Japan has strict gun, drug laws that CAN be enforced. On top of being shy people that work themselves to...er right. It also doesn't have the eyes of the world on it on top of it, or not having a moronic "war on drugs" (while stats say otherwise) , while we get said drugs from both neighboring countries and breed criminals in the process or turf wars. They also don't have a industrial prison complex that gains capital from said criminals. All those things contribute greatly to all the crime that happens here. They are also not the only problems we face lol. I know you are Canadian and everything but how could you not know all this? To compare a nation that is this different to Japan and ask why Japan doesn't have our problems is just silly. I mean how come we can reproduce and most of our population aren't old people? Come on Japan get your shit together! :)

They still retain their Emperor. I will research on just how much power they still have but even as recent as last year, they're still considered impactful since they name a new Era after them.

In terms of laws and customs, you need to elaborate. Like in your next post, you mentioned that they are even tougher on drugs and I'm aware that the penalties are actually considered much harsher. Like if a famous Japanese voice actor was caught doing drugs, they are practically shunned from society. In the West, people joke about drugs all the time.

Again, I do not deny any Western influences. But I can still keep making arguments that Japanese culture differs as much with the West, for all the same reasons they are suppose to be similar.

I don't know what other conclusion can be made from this? Do foreigners go to Japan and expect to follow U.S customs there? Even when the same country makes it incredibly difficult for outsiders to even move to the country in the first place?

Here's a problem I have with your post.

What gives you the idea that Japan not having a "prison complex" or that the "eyes of the world" are valid excuses to explain Japan's safety? Maybe you thought my comparison was only about America? Does it make you feel better if I think Japan is also safer than Canada or several European countries?

You should be aware all my arguments already took your variables into consideration. Even more so when you say people just aren't paying attention to Japan.

Are you aware that Japan still has a great deal of tourism? Shouldn't the American or Canadian governments issue warnings that tell tourists "OH NO! DON'T GO TO JAPAN! THEY'RE LIARS. PEOPLE ARE BEING BUTCHERED IN THE STREETS! YOU WILL BE EXECUTED IF YOU REPORT ANY CRIME YOU SEE ON YOUR VACATION!" Why isn't this case?

It can't be bias since travel warnings exist for other countries. Yet why don't we have personal first hand counts telling us Tokyo is actually a warzone and you will be killed for staying out late at night? How does Japan succeed year after year in suppressing this information when they are visited by millions of people around the globe all the time?

I just want you to think about these things. I'm not being mean or a jerk, I just want to hear from you how do you explain these things or broaden your horizons that Japan's safety may have nothing at all to do with it being an "island nation"? There are plenty of other island nations too, but they still very terrible violent crime....

Like Jamaica or maybe Madagascar?

Japan is one of the most closed, insular societies in the world and even then the American/Western influence on culture is impossible to ignore. Their favourite sport is baseball FFS.

Yeah, something that dates back before they actually opened their borders to the West and to this day, they still aren't carbon copies of U.S society despite constantly being told "See, they play baseball. Now their culture is American XD. But lets also ignore that other things about Japanese society is totally different. Like the lack of crime in major cities. Not even the USA with trillions of dollars and the largest military on earth can fix this on their own soil."

I'm going to be the honest, the attempts at gotchas in this thread are at some Resetera levels of dumbness. It's like there's an attempt at trying to feel intellectual while doubling down on also being morally righteous. The worst combination on earth.

My motto is less patronizing, more facts. You will never win an argument on feelings alone.

As a Yank staying just outside Perth at the moment I can give you some tips which might help.

The main thing to consider is how you'll support yourself. There's no point coming here if you don't have a fat bank account or a decent trade. If you did decide to come I would strongly advise you to find a place to stay beforehand. The first time I came here I couldn't afford anywhere and ended up sleeping in a park until I got a place in a youth hostel. Unemployment is high and competition for jobs is fierce. Forget any dumb fantasies about drawing or walking into Rockstar. The only work that will be initially available to you will be low paid manual work, if your lucky.

If you want to live up North then Inverness is your best bet. It's real nice and it's large enough that getting factory/farm work shouldn't be too difficult. Forget about living in rural areas like The Shetlands. Those places are poor as fuck. All the communities are real small. There's no housing and any jobs that are available go to the locals. They're not going to give shit to any outsider.

If you really want a taste of Scotland go tour round West Virginia. It would be cheaper and less risky than coming all the way over here.

Unemployment is higher in Canada.
We also have a ton of international students and temporary foreign workers who already take jobs away from Canadians. In fact, it's not unusual to see the same job sites mention they are only looking for "international" workers first (because it's easier for employers to pay the lowest wages and avoid other customs....)

Although I'll be honest. I find this whole immigration scenario to be a bit hilarious/ironic. I've been told non-stop by the media that Western countries always need "newcomers" and there just isn't enough locals working. Yet if I go to the UK, I'll be lucky to even get a job picking Corn?

Something doesn't add up. Or it implies going to the UK is going to instantly get me killed, even though I've spent the last 10+ years looking for a job in my city and I only get like 1 or 2 responses a year.

I'll be sure to load up my bank account first, but why would I go to the UK just to do slave work? I have pride in myself and would rather get a UK company to sponsor me for a more educated profession.

Living in the UK, you must realise we hate each other but it's also love. English hate Welsh and us both and Scottish hate the English lol.

That's completely naturally.

I should point out that a lot of British people are already here. Yet I never heard of stories of English & Scottish Canadians getting into constant drive by shootings.
They can get along anywhere on this earth, while still telling jokes about each other.

Meanwhile, there's a bigger gap or level of animosity between English & French Canadians. Like, they have an entire province for themselves just to get away from us.

Scotland is amazing, well depends if you like bagpipes and are happy to learn to understand as different parts of Scotland have different accent. Glasgow can be bit hard to understand but Scotland is a lovely place. Uk it’s alright, It depends where ya go.

Before I had no interest in bag pipes, but after Bill Barr's performance it's a chad instrument.

Your not going to get a UK company to sponsor you. Your not going to get into an "educated profession." If you go to Scotland and you don't have a trade then the work that will be available to you, if your lucky, will be factory/farm/care home work.

Then I'm going to directly challenge that and report back my findings.
Because it's already the same situation here. I've worked next to people who were both serving coffee for a living while also going to school to get a job in mechanical engineering or hell, a few years ago one guy was lucky and became a matte painter for a Vancouver VFX House.

But moving to the UK or Canada just to pick fruit for all eternity sounds crazy. Or just because some people do it doesn't mean I want to and I'll tell Neogaf my story when I'm there.

At least you will have three stab wounds there since they use Pitchforks like Ye Olde Yorkshire Fulk do.

Sheep get stabbed in Wales everyday...in their rear ends.

Charles Brandon Charles Brandon What is your Avi btw? I don't recognise him but curious to know!

It's hard man, warrior, top shagger and best mate of Henry VIII - the 1st Duke of Suffolk.

Yes. I've told you that several times now but it didn't appear to be getting through. Moving from Canada to here without money, a trade and an excellent employment record is crazy. You will not be able to support yourself. You will not get any help from the Government. You will have no option but to return home unless you are willing to work low paid, menial jobs.

I'm frankly amazed that you don't understand stuff as basic as this. It tells me you should really just stay with your parents. You will only end up in the worst kind of trouble and no doubt they will have to pay a lot of money to get you out of it.

Don’t be too put off by the accents of Scottish women - they’re probably all lovely people.

This was never within the realm of what I considered possible ideas.

The entire process of moving to the UK could take anywhere from 2 to 15 years, but I never said what I was going to do during that time. Or if I wouldn't still have a job in Canada.

Only that by the year 2035, I wont be in the country anymore and have relocated all my assets to the UK. In which case, I'm not expecting to have a manual labor job. If it was up to me, I would even look towards starting a business and hiring native Britains. That's what moving to another country looks like to me.

I'm just trying to get away from something I hate, while hoping to move somewhere else and empower the locals without having to endure the same fate I originally had.
